Archetype Overview
Fai is a Draconic Ninja chain-link aggro deck. It plays almost nothing but cheap red attacks with go again, and its card text rewards you for every Draconic link already on the combat chain. The first two attacks of a turn are the setup. By the third and fourth link, the attacks are cheaper, hit harder, and keep their go again. This build took Top 4 at Calling: Kyoto 2026 in the hands of Samuel Cho.
The Plan: Make Each Link Feed the Next
A large part of the list keys off how many Draconic chain links you control, so each attack you resolve improves the next one:
- Two links gives go again to Display Loyalty, Cinderskin Devotion and Searing Emberblade. It also gives Phoenix Flame +1 power and turns on the first tier of Enflame the Firebrand.
- Three links makes Fai's own Phoenix Flame recursion free. It also makes Dragonscaler Flight Path free and drops Compounding Anger to zero cost. Enflame the Firebrand then makes every attack Draconic for the rest of the chain.
- Four links turns on Rupture on Lava Burst for +3 power, gives Enflame the Firebrand +2 power, and lets Rising Resentment cheat out a bigger attack from hand.
Spreading Flames adds a final layer. Once the chain is long, your low-power Draconic attacks get +1 power while their base power is below your link count.
The Engine: Phoenix Flame Never Runs Out
Phoenix Flame is a zero-cost Draconic attack with go again, so it counts as a link for every payoff above. Fai lets you start the game with one in your graveyard. Her once-per-turn instant returns it to hand for 3 resources minus one per Draconic link, which is free at three links.
The rest of the list keeps that loop running:
- Tutors: Flamecall Awakening and Phoenix Bannerman: Head search for a Flame.
- Recursion: Inflame and both colors of Rise from the Ashes return one from the graveyard.
- Card flow: Art of the Phoenix: War and Fire that Burns Within discard a Flame as a cost. You draw cards, add power, and stock the graveyard for Fai to rebuy later.
The result is a hero that rebuys a free go-again link every turn and turns her spare Flames into cards.
Why the Plan Is Strong
The opponent has no good blocking choice. If they let the early links through, the late links arrive bigger and often unpreventable. Tiger Stripe Shuko gives the second low-power attack action each turn +1 power and makes its damage unpreventable. If they block early, they spend cards on 2- and 3-power attacks while you still have the Flame loop, the sword and the Flight Path left to extend the chain.
The deck does not stall on resources. Almost every attack costs 0 or 1, so red pitch goes further than it looks. Red pitch also powers Flamescale Furnace, which gains a resource for each red card in your pitch zone once you have played a red card that turn. Fyendal's Spring Tunic and Vest of the First Fist add more resources, the Vest paying out when an attack action hits. Mask of the Pouncing Lynx does a different job: when an attack action hits, it finds a low-power attack from your deck that you can play that turn.
The few non-Draconic cards still join the chain. Brand with Cinderclaw makes your next attack Draconic. That lets Dragon Power collect its +3 power and keeps Salt the Wound, Tenacity and Rowdy Locals counting toward your thresholds. The blue slots also give you disruption. Warmonger's Diplomacy restricts what the opponent can play on their next turn. Authority of Ataya taxes their defense reactions on the turn you pitch it. That matters for a deck that wants its late links to connect.
You can still defend. Shelter from the Storm and Sink Below are red defense reactions, so they pitch into your attack turns when you don't need them. Blazen Yoroi gets +4 defense when it blocks on chain link 4 or higher, which punishes opponents who try to race you with long chains of their own.
The Real Constraints
- Red pitch is thin. Every red card you pitch gives one resource, so cards that cost resources compete hard for your hand. Any turn where you can't reach two Draconic links plays well below the deck's ceiling.
- Some cards restrict you. Oath of Loyalty is a strong opener. It must be the first action of your turn, though, and it locks you into Draconic cards until end of turn. That shuts off Warmonger's Diplomacy, Salt the Wound, Tenacity and Rowdy Locals for the turn.
- Breaking the chain stops the scaling. Any disruption that ends your chain or shuts off go again stops the deck from building up on that turn.
Who Should Pick It Up
Play Fai if you like proactive aggro and are comfortable counting every turn. You will be tracking link counts, pitch-zone colors and Phoenix Flame locations before you commit a card. Fai's intellect of 4 means each turn is a small puzzle. Good sequencing pays off far more than raw card quality, so the deck rewards practice and punishes autopilot. If you prefer slow, reactive games, this is the wrong hero.
Before you invest the roughly $1035 this list costs, check Fai's current legality. As of 2026-10-19, the official Card Legality Policy lists Fai, Rising Rebellion as a Living Legend, though that page does not say when she reached it (source: fabtcg.com Card Legality Policy, accessed 2026-10-19). Under the official Living Legend rules, a hero leaves official play from the Friday after reaching that status (source: fabtcg.com Living Legend page, accessed 2026-10-19). Confirm Fai is still legal for your target event before you buy in.
Core Strategy & Game Plan
This list is a Draconic go-again aggro deck. It wins by building long combat chains out of 0-cost red attacks, then cashing in the chain length through cards that scale with it. Every Draconic link you add makes the next piece cheaper, bigger, or able to keep going. Your job each turn is to reach the third and fourth link with resources and cards still in hand. That's where the deck's best effects switch on.
How the Deck Wins
You win through repeated turns of four-plus chain links that the opponent can't fully block. Damage comes from volume, not one big swing. Most of your attacks show 2-4 power, and the threshold cards make the late links hit far above their printed numbers:
- 2+ Draconic links: Display Loyalty, Cinderskin Devotion and Searing Emberblade gain go again, and Phoenix Flame gets +1 power.
- 3+ links: Enflame the Firebrand makes your attacks Draconic for the rest of the chain.
- Link 4 or higher: Lava Burst gets +3 power, and Enflame the Firebrand gets +2 power.
Compounding Anger gets cheaper with each Draconic link. Spreading Flames gives +1 power to any Draconic attack whose base power is below your link count. Rising Resentment gets better the longer the chain runs: on a hit, it lets you banish and play a more expensive attack from hand.
Posture: Proactive, With Cheap Insurance
You are the beatdown in almost every game. On your own turn, pitch your blues and spend your reds. On the opponent's turn, block only enough to keep a working hand for your next turn. The red Shelter from the Storm and Sink Below count as both defense and spare resources, since they pitch for 1 when you don't need them. Sink Below also lets you bottom a dead card and draw. Blazen Yoroi gets +4 defense when it blocks on chain link 4 or higher. That makes it your best answer to opponents who copy your plan and attack many times in a turn. Defend early links with cards and save the Yoroi for the deep ones.
The Engine: Phoenix Flame Recursion
Fai, Rising Rebellion lets you start with Phoenix Flame in your graveyard. Once per turn, Fai returns it to your hand for 3 resources, minus the number of Draconic chain links you control. You can activate it on the opponent's turn, but it costs full price there. Fire it mid-chain on your own turn, ideally at three links when it costs nothing. The Flame is a free go-again link, so every return extends your chain by one at no card cost.
The rest of the deck feeds or spends that Flame:
- Finders: Flamecall Awakening searches for a Flame if you've played another red card this turn. Phoenix Bannerman: Head searches for one unconditionally.
- Recursion: both colors of Rise from the Ashes return a Flame and buff your next attack action. Inflame also returns one, after another red card.
- Payoffs: Fire that Burns Within discards a Flame to draw a card and gain +2 power. Art of the Phoenix: War discards a Flame to draw two and pump every Draconic attack action that turn.
Treat a Flame in the graveyard as a resource. Discarding one to Art of the Phoenix: War is fine, because Fai brings it back next turn.
Equipment as Turn Amplifiers
Your Draconic weapon and equipment get cheaper as the chain grows, the same way Fai's ability does:
- Searing Emberblade has go again at two Draconic links, so it works as a mid-chain link rather than a finisher.
- Ignite discounts the next Draconic card you play or activate, which includes the Emberblade and Dragonscaler Flight Path.
- Dragonscaler Flight Path lets the Emberblade attack an extra time.
- Flamescale Furnace turns a pitch zone full of reds into extra resources once you've played a red card.
- Tiger Stripe Shuko rewards your second low-power attack action each turn with +1 power and unpreventable damage. Most of the deck qualifies.
Vest of the First Fist, Mask of the Pouncing Lynx and Dragonscaler Flight Path are one-shots. Spend them on the turn that wins the game or breaks open a close race, not on turn two.
Colorless Cards Need a Draconic Setup
Brand with Cinderclaw makes your next attack Draconic. Enflame the Firebrand makes your attacks Draconic from three links onward. Those two let Dragon Power gain its +3 and let Salt the Wound, Tenacity and Rowdy Locals count toward your Draconic totals.
Watch out for Oath of Loyalty. It must be your first action, and it limits you to Draconic cards for the rest of the turn. That shuts off Dragon Power, Salt the Wound, Tenacity, Rowdy Locals and Warmonger's Diplomacy. Lead with it only when your hand is all Draconic.
The Ideal Game
- Early turns: Pitch a blue and chain cheap go-again reds. A clean turn looks like Ronin Renegade into Ignite, then a discounted Searing Emberblade with go again. Then use Fai, now free at three links, to return the starting Phoenix Flame and play it as link four. Close with Lava Burst at full rupture. Fyendal's Spring Tunic quietly charges in the background.
- Midgame: Keep a late-chain card such as Lava Burst or Compounding Anger in arsenal so next turn's chain has a guaranteed closer. Block with spare reds and Yoroi, and protect your Flame access. A turn without a Flame is a turn one link shorter.
- Closing turn: Spend everything: Tunic energy, Vest, Mask, Dragonscaler Flight Path, Art of the Phoenix: War. Pitch Authority of Ataya that turn so the opponent's defense reactions cost more when they matter most.
If you're short on Flame access or blues, cut the chain to three strong links and keep blockers. A short chain you can repeat next turn beats one long chain that leaves you empty.
Card Choices & Breakdown
The Engine: Fai and Phoenix Flame
Fai, Rising Rebellion starts the game with a Phoenix Flame already in the graveyard and can return it for one resource less per Draconic chain link you control. At three Draconic links the return is free, once per turn. Every slot in this list either builds those links or turns them into damage. Phoenix Flame costs 0, has go again, and gains +1 power at two or more Draconic links. It is a free link you can recover again and again.
Three copies of Phoenix Flame is the cap, so the list adds ways to find and recover them:
- Flamecall Awakening (3): a 3-power go again attack that tutors a Flame from your deck if you've played another red card this turn. In a deck this red, that condition is almost always met.
- Phoenix Bannerman: Head (1): a tutor plus a Ponder token. It is Legendary, so one is the legal maximum.
- Rise from the Ashes (3 red, 3 blue): returns a Flame from the graveyard and pumps your next Draconic or Ninja attack action card. The red gives +3 power, the blue gives +1. This is the only card where you run all six copies across two colors, because it is both recursion and a damage multiplier.
- Inflame (1): also returns a Flame, but only has 1 power. It is a single copy because Rise from the Ashes does the same job better.
Two cards spend Flames instead. Fire that Burns Within discards one to draw a card and gain +2 power. Art of the Phoenix: War is an instant that discards one to draw two and give your Draconic attack action cards +1 power for the turn. Both refill your hand, and Fai can bring the discarded Flame back.
Chain Builders
Most of the red attacks cost 0 and have go again, either always or once you control two Draconic links:
- Brand with Cinderclaw (3): go again, and it makes your next attack this chain Draconic. That turns on Dragon Power and Searing Emberblade, and it lets non-Draconic attacks count toward your link total. The card was unbanned in Classic Constructed on 2026-09-18 (source: fabtcg.com Scheduled Banned and Restricted Announcement, 2026-09-17).
- Ronin Renegade (3): an unconditional 3-power go again attack.
- Ignite (3): makes your next Draconic card played or activated cheaper. That includes a Searing Emberblade swing or a Dragonscaler Flight Path activation.
- Display Loyalty and Cinderskin Devotion: both gain go again at two or more links. Display Loyalty also makes a Fealty token when it attacks a hero. Cinderskin Devotion is a blue that still attacks, which is why it is worth two slots.
- Enflame the Firebrand (3): gets stronger as the chain grows. At two links it gains go again. At three, all your attacks become Draconic. At four, it gets +2 power.
- Blaze Headlong and Oath of Loyalty (3 each): 4-power openers. Oath of Loyalty must be the first action of your turn, and after it you can only play Draconic cards that turn. Check your hand before you lead with it, because the generic and Ninja-only cards are locked out.
- Rising Resentment (3): when it hits, it banishes an attack action card from your hand with cost less than your Draconic link count, makes it cheaper, and lets you play it that turn. This deepens the chain without using new resources.
Payoffs
- Lava Burst (3): has Rupture, so it gets +3 power as chain link 4 or later. Its 3 defense means it doubles as a blocker when the turn doesn't line up.
- Spreading Flames (3): gives your Draconic attacks +1 power while their base power is below your link count. That hits Phoenix Flame, Ignite, Lava Burst and most of the deck on a long chain.
- Compounding Anger (2): 5 power for 3 resources, minus one per Draconic link. It is free at link 4, but a dead draw early in the turn, which is why it is held to two copies.
- Salt the Wound and Tenacity (1 each): yellow finishers. Salt the Wound scales with hits this chain, and Tenacity scales with defending cards. They give you a middle pitch value and punish either choice your opponent makes, so they are one-ofs rather than playsets.
- Dragon Power (2): a blue 5-power swing once something makes it Draconic.
Blues and Pitch Utility
The attacks are almost all 0-cost, so the list runs few blues and gives each one a second job:
- Rowdy Locals (3): gets +2 power if your opponent blocks it with an action card, and strips a card from their hand when it hits.
- Warmonger's Diplomacy (3): forces each hero to choose war or peace, which restricts the actions they can take on their next turn.
- Authority of Ataya (1): a Legendary resource with no other use. When you pitch it, your opponent's defense reactions cost an extra resource that turn, so pitch it on your big turn.
Flamescale Furnace adds resources for each red card in your pitch zone, which is how red-heavy hands pay for Searing Emberblade and Fai, Rising Rebellion activations.
Defense
Shelter from the Storm and Sink Below (3 each) are red defense reactions that block for 4. Shelter from the Storm can also be discarded as an instant to prevent damage across several hits. Sink Below lets you put a card from your hand on the bottom of your deck and draw a replacement. Because both are red, they still pitch for 1 and help turn on Flamescale Furnace.
Weapon and Equipment
Searing Emberblade is a 2-resource, 3-power swing that gains go again at two Draconic links. Dragonscaler Flight Path can let it attack an additional time, and the activation gets cheaper as the chain grows.
- Mask of the Pouncing Lynx: on a hit, it searches for an attack action card with 2 or less power. In this deck that usually means a Phoenix Flame, Lava Burst or Enflame the Firebrand.
- Tiger Stripe Shuko: gives your second low-power attack each turn +1 power, and its damage can't be prevented.
- Chest slot: the list carries four chest pieces, so you choose one per game.
- Vest of the First Fist and Fyendal's Spring Tunic give extra resources.
- Flamescale Furnace gives extra resources on red-heavy turns.
- Blazen Yoroi gets +4 defense against long chains.
- Legs slot: Boots of Omnis Ward is the anti-arcane option. Dragonscaler Flight Path is the aggressive one.
The Decklist
This is the 80-card pool that placed Top 4 at Calling: Kyoto 2026 in the hands of Samuel Cho: 9 weapon and equipment pieces plus 71 deck cards. That fills the 80-card Classic Constructed card-pool limit exactly. Each game the deck starts at a minimum of 60 cards chosen from the pool (source: fabtcg.com Classic Constructed format page, accessed 2026-10-19). Estimated cost is about $1035 at TCGplayer market prices.
The pitch split is 55 red, 2 yellow and 14 blue. That is an aggressively red build, so the blues are your only real pitch-3 resources. Expect most turns to run on red pitch, Flamescale Furnace and Fyendal's Spring Tunic. Before you register, check the official Card Legality Policy. On 2026-10-19 it lists Fai, Rising Rebellion as a Living Legend, and the Deck Dive of 2026-10-13 said Fai had not yet reached that status (source: fabtcg.com Card Legality Policy and Deck Dive – Pro Quest: London Week 3, 2026-10-13 to 2026-10-19).

Hand Planning & Pitching
Fai, Rising Rebellion has intellect 4, and nearly every red in the list costs 0. Resources are rarely what limits a turn. What limits it is how long a chain you can build and how many Draconic chain links it reaches. Plan each hand around one question: how deep can this chain go, and what is the least you have to pitch to get there?
Count Your Blues First
Before you plan anything, sort the hand by what it needs to spend:
- Four 0-cost reds: pitch nothing and play all four. A hand like Ignite, Brand with Cinderclaw, Display Loyalty and Ronin Renegade needs no resources. Lead with the cards that have go again unconditionally. That way Display Loyalty or Enflame the Firebrand arrives once you already control two Draconic links.
- Three reds plus one blue: the blue is your pitch. Its 3 resources cover Searing Emberblade (2) plus one 1-cost card such as Spreading Flames, Fire that Burns Within or Flamecall Awakening. Alternatively, they cover a partial Fai activation.
- Two or more blues: pitch one and keep the other to block or arsenal. Rowdy Locals, Dragon Power and Cinderskin Devotion each defend for 3. That is better than most of your reds.
Pitch Priority
- Warmonger's Diplomacy and Authority of Ataya. Neither adds to a Draconic chain. Warmonger's Diplomacy has no go again, so playing it uses your action. Authority of Ataya does something only when pitched. It taxes opposing defense reactions that turn, so pitch it on the turn you swing hardest.
- Off-color blues you can't fit into the chain. Rowdy Locals and Dragon Power aren't Draconic unless Brand with Cinderclaw or Enflame the Firebrand makes them so. Without that support, they are pitch or blockers.
- Surplus reds. Pitch a second Oath of Loyalty, since only one can be your first action. Pitch Lava Burst when the hand can't reach chain link 4.
Spend less than you think you need. Fai's ability and Dragonscaler Flight Path both cost 1 less for each Draconic chain link you control. At three links, both are free. Ignite likewise discounts the next Draconic card. A deep chain pays for itself, so don't pitch a card early for an activation the chain will cover.
Never Pitch Phoenix Flame
A pitched Phoenix Flame leaves your graveyard engine. A discarded one feeds it. Art of the Phoenix: War and Fire that Burns Within both turn a Flame in hand into cards drawn. They also put it in the graveyard, where Fai, Rise from the Ashes and Inflame can return it. Treat Flame as a free go-again link or as discard fuel, not as 1 resource. Fai lets you start the game with a Flame in your graveyard. Take that option, so your recursion works from your first turn.
Your Chest Slot Changes the Math
Your four chest pieces change how you value a red pitch:
- Flamescale Furnace: once you've played a red card, it gives 1 resource for each red in your pitch zone. Pitching two reds then plays like pitching a blue.
- Fyendal's Spring Tunic: converts three banked energy counters into 1 resource, an occasional extra.
- Vest of the First Fist: refunds 2 resources when an attack action card hits. This lets you pitch light and still afford Searing Emberblade late in the chain.
- Blazen Yoroi: adds nothing to resources. Pick it when you expect to defend deep chains.
Blocking and the Arsenal
When you defend, block with whatever is worst on your next turn. That means extra blues, a redundant Oath of Loyalty, or a Lava Burst with no path to link 4. Keep the reds that extend chains. Shelter from the Storm and Sink Below defend for 4, so save them for big hits. Sink Below also swaps a dead card in your hand for a fresh draw.
Put a card in the arsenal when it improves next turn more than blocking with it would:
- Oath of Loyalty: it must be your first action, so arsenaling it guarantees your next turn starts with go again and 4 power.
- Compounding Anger or Lava Burst: both get cheaper or stronger deep in a chain, so they are good cards to finish one.
- A defense reaction: arsenal one when you expect a large swing from the opponent.
Opening the Game
If you go first, your opponent hasn't attacked yet, so commit your whole hand to offense. The ideal opener starts with Oath of Loyalty. Oath stops you from playing non-Draconic cards that turn, but it doesn't stop you pitching them. Off-color blues can still pay for Searing Emberblade or a 1-cost red behind it.
Ignore Fyendal's Spring Tunic in your early planning. It gains only one counter at the start of each of your turns, so it can't pay you back for several turns.
If you go second, plan your defense first. Block with the blues and redundant reds, then build your return chain from what's left.
Sequencing & Key Lines
Count Draconic Chain Links
Your turn runs on one number: how many Draconic chain links you control. At 2, Display Loyalty, Cinderskin Devotion, Enflame the Firebrand and Searing Emberblade gain go again, and Phoenix Flame gets +1 power. At 3, Fai, Rising Rebellion's return and Dragonscaler Flight Path both cost nothing, Compounding Anger is free, and Enflame the Firebrand makes all your attacks Draconic. At 4, Lava Burst ruptures and Blazen Yoroi turns on when you defend. Non-attack actions like Rise from the Ashes and Phoenix Bannerman: Head add no chain link, so count only attacks.
What to Lead With
- Lead with a red card that has go again on its own: Ronin Renegade, Brand with Cinderclaw, Ignite or Rising Resentment. These are the cards that let Blaze Headlong, Flamecall Awakening and Inflame meet their "played another red card" condition.
- Never open with Blaze Headlong, Display Loyalty or Cinderskin Devotion. At link 1 none of them has go again, so the turn ends.
- Oath of Loyalty has to be your first action. If you play Rise from the Ashes or Phoenix Bannerman: Head first, you can no longer play Oath that turn. Once Oath resolves, you can only play Draconic cards. That rules out Rowdy Locals, Tenacity, Salt the Wound, Warmonger's Diplomacy and Dragon Power that turn, so plan Oath turns around a hand that is all Draconic.
The Middle of the Chain
Play Spreading Flames early. Every later Draconic attack with base power below your link count gets +1, which adds up with zero-power Phoenix Flame and the two-power attacks. Spend Ignite's discount on something that costs resources: Spreading Flames, Fire that Burns Within, Flamecall Awakening, Compounding Anger or a Searing Emberblade activation. If a free card is the next Draconic card you play, the discount is wasted.
Brand with Cinderclaw and Enflame the Firebrand at 3+ links are your bridges into Dragon Power, which gets +3 when it attacks as a Draconic attack. Dragon Power has no go again, so it is a closer, not a middle link.
The Phoenix Flame Loop
Fire that Burns Within and Art of the Phoenix: War both discard a Phoenix Flame straight into the graveyard. At 3+ links, Fai, Rising Rebellion gets it back for free, and you can play it again as another go-again link. Pitched cards go to the bottom of your deck, not the graveyard. Pitching a Flame therefore gives up a loop piece, so pitch other reds first. Art of the Phoenix: War is an instant, so cast it right before your heaviest run of Draconic attacks to get the most out of the +1 each.
Closers
- Lava Burst at link 4 or later.
- Compounding Anger at 3+ links.
- Salt the Wound after several hits.
- Tenacity after the opponent has put several defending cards on the chain.
- The biggest closer is Searing Emberblade at 3+ links followed by a free Dragonscaler Flight Path, which gives you a second sword attack.
Sample Line
Hand: Ronin Renegade, Brand with Cinderclaw, Rise from the Ashes (blu), Lava Burst. Phoenix Flame starts in your graveyard.
- Ronin Renegade (link 1, go again).
- Brand with Cinderclaw (link 2).
- Play Rise from the Ashes (blu) instead of pitching it. Return the Flame. This adds no link.
- Phoenix Flame (link 3) for 2 power: +1 from 2 links and +1 from Rise. It has go again.
- Lava Burst (link 4) ruptures for 5.
The whole hand costs nothing and builds a four-link chain.
Resource Edges
Activate Flamescale Furnace late, after you have played a red card and pitched as many reds as you can. It costs 1 and pays 1 per red card in your pitch zone, so every extra red you pitch first makes it pay more. Vest of the First Fist and Mask of the Pouncing Lynx trigger on hit. Only the Mask needs an action point left over, because it lets you play the banished card. Let the Mask trigger on a link that has go again; on your closer it does nothing. Late in a long chain, Mask fetching Lava Burst or Enflame the Firebrand is the strongest grab.
Branch Points
- Short hand, opponent at high life: build links and save Compounding Anger in arsenal for the turn you reach 3+.
- Blocking hand: keep Shelter from the Storm or Sink Below back. Defend long opposing chains with Blazen Yoroi, since it gains +4 defense at link 4 or later.
- Warmonger's Diplomacy: it has no go again, so it is always your last action. The opponent chooses war or peace before you do, so you choose knowing their pick.
Playing Around Defense Reactions and Prevention
Shelter from the Storm and Sink Below are among the most common tech cards in the published lists (source: fabtcg.com decklist API, 2026-09-20 to 2026-10-19). Expect defense reactions and damage prevention, and sequence against both:
- Pitch Authority of Ataya on the turn you go long. Opposing defense reactions cost an extra resource that turn, which is often the difference on your biggest swing.
- Route Tiger Stripe Shuko's bonus deliberately. Your second attack action with base power 2 or less becomes unpreventable, so make that second low-power attack Lava Burst or Dragon Power, not Phoenix Flame.
- When the opponent wants to block with action cards, Rowdy Locals gets +2. Every extra defender they commit also grows a Tenacity played later in the chain.
Matchup Matrix
Your plan rarely changes: build Draconic chain links, push go-again damage, and let the opponent decide how much life to trade. What changes from matchup to matchup is how much you block and how many cards you hold back. The heroes named below were the most-played legal heroes at Calling: Kyoto. Fang (32), Levia SA (29), Arakni M (29), Jarl (27) and Cindra (26) led the Round 1 pairings (source: Calling: Kyoto Round 1 pairings, 2026-10-17/18). Ser Boltyn won that event (source: Calling: Kyoto final standings, 2026-10-17/18).
| Opponent | Verdict | What decides it |
|---|---|---|
| Jarl Vetreiði | Favored | Whether your chain is longer than their blocks |
| Levia, Shadowborn Abomination | Unfavored | Absorbing their few big hits while you race |
| Fang | Even | Who takes the first big tempo turn |
| Cindra, Dracai of Retribution | Even | Blocking discipline in a pure race |
| Arakni, Marionette | Even | Holding up defense without stalling your clock |
| Ser Boltyn, Breaker of Dawn | Even | Taxing their defensive turns |
| Control / fatigue (strategy) | Favored | Volume of attacks over card quality |
| Draconic mirrors (strategy) | Even | Arsenal and Phoenix Flame tempo |
Jarl Vetreiði — Favored
Jarl's lists are built to block and grind. That plays into your hand. A defensive hand can only cover so many links, and you present more links than almost anyone. Lead with cheap go-again attacks so they spend blocks early. Save Tenacity and Rowdy Locals for the turns when they commit cards to defend: Tenacity gains power for every defending card on the chain, and Rowdy Locals gets +2 when an action card blocks it. Use Tiger Stripe Shuko to make your second small attack unpreventable. Don't let their slower pace tempt you into short turns. Every turn you go wide is a turn their blocks fall short.
Levia, Shadowborn Abomination — Unfavored
Levia lands fewer, larger hits, and most of your cards defend for only 2. That makes most of your blocks inefficient. Save Sink Below and Shelter from the Storm for their biggest attacks, and use Sink Below's card swap to bottom a blank card. Take the smaller hits rather than breaking up a strong red hand. Play Rowdy Locals whenever you can, because the discard trade costs them more than it costs you. Win the race, don't try to stall it. Fire the full chain every turn you can.
Fang — Even
This is a speed check between two aggressive Draconic decks. Make sure you're the one who takes the first huge turn. Don't block early unless it saves a card you need. When their chains run long, Blazen Yoroi blocks for 5 on chain link 4 or higher, and Boots of Omnis Ward can prevent 1 damage at the end of a close race. Keep Compounding Anger and Lava Burst for your own long chains. Those turns are where you pull ahead.
Cindra, Dracai of Retribution — Even
This is another race, and blocking decides it. Defend only when the block costs you less damage than it costs you a link next turn. Warmonger's Diplomacy is weak here, because an attacking deck will happily choose war. Pitch it unless you're far ahead and want to lock them out of non-attack actions. Oath of Loyalty is fine here, since everything you want to play on that turn is Draconic anyway.
Arakni, Marionette — Even
Arakni, Marionette is now listed as a Living Legend (source: fabtcg.com Card Legality Policy, as listed 2026-10-19). Confirm it is still legal at your event before you prepare for it. When you face it, plan around a steady stream of pressure rather than one burst. Keep one defense reaction in hand or arsenal on your crucial turns, and keep pushing a chain every turn. Use Mask of the Pouncing Lynx early to find whatever your hand is missing. Don't hold it for a perfect payoff that may not come.
Ser Boltyn, Breaker of Dawn — Even
The Kyoto-winning Ser Boltyn lists run Saving Grace and Soul Shield as defensive tools (source: fabtcg.com Calling: Kyoto and Pro Quest: London decklists, 2026-09-20 to 2026-10-19). If you see those come up as defense reactions, pitch Authority of Ataya on your biggest turn: it makes their defense reactions cost an extra resource that turn. Push long chains on those turns. Spread your damage over many links so no single block blunts the whole turn.
Control / fatigue strategies — Favored
Decks that answer one big threat at a time struggle against a stream of small go-again attacks. Use Warmonger's Diplomacy when a control opponent needs non-attack actions to set up. Remember that you choose too, so play it on a turn where your next turn is attack-only anyway. Rowdy Locals wears down their hand, and recurring Phoenix Flame through your hero ability means you rarely run out of attacks.
Draconic mirrors — Even
Fai had 17 entries at Kyoto (source: Calling: Kyoto Round 1 pairings, 2026-10-17/18), so expect the mirror. Both decks have the same engine, so tempo decides it. Arsenal a payoff such as Compounding Anger rather than a blank. Use Flamecall Awakening and Phoenix Bannerman: Head to keep Phoenix Flame flowing on turns your hero ability can't afford it. Save Blazen Yoroi for their link-4 swings.
Card Pool & Matchup Configuration
Classic Constructed runs on a registered 80-card card-pool: weapons, equipment and deck cards together. Before each game you choose your arena cards, then your deck cards, and the deck must start with at least 60 cards. At Callings you register online before the event and can't change that pool during the tournament. Matches are best of 1. Under the pre-game trial announced 2026-09-17, heroes are revealed at the same time, then arena cards at the same time, and then decks are presented. That means you build each game's deck after you've seen the opponent's hero and equipment.
This list registers exactly 80 cards: 9 arena cards and 71 deck cards. Every round you choose your equipment and leave out up to 11 deck cards.
Arena: Two Real Decisions
Your head, arms and weapon never change: Mask of the Pouncing Lynx, Tiger Stripe Shuko and Searing Emberblade. The choices come at chest, where the pool holds four pieces for one slot, and at legs, where it holds two.
| Slot | Card | Wear it when |
|---|---|---|
| Chest | Flamescale Furnace | Default. You've cut blues and your pitch zone fills with red. Temper keeps it around as a 2-defense blocker. |
| Chest | Blazen Yoroi | The opponent builds long combat chains. It gets +4 defense on chain link 4 or higher. |
| Chest | Fyendal's Spring Tunic | You expect a long, grindy game. It pays out one resource after three turns of charging. |
| Chest | Vest of the First Fist | The opponent rarely blocks your attack actions. It has 0 defense, so it is purely a 2-resource burst on hit. |
| Legs | Dragonscaler Flight Path | Default. It gives go again or a second Searing Emberblade swing, and gets cheaper with each Draconic link. |
| Legs | Boots of Omnis Ward | The opponent deals arcane damage. You trade your finisher for damage prevention. |
The Locked Core
These stay in every configuration because they are the Phoenix Flame loop and the chain-link count:
- All Phoenix Flame
- Brand with Cinderclaw, Ignite, Rise from the Ashes (both colours) and Art of the Phoenix: War
- Flamecall Awakening, Phoenix Bannerman: Head and Fire that Burns Within
- The cheap red go-again attackers: Ronin Renegade, Rising Resentment, Display Loyalty, Enflame the Firebrand, Spreading Flames, Blaze Headlong and Oath of Loyalty
The Flex Pool
Your 11 cuts come from this group.
- Shelter from the Storm, Sink Below: These are your defense against fast decks. Against slower opponents, trim them so you keep more attacks.
- Rowdy Locals, Tenacity: Both punish opponents who block. Rowdy Locals gains power when an action card defends it, and Tenacity scales with the number of defending cards. Cut both against opponents who take the hit.
- Authority of Ataya: Bring it against defense-reaction-heavy opponents. Defense reactions are common: Shelter from the Storm appeared in 16 lists and Sink Below in 15 of the 32 published CC lists (source: fabtcg.com decklist API, 2026-09-20 to 2026-10-19).
- Warmonger's Diplomacy: Bring it against opponents whose turns depend on non-attack actions, or whose weapon and attack turns you want to cut off. Each copy is also a blue pitch.
- Dragon Power, Salt the Wound: These Ninja cards are not Draconic by themselves. Dragon Power only gets its +3 after Brand with Cinderclaw or Enflame the Firebrand makes it Draconic. Cut both first when you want a cleaner Draconic count.
- Compounding Anger, Lava Burst, Cinderskin Devotion, Inflame: These scale with your chain length or support the loop. Keep them when you expect to build long chains uncontested.
Configurations by Opponent Type
Aggro:
- Keep all Shelter from the Storm and Sink Below, and wear Blazen Yoroi if their chains run long.
- Cut Tenacity, Salt the Wound, Dragon Power and Warmonger's Diplomacy for a lean, fast 60.
Heavy blockers and fortress decks:
- Keep every Rowdy Locals, plus Tenacity and Authority of Ataya.
- Trim defense reactions, since their pressure is lower.
- Wear Fyendal's Spring Tunic for the long game, or Flamescale Furnace if you are staying heavy red.
Arcane damage:
- Swap Boots of Omnis Ward in for Dragonscaler Flight Path.
- To make up for the lost finisher, keep Compounding Anger and Lava Burst so your long chains still close games.
Opponents who take hits:
- Wear Vest of the First Fist.
- Keep Salt the Wound, which gains power for each hit on the chain, and Rising Resentment.
Rules of Thumb
- Watch your pitch balance. Every blue you cut makes Flamescale Furnace more necessary. If you go below the full blue count, don't also drop the Furnace.
- Respect Oath of Loyalty. On an Oath turn you may only play Draconic cards. Every Generic or plain Ninja card you add is a dead card on those turns.
- Non-Draconic links are a tax. They don't count toward the discount on Fai, Rising Rebellion's ability, on Dragonscaler Flight Path, or on Compounding Anger. Add them only when they solve a specific matchup problem.
- Default to exactly 60. A tighter deck finds Phoenix Flame enablers more reliably.
One caution before you register: fabtcg.com's Card Legality Policy listed Fai, Rising Rebellion as a Living Legend on 2026-10-19, without giving the date it got there. A Living Legend hero leaves official play from the Friday after it reaches the threshold. Confirm the hero is still legal for your event before you build this pool.
Tech Choices & Variations
Every slot in this pool is already used. The 71 deck cards, Searing Emberblade and eight pieces of equipment add up to exactly 80, the Classic Constructed card-pool limit (source: fabtcg.com Classic Constructed format page, accessed 2026-10-19). Any tech you add costs you something already registered. Some cards don't move:
- Phoenix Flame and everything that fetches, discards or returns it.
- The zero-cost Draconic go-again attackers.
- The two Legendary singletons, Phoenix Bannerman: Head and Authority of Ataya, which can't go above one copy anyway.
The real decisions are in the chest and legs, the non-Draconic cards, and the counts on the two-ofs.
Chest: four options, one slot
| Chest | What it buys you | What it costs you |
|---|---|---|
| Flamescale Furnace | Net resources whenever two or more reds sit in your pitch zone after you've played a red card. In a deck that is almost all red, that is nearly every turn. It has 2 defense and Temper instead of Blade Break. | You pay up front, and it does nothing on a turn when you pitch blues. |
| Fyendal's Spring Tunic | A banked resource for a big turn in a long game. | It is slow to charge, has 1 defense, and Blade Break. |
| Vest of the First Fist | 2 resources on a hit, all at once, the turn you need them. | It has zero defense, so it is dead weight on your turn to block. |
| Blazen Yoroi | 5 defense against chain link 4 or higher. | It does nothing for your offence and has Blade Break. |
Furnace is the default. It is the only chest that scales with how this deck pitches. Choose another chest by opponent type:
- Vest: when you're racing and expect to swing rather than block.
- Yoroi: against opponents who build long go-again chains of their own. Those are exactly the attacks it stops.
- Tunic: against slow, grindy decks where the counters actually fill up.
Legs: tempo or damage prevention
Dragonscaler Flight Path is your offensive legs. With three Draconic chain links it activates for free. It gives a Draconic attack go again, or gives Searing Emberblade a second swing. That can turn an ordinary chain into lethal.
Boots of Omnis Ward trades that for one point of prevention and Temper. It gains +1 defense once you've been dealt arcane damage that turn. Wear the Boots when the opponent deals arcane damage or you expect to be the one defending. Otherwise, Flight Path is how this deck closes games.
Head and arms have no alternates registered. Mask of the Pouncing Lynx and Tiger Stripe Shuko both reward the low-base-power attackers this list is full of. Mask can fetch Lava Burst when you're already at link 3, so it arrives at link 4 with Rupture on. Replacing either one means cutting a deck card to register the alternative.
The non-Draconic cards and Oath of Loyalty
Oath of Loyalty limits the rest of your turn to Draconic cards. Pitching isn't playing, so your blues still pay for things. The cards it locks out on that turn are:
- Salt the Wound
- Tenacity
- Rowdy Locals
- Warmonger's Diplomacy
- Dragon Power, which also only gets its +3 when it's Draconic, through Brand with Cinderclaw or Enflame the Firebrand at three or more links.
To maximise Oath turns, swap the yellow singletons for a third Compounding Anger, a third Cinderskin Devotion or a second Inflame. The trade-off is real. Salt the Wound and Tenacity are your only pitch-2 cards, and they smooth awkward costs like a 2-cost Compounding Anger at one link. Tenacity also punishes opponents who block heavily, because it counts their defending cards.
Count adjustments
- Compounding Anger at 2, not 3: it's free 5 power at three links, but it has no go again and ends your chain. A third copy means more chains capped early.
- Inflame at 1: extra Phoenix Flame recursion at only 1 power. Add a second copy only if you find Flame access drying up in long games.
- Warmonger's Diplomacy at 3: each copy is a blue pitch that also constrains your opponent's next turn. You will normally choose war. Against opponents who rarely rely on non-attack actions, trim to two and play a third Cinderskin Devotion or a fourth blue attacker in its place.
- Rowdy Locals: best against opponents who defend with action cards from hand. Weaker against equipment-heavy blocking.
- Shelter from the Storm and Sink Below: keep all six against aggressive fields. Against slow decks, these are the first cuts for more pressure.
Tuning for the field
Fang, Levia SA, Arakni M, Jarl and Cindra each had more Round 1 entries than Fai at Calling: Kyoto (source: Calling: Kyoto Round 1 pairings, 2026-10-17/18). Arakni M is now listed as a Living Legend (source: Card Legality Policy, accessed 2026-10-19), so leave it out of your planning. Fai, Rising Rebellion is listed as a Living Legend on that same page, and Living Legend heroes leave official play. Confirm the hero is still legal for your event before tuning anything.
Sort what remains by strategy:
- Aggressive rooms: Blazen Yoroi, Boots of Omnis Ward, all six defense reactions.
- Defensive or controlling rooms: Flamescale Furnace or Vest of the First Fist, Dragonscaler Flight Path, Tenacity, Rowdy Locals, and Authority of Ataya to tax their defense reactions.
Budget Options
Before You Spend Anything
Check Fai's status first. As listed on 2026-10-19, the Card Legality Policy names Fai, Rising Rebellion among the Living Legend heroes. Under the Living Legend rules, a hero and its signature weapon leave official play from the Friday after the hero reaches 1000 points. The policy page doesn't give the date Fai crossed that line, and the 2026-10-13 Deck Dive said Fai hadn't reached it yet (sources: fabtcg.com Card Legality Policy, Living Legend page, Deck Dive – Pro Quest: London Week 3). Confirm on the official pages that you can still register this hero, and which weapon counts as its signature, before you buy toward the roughly $1035 full list.
That status changes how you spend. Buy the cards that move to other decks first. Buy the Fai-only pieces last.
Where the Money Probably Is
Most of the cost in a list like this usually sits in the equipment and the Legendary cards, not in the red attacks. Sort the list by your vendor's market price to confirm. Likely candidates:
- Chest slot: Fyendal's Spring Tunic, Blazen Yoroi, Vest of the First Fist and Flamescale Furnace. That is four chests, and you can only wear one in a given game.
- Other equipment: Mask of the Pouncing Lynx, Tiger Stripe Shuko, Dragonscaler Flight Path and Boots of Omnis Ward.
- Legendary cards: Authority of Ataya and Phoenix Bannerman: Head, limited to 1 copy each.
- Generic defense reactions: Shelter from the Storm and Sink Below.
The generic staples hold their value across decks. Across all 32 published CC lists, Fyendal's Spring Tunic appeared in 21, Shelter from the Storm in 16, Sink Below in 15 and Boots of Omnis Ward in 7 (source: fabtcg.com decklist API, 2026-09-20 to 2026-10-19). Generic cards go in any card-pool, so these purchases carry over if Fai leaves your format.
Budget Swaps and What They Cost You
Run one chest: Flamescale Furnace. The deck is almost entirely red, so the Furnace turns red cards in your pitch zone into extra resources nearly every turn. It also has the highest defense of the four chests.
Without the other three chests, you give up these options:
- Blazen Yoroi: the late-chain block against go-again aggro.
- Vest of the First Fist: the one-time burst of 2 resources on a hit.
- Fyendal's Spring Tunic: the slow resource bank.
You can still choose arena cards each game, but you'll have nothing to choose between in the chest slot.
Keep Dragonscaler Flight Path over Boots of Omnis Ward. Flight Path is the Draconic payoff. It gets cheaper with every Draconic chain link and can let Searing Emberblade swing an additional time. The Boots only do something extra against arcane damage, plus a one-time 1-damage prevention. Skip them until you face arcane opponents regularly.
Authority of Ataya → a third Cinderskin Devotion. You keep a blue pitch card. You lose the tax on your opponent's defense reactions on a big turn. You gain a Draconic attack with 3 defense that has go again once you control 2 or more Draconic chain links.
Phoenix Bannerman: Head → a second Inflame. Bannerman tutors a Phoenix Flame from the deck. Inflame can only rebuy one from the graveyard, and only after another red card has been played that turn. You're giving up consistency in hands that have no Flame.
Mask of the Pouncing Lynx and Tiger Stripe Shuko: these are the only head and arms pieces in the list, so you need something in those slots. Any legal placeholder will keep you playing. You lose two real effects:
- The Mask's one-time tutor for an attack with 2 or less power, which can find Phoenix Flame, Ignite or Lava Burst.
- The Shuko's unpreventable +1 on your second low-power attack each turn.
The Shuko costs you the most damage across a match. Prioritize it.
Don't Cut These
- The red Draconic attack suite, the 3 Phoenix Flame and both colors of Rise from the Ashes. This is the engine. Fai, Rising Rebellion's ability does nothing without Flames to loop.
- Brand with Cinderclaw. It was unbanned in CC on 2026-09-18, and both published Fai lists in the window run 3 copies (sources: fabtcg.com Banned and Restricted Announcement 2026-09-17; fabtcg.com decklist API).
- Searing Emberblade. It's your weapon, and the card-pool counts weapons and equipment within its 80 cards.
Upgrade Path
| Step | Add | Why now |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Full red core, Phoenix Flame, Rise from the Ashes, Searing Emberblade, Flamescale Furnace, Dragonscaler Flight Path | The functional deck. Everything else improves it. |
| 2 | Tiger Stripe Shuko, Mask of the Pouncing Lynx | The biggest jump in damage and consistency per slot. |
| 3 | Shelter from the Storm, Sink Below | Generic, so they transfer to any future deck. |
| 4 | Authority of Ataya, Phoenix Bannerman: Head | Polish for big turns and for hands without a Flame. |
| 5 | Blazen Yoroi, Fyendal's Spring Tunic, Vest of the First Fist, Boots of Omnis Ward | Matchup-specific equipment options. Buy last, and only if Fai is still legal for you. |
Common Mistakes
1. Paying full price for Fai
Fai's ability costs 3, minus one for each Draconic chain link you control. Activated before your first attack, a single Phoenix Flame costs you most of a hand. Activated at link 3 or later, it costs nothing. Wait until the chain has built. The ability is once per turn, so spend it when it is cheapest. The same discount applies to Dragonscaler Flight Path, so don't destroy it early for go again you could have bought for free two links later.
Fai also lets you start the game with a Phoenix Flame in your graveyard. Make that choice every game. A first turn with an empty graveyard gives your recursion nothing to return.
2. Leading with conditional go-again attacks
Several attacks only get go again once you control 2 or more Draconic chain links:
- Display Loyalty
- Enflame the Firebrand
- Cinderskin Devotion
Played as link 1, any of them ends your turn. Open with attacks that always have go again: Ronin Renegade, Brand with Cinderclaw, Ignite, Rising Resentment and Phoenix Flame. Put the conditional cards at link 3 or later.
Lava Burst follows the same rule. It is a 2-power body unless you play it as chain link 4 or higher. Compounding Anger also gets cheaper with each Draconic link, so it belongs at the end of the chain, not the start.
3. Treating "pitched" as "played"
Blaze Headlong, Flamecall Awakening and Inflame all check whether you've played another red card this turn. Pitching a red card for resources does not count. If you lead with Blaze Headlong, it has no go again. If you lead with Flamecall Awakening, you lose the Phoenix Flame search. Play a cheap red attack first, then these.
Flamescale Furnace works the same way. You can only activate it after you've played a red card this turn. It costs a resource and refunds one per red card in your pitch zone, so it only gains you resources when you've pitched two or more reds. Pitch your blues on a Furnace turn and you get nothing back.
4. Locking yourself out with Oath of Loyalty
Oath of Loyalty must be your first action. After you play it, you can only play Draconic cards for the rest of the turn. That shuts off these cards for the turn:
- Dragon Power
- Salt the Wound
- Tenacity
- Rowdy Locals
- Warmonger's Diplomacy
Before you open with Oath, check your hand. If the turn needs a non-Draconic card, pitch Oath or hold it. A 4-power opener isn't worth stranding the rest of your hand.
5. Wasting Brand with Cinderclaw on a Draconic follow-up
Brand with Cinderclaw makes your next attack this chain Draconic. That does nothing when the next attack is already Draconic. It matters a lot before Dragon Power, which gets +3 power only if it is Draconic. It also turns Salt the Wound, Tenacity or Rowdy Locals into Draconic links that count toward your chain-link thresholds.
When a non-Draconic attack is in hand, sequence Brand directly in front of it. At link 3 or later, Enflame the Firebrand makes all your attacks Draconic for the chain, so you don't need Brand for that job.
Also watch your Rise from the Ashes targets. It buffs the next Draconic or Ninja attack action card. A Searing Emberblade swing is a weapon attack, not an attack action card, so the buff waits for the next attack action card instead of landing on the sword.
6. Autopiloting Mask of the Pouncing Lynx and Tiger Stripe Shuko
When an attack action card hits, Mask of the Pouncing Lynx can fetch any attack action card with 2 or less power. Pick based on where the chain is now, not by habit:
- Hit on link 3: take Lava Burst and play it as link 4 with +3 power.
- Chain already at 3 links: take Enflame the Firebrand, which gets +2 power at 4 or more links.
Tiger Stripe Shuko boosts only the second attack action card with 2 or less base power you play each turn. That second card gets +1 power and damage that can't be prevented. Order your low-base-power cards so the one that benefits most comes second. Against a deck that relies on damage prevention, that is often Lava Burst at Rupture or a Draconic Dragon Power.
Don't destroy Vest of the First Fist for 2 resources on a hit unless you can spend that money this turn.
7. Blocking early with Blazen Yoroi
Blazen Yoroi defends for 1 until chain link 4. From link 4 on, it gets +4 defense and blocks for 5, then Blade Breaks. Putting it in front of a link-1 attack trades a 5-point block for 1. Save it for long go-again chains, which are exactly the turns where it is strongest.
8. Picking the wrong side of Warmonger's Diplomacy
In a two-player game, your opponent chooses first, then you. If you choose war, your next turn allows only weapon and attack actions. That blanks Rise from the Ashes and Phoenix Bannerman: Head in your hand. Instants like Art of the Phoenix: War are not actions, so they still work. Before you commit to war, count how many non-attack actions you're holding. If you hold several, consider pitching the Diplomacy as a blue instead of playing it.
Tournament Prep & Final Notes
Confirm Legality Before Anything Else
Check this first. The official Card Legality Policy lists Fai, Rising Rebellion as a Living Legend (source: fabtcg.com Card Legality Policy, as listed 2026-10-19). The fabtcg.com Deck Dive of 2026-10-13 said Fai had not yet reached that status, and the policy page doesn't give the date it changed. Under the Living Legend rules, a hero and its signature weapon leave official play from the Friday after the hero crosses the threshold (source: fabtcg.com Living Legend page, accessed 2026-10-19). Before you register this list, check the policy page to confirm Fai is still legal on your event date. At Callings, you register your deck online before the event and can't change it during the tournament. Any mistake here can't be fixed on the day.
What to Practice
- Counting Draconic chain links out loud. Almost every number in this deck depends on that count. It sets the cost of Fai, Rising Rebellion's ability, Dragonscaler Flight Path, Compounding Anger and Rising Resentment's banish limit. It also turns on Display Loyalty, Cinderskin Devotion and Enflame the Firebrand. Say the count at every link until it's automatic.
- Resource math with Flamescale Furnace. You can only activate it after you've played a red card this turn, and it pays out per red card in your pitch zone. Practice planning your pitch so the Furnace activation lands after the reds are pitched, not before.
- The Phoenix Flame loop. Drill turns where Phoenix Flame goes back and forth between hand and graveyard several times. Each card moves it a different way: Art of the Phoenix: War and Fire that Burns Within discard it, Rise from the Ashes, Inflame and Fai's ability return it, and Flamecall Awakening and Phoenix Bannerman: Head search for it. Know where every copy is at all times.
- Arena and deck choices at speed. The 80-card pool includes four chest pieces and two leg pieces. Each game you choose arena cards, then deck cards. Under the pre-game trial for this season, heroes are revealed at the same time, then arena cards, then decks are presented. Decide your default loadout and your deviations before the event so this step takes seconds.
Interactions to Know Cold
- Oath restrictions. Oath of Loyalty must be your first action of the turn. Once it's played, you may only play Draconic cards until end of turn. Salt the Wound, Tenacity, Rowdy Locals, Dragon Power and Warmonger's Diplomacy aren't Draconic cards, so plan around them before you lead with Oath.
- Making attacks Draconic. Brand with Cinderclaw makes your next attack this combat chain Draconic. Enflame the Firebrand at three or more Draconic links makes all your attacks Draconic this combat chain. This is how Dragon Power gets its +3, and how the generic attacks add to your Draconic count.
- Extra weapon swings. Dragonscaler Flight Path lets Searing Emberblade attack an additional time this turn, on top of the sword's once-per-turn limit. The Emberblade has go again by itself once you control two or more Draconic chain links.
- Shuko counts the second qualifying play. Tiger Stripe Shuko checks the second attack action card with 2 or less base power you play each turn. Phoenix Flame, Ignite, Inflame, Lava Burst and the 2-power attacks all qualify. Plan which one is second, because that attack gets +1 power and damage that can't be prevented.
- Chain link 4 matters on both sides. Lava Burst needs to be played as chain link 4 or higher to get its +3. Blazen Yoroi gets +4 defense when defending on chain link 4 or higher. Track the opponent's link count as well as your own.
- Hit triggers compete. Mask of the Pouncing Lynx and Vest of the First Fist both trigger when an attack action card you control hits. Before your first attack connects, decide whether you want a searched attack or 2 resources.
Clock Management
Rounds are best of 1 with 55 minutes on the clock. When time is called, the turn player finishes their turn, one more turn is played, and then the game is a draw. Fai takes long turns: many chain links, recursion and searches. Your job is to make each one fast, not shorter.
- Plan your full chain during the opponent's end phase, including your pitch and your Furnace timing.
- Do searches and shuffles crisply, and announce the chain link count as you go so judges and opponents don't have to stop you.
- When time is called, work out right away whether you get one turn or two. Build the most damaging line possible for those turns.
A draw rarely helps an aggressive deck, so keep up the pace from turn one.
Final Assessment
This list reached Top 4 at Calling: Kyoto 2026. It earns that kind of finish through redundancy, not raw power. There are nearly twenty ways to keep Phoenix Flame moving, a dense curve of zero-cost go again attacks, and equipment that rewards long Draconic chains. The skill ceiling is in the counting. Players who track chain links, red pitches and Flame locations without hesitation get full value from every turn. Players who miscount give away free resources and power. If Fai is still legal for your event, practice those counts until they're automatic.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the Fai, Rising Rebellion deck win games?
It wins through repeated turns of four-plus chain links that the opponent can't fully block, building long chains of 0-cost red go-again attacks. Damage comes from volume rather than one big swing, and threshold cards make the late links hit far above their printed numbers.
What is the Phoenix Flame engine in Fai and how does it work?
Fai lets you start with Phoenix Flame in your graveyard and, once per turn, returns it to hand for 3 resources minus one per Draconic chain link, so it is free at three links. Flamecall Awakening and Phoenix Bannerman: Head search for Flames, Rise from the Ashes and Inflame return them, and Art of the Phoenix: War and Fire that Burns Within discard them to draw cards.
Why does counting Draconic chain links matter so much with Fai?
At two links cards like Display Loyalty, Cinderskin Devotion and Searing Emberblade gain go again. At three, Fai's return and Dragonscaler Flight Path are free and Compounding Anger costs nothing. At four, Lava Burst ruptures for +3 power and Blazen Yoroi turns on when you defend.
What are the common mistakes when playing Oath of Loyalty?
Oath of Loyalty must be your first action, and afterward you can only play Draconic cards that turn. That shuts off Dragon Power, Salt the Wound, Tenacity, Rowdy Locals and Warmonger's Diplomacy, so lead with it only when your hand is all Draconic.
What are Fai's hardest matchups?
The guide lists Levia, Shadowborn Abomination as unfavored, because Levia lands fewer, larger hits and most of your cards defend for only 2. Save Sink Below and Shelter from the Storm for their biggest attacks, and race rather than trying to stall.
What budget swaps can I make for the Fai deck?
Run only Flamescale Furnace in the chest slot and keep Dragonscaler Flight Path over Boots of Omnis Ward. You can swap Authority of Ataya for a third Cinderskin Devotion and Phoenix Bannerman: Head for a second Inflame, at some cost in disruption and consistency.
What should I practice before taking Fai to a tournament?
Practice counting Draconic chain links out loud, timing Flamescale Furnace after your reds are pitched, and running the Phoenix Flame loop while tracking every copy. Also decide your default arena loadout and deviations before the event so choosing equipment takes seconds.
Is Fai, Rising Rebellion still legal in Classic Constructed?
