Archetype Overview
Mono Green Aggro turns every land drop into a combat trick. The list runs 26 lands alongside 34 spells. That count would be bloated in most aggro decks, but here it is the point: nearly every threat grows, multiplies, or gets doubled when a land enters. This build, piloted by Noine Kazuhiro, took 1st at the Champions Cup Premium Qualifier on 2026-10-17 in a 44-player field. What follows explains why the list is built to do that.
What the Deck Is
It is a mono-green landfall aggro deck with a real mana engine underneath. The threats are cheap and they scale:
- Sazh's Chocobo starts as a 0/1 and gains a counter for every land.
- Mightform Harmonizer doubles a creature's power on each landfall.
- Sapling Nursery makes a 3/4 reach Treefolk per land.
- Earthbender Ascension animates a land and banks quest counters toward trample.
The land base feeds all of this. Nine lands sacrifice themselves to fetch a basic: Fabled Passage, Elven Passage, and Escape Tunnel. Each one is two landfall triggers in a single land drop, one when it enters and one when the fetched Forest enters.
The Engine: Lands as Spells
Icetill Explorer is what turns a good aggro deck into a snowballing one. It grants an extra land drop each turn and lets you play lands from your graveyard. A fetch land you cracked earlier is now a land you can replay. One turn with Explorer out can look like this:
- Play a fetch and crack it.
- Replay a fetch from the graveyard and crack that too.
That is four landfall triggers from your land drops alone. Every one of them hits Sazh's Chocobo, Mightform Harmonizer, Sapling Nursery, and Earthbender Ascension at once. Explorer's own landfall trigger mills a card each time, which digs more lands into the graveyard to replay.
Carnivorous Cultivator slots directly into this loop:
- Its Enroot side puts any land card from your library straight into the graveyard, ready for Explorer.
- When it connects, it returns a land card from your graveyard to your hand.
- It is an Elf, as is Llanowar Elves. That gives you eight ways to behold an Elf for an untapped land off Elven Passage.
Why the Plan Is Strong
- Explosive damage from a small board. You control the order of your own triggers, so stack the Chocobo counter to resolve before the Harmonizer double. Take a Chocobo that already has two counters, warp Mightform Harmonizer on turn three, then play and crack a fetch. The Chocobo goes 3, then 6, then 7, then 14 power before combat. Opponents who block conservatively based on board state get punished.
- Warp keeps the mana efficient. Harmonizer's warp cost of {2}{G} lets it act as a burst spell on turn three. It is exiled at end of turn, and you can cast it again later as a permanent 4/4.
- The threats are spread across card types. You have creatures, two enchantment engines, and lands that become creatures. A single answer type doesn't shut everything off.
- A land animated by Earthbender Ascension or Ba Sing Se returns to the battlefield when it dies.
- Sapling Nursery can be exiled to make your Treefolk and Forests indestructible for a turn.
- Cavern of Souls makes the creature type you name uncounterable.
- Built-in reach and late game.
- Escape Tunnel makes a power-2-or-less creature unblockable for the turn. That covers a fresh 2/2 earthbent land or Carnivorous Cultivator, whose connection gets a land back.
- Esper Origins smooths draws early with surveil 2. Late, its flashback flips it into a 4/4 Saga creature whose final chapter gives your other creatures +2/+2 and trample.
- Keen-Eyed Curator eats graveyards from either side. Once it has exiled four card types, it becomes a 7/7 trampler, and Explorer's mills keep your own graveyard stocked with lands, creatures, sorceries, and enchantments to feed it.
- A perfect mana base. It's mono green with 13 Forests to fetch. Ba Sing Se almost always enters untapped, and Demolition Field gives you a way to punish nonbasic-heavy mana.
Where It's Vulnerable
The main deck's interaction is fight-based: one Bushwhack and one Meltstrider's Resolve. That means you need a creature on board to remove anything.
- Flyers can race you. The Treefolk have reach, but your other attackers do not.
- Cheap removal on your landfall payoff, held for the turn you commit, can blunt your biggest attack.
The sideboard shows what the list respects:
- Warg Tactics for flyers.
- Torpor Orb for enters-the-battlefield triggers.
- Origin of Metalbending and Leatherhead, Swamp Stalker for artifacts and enchantments.
- Surrak, Elusive Hunter and Mossborn Hydra as extra threats.
Who Should Pick It Up
This deck rewards players who like aggro but want decisions, not autopilot. You will be ordering stacked triggers, choosing which fetch to replay, and deciding when to warp Harmonizer versus hardcast it. You will also be timing Sapling Nursery around your Forest count. Players who sequence land drops carefully will get far more out of the list than players who just jam creatures.
It also suits you if you want a single-color deck with no mana headaches and a roughly $264 buy-in. And it suits you if you want a proactive deck that can still win from behind, because the deck makes 3/4s off land drops and its lands come back as creatures. If you prefer reacting to your opponent over forcing them to react to you, look elsewhere.
Core Strategy & Game Plan
Mono Green Aggro is a landfall deck that attacks. Every land you put onto the battlefield is a resource. It grows a creature, doubles a creature's power, makes a body, or advances a counter. The deck is built to make far more land drops than one per turn and to turn each one into damage. You win by stacking several land triggers in a single turn, until one creature or a wide board hits harder than the opponent can block.
How the Deck Wins
There are three kill routes, and most games use two of them at once:
- One huge attacker. Mightform Harmonizer doubles a creature's power on every landfall. Sazh's Chocobo gains a permanent counter on every landfall. Once Earthbender Ascension has four quest counters, each land adds a +1/+1 counter and gives trample, so your doubled damage goes through chump blocks.
- A wide board. Sapling Nursery makes a 3/4 reach Treefolk on every landfall. Two land drops a turn quickly outgrow any fair board.
- A team pump. Chapter III of the flashbacked Esper Origins gives your other creatures +2/+2 and trample for one turn.
The Engine: One Land, Many Triggers
Fabled Passage, Elven Passage, and Escape Tunnel are not just mana fixing here. Each one triggers landfall twice: once when it enters, and again when the basic it fetches enters. The rest of the deck exists to multiply those triggers.
- Icetill Explorer gives you an extra land drop each turn and lets you play lands from your graveyard. Your cracked fetch lands become land drops again, so each one can trigger landfall twice more on a later turn. Its own landfall mill can also put more lands into your graveyard to replay.
- Carnivorous Cultivator feeds the same loop from two directions. Its Enroot half puts a land straight from your library into your graveyard, ready for Explorer to replay. When it deals combat damage to a player, it returns a land card from your graveyard to your hand. With deathtouch, it is an attacker nobody wants to block.
- Earthbend, from Earthbender Ascension or Ba Sing Se, turns a land into a hasty creature. When that land dies, it returns to the battlefield tapped, which is another landfall trigger. If you earthbend a fetch land and later sacrifice it, you get the fetched basic and the returning land: two triggers. The fetch land then comes back as an ordinary land you can crack again next turn.
- Llanowar Elves speeds up your three- and four-drops. It is also an Elf, as is Cultivator, so it lets Elven Passage untap the basic it fetches.
When one land triggers both Chocobo and Harmonizer, you choose the order. Resolve the counter first, then the doubling. Doubling sets the bonus based on the creature's power when the trigger resolves, so the counter must already be on it.
Posture
You are the beatdown in almost every game. Your interaction serves the attack plan:
- Meltstrider's Resolve and Bushwhack fight a blocker out of the way. Fighting with a doubled creature kills almost anything.
- Treefolk reach and Cultivator's deathtouch make your blocks good enough to keep racing.
- Cavern of Souls protects a key Insect or Elf from counterspells.
- Sapling Nursery can exile itself to make your Treefolk and Forests indestructible. Earthbended Forests are creatures, so this protects them too. Save it for the turn a sweeper or a big combat would wipe you out.
Keen-Eyed Curator is a 3/3 for two that also attacks graveyard strategies. It is not a reason to slow down.
The Ideal Game, Turn by Turn
- Turn 1: Llanowar Elves or Sazh's Chocobo. Choose Elves if your hand is full of four-drops. Choose Chocobo if you hold fetch lands, since every later land grows it.
- Turn 2: With Elves, cast Earthbender Ascension. Earthbend a land into a hasty 2/2 and attack with it. The tapped basic it fetches adds a quest counter and triggers anything else you control. Without Elves, cast Carnivorous Cultivator, or Chocobo plus a one-mana play.
- Turn 3: Cast Icetill Explorer and use the extra land drop right away, ideally on a fetch land from your graveyard. Alternatively, warp Mightform Harmonizer for {2}{G} before your land drop so the land triggers it. Warp sends it to exile at end of turn, and you can recast it later for full value.
- Turn 4: Every Forest you control reduces the cost of Sapling Nursery, including the basics you fetched. Make two or more land drops, create a Treefolk on each, and attack with whatever your Harmonizer triggers made lethal.
- Turn 5 and later: Flash back Esper Origins if the game is still going, and use Ba Sing Se as a mana sink each turn. By now each land you play should be adding real damage to your attack.
You will rarely have every piece. When building toward a turn, count landfall triggers, not mana. Hold a fetch land until you have a payoff on the battlefield to trigger, and order your land drops so the doubling lands last.
Card Choices & Breakdown
The list runs 26 lands and 34 spells. That ratio is the whole deck: lands are the fuel, and almost every nonland card either pays you for a land entering or puts more lands into play.
One-Drops: Acceleration and an Early Clock
4x Llanowar Elves turns a turn-two play into a three-drop, which here means Earthbender Ascension or a warped Mightform Harmonizer. Elves is also an Elf, so it lets you behold for Elven Passage and fits a Cavern of Souls naming Elf.
4x Sazh's Chocobo is a 0/1 that grows on every landfall. Each fetch-style land in the list triggers it twice: once when the land enters, and again when the basic it finds enters. A turn-one Chocobo followed by a turn-two Fabled Passage that you crack immediately is a 2/3 by the end of that turn. It only pays off when it lands early, so it's a full playset.
Two-Drops: The Glue
4x Carnivorous Cultivator does more work than any other two-drop. You get a 2/3 deathtouch body that holds the ground against bigger creatures. When it connects, it returns a land from your graveyard to hand. The card also carries Enroot, a {G} sorcery that puts any land from your library into your graveyard. That lets you pick up the exact land you need, such as Demolition Field or Ba Sing Se, and then replay it with Icetill Explorer or bring it back with Cultivator's trigger. Cultivator is an Elf too, so it also enables behold.
1x Keen-Eyed Curator is a 3/3 for {G}{G} and a mana sink that removes cards from graveyards. It's here as main-deck graveyard interaction. The +4/+4 and trample are a bonus, not the reason it's in the list. Be careful about exiling your own lands, because that competes directly with Icetill's graveyard plays.
3x Esper Origins is two cards in one:
- Front side: for two mana, you surveil 2 and gain 2 life. That smooths your draws toward the lands or payoffs you're missing.
- Flashback for {3}{G}: it returns as a 4/4 Saga creature. Chapter III gives your other creatures +2/+2 and trample, which is a real finisher on a board of Treefolk tokens.
Icetill's mill can put a copy in your graveyard that you never cast, which gives you flashback access for free. It's three rather than four because the front side is low-impact on turn two of an aggro deck, and casting both halves costs six mana in total. Multiples drawn early are clunky.
Four-Drops: The Engines
4x Icetill Explorer doubles your landfall rate by giving you an extra land drop each turn. Its graveyard clause turns every sacrificed fetch land into a land you can replay. Each replayed Passage is two more triggers. The landfall mill keeps feeding you lands and Esper Origins to cast from the graveyard.
4x Mightform Harmonizer doubles a creature's power on every landfall, and a fetch land doubles it twice. Warp costs {2}{G}. The card has no haste, so you don't warp it to attack with it. You warp it before combat so its trigger is live for that turn's land drops, then you cast it again later from exile. It pairs best with a pumped Sazh's Chocobo or an earthbent land.
Enchantments: Threats That Dodge Creature Removal
4x Earthbender Ascension earthbends 2 for three mana. That gives you a hasty 2/2 land creature that comes back tapped when it dies. It then puts a basic onto the battlefield, which ramps you and gives the enchantment its first quest counter. Once it reaches four counters, every landfall adds a +1/+1 counter and grants trample.
4x Sapling Nursery costs {1} less for each Forest you control:
- With four Forests, it costs four mana.
- With six Forests, it costs {G}{G}.
That's why the list plays 13 basics, and every fetch converts into another Forest. After that, each landfall makes a 3/4 reach Treefolk. Its exile ability makes Treefolk and Forests indestructible until end of turn. That includes earthbent Forests, which protects your board from destroy effects.
Interaction
1x Bushwhack and 1x Meltstrider's Resolve (three more in the sideboard) are your fight effects. When Carnivorous Cultivator does the fighting, deathtouch kills whatever it hits.
- Bushwhack is never dead, because it can fetch a basic instead.
- Meltstrider's Resolve stays on the creature and leaves it harder to double-block.
The main deck keeps interaction light so it can goldfish. More Resolves come in after sideboarding against creature decks.
The Manabase
| Land | Count | Job |
|---|---|---|
| Forest | 13 | Powers Sapling Nursery affinity and lets Ba Sing Se enter untapped |
| Fabled Passage | 4 | Two landfall triggers; the basic untaps once you control four lands |
| Elven Passage | 4 | Two landfall triggers; pay 1 life, and behold an Elf to untap the basic |
| Ba Sing Se | 2 | Green source with a sorcery-speed earthbend mana sink |
| Escape Tunnel | 1 | Fetch, or make a creature with power 2 or less unblockable (Cultivator, or Chocobo before you pump it) |
| Demolition Field | 1 | Destroys an opposing nonbasic and fetches you a basic; reusable with Icetill Explorer |
| Cavern of Souls | 1 | Makes creature spells of the chosen type uncounterable |
The Cavern slot matters because counterspells are common in the blue decks at the top of the format. Spell Snare appears in all 22 Izzet Spellementals Top 8 lists and in 21 of 23 Dimir Aggro Top 8 lists (source: MTGTop8, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18).
When choosing a type, Elf covers Llanowar Elves and Carnivorous Cultivator. Insect covers Icetill Explorer and Mightform Harmonizer. Name the type whose creatures you most need to resolve right now.
The Decklist
This is the 60-card list and 15-card sideboard that took 1st Place at the Champions Cup Premium Qualifier on 2026-10-17 (44 players), piloted by Noine Kazuhiro. The main deck is 34 spells and 26 lands, and every basic is a Forest. Estimated cost is about $264 at TCGplayer market prices.
Main Deck (60)
| Qty | Card | Note |
|---|---|---|

| 13 | Forest | The only basic in the deck, so it is the target of every search effect. |
| 1 | Cavern of Souls | Flex. Name Insect for Icetill Explorer and Mightform Harmonizer, or Elf for Llanowar Elves and Carnivorous Cultivator. |
| 4 | Fabled Passage | Core. Two landfall triggers from one land drop. |

| 2 | Surrak, Elusive Hunter | Can't be countered and draws a card when an opponent targets your creatures. |
| 1 | Origin of Metalbending | Artifact or enchantment removal, or protects a creature from "destroy" effects. |
| 1 | Leatherhead, Swamp Stalker | A hexproof trampler that destroys an artifact or enchantment when it connects. |
| 2 | Warg Tactics | Kills a flyer, or gives a creature hexproof and trample at instant speed. |
Reading the List
Count your Forests. Many cards in the deck search for a basic land:
- Ten lands: four Fabled Passage, four Elven Passage, Escape Tunnel and Demolition Field.
- Four copies of Earthbender Ascension.
- One Bushwhack.
All of them pull from the same 13 Forests. In long games you can thin your library until a late fetch finds nothing, so track how many Forests remain before you crack one.
The fetch-heavy mana base is also the engine. Each fetch is two landfall triggers for Sazh's Chocobo, Mightform Harmonizer, Earthbender Ascension and Sapling Nursery.
When a fetch goes to the graveyard, Icetill Explorer lets you play it again. Carnivorous Cultivator can also return it to your hand when it deals combat damage to a player. Keep that in mind before you sideboard out either card.
Mulligan Guide
What a Keep Looks Like
This list runs 26 lands plus four Llanowar Elves, and a big share of those lands are fetches. Lands are not filler here. With Sazh's Chocobo, Mightform Harmonizer, Earthbender Ascension and Sapling Nursery, every land drop is a threat. That changes the usual aggro mulligan math: land-heavy hands are often keeps, and spell-heavy hands are the dangerous ones. A keepable seven has three things:
- Two or more lands, ideally including a fetch. Fabled Passage, Elven Passage and Escape Tunnel each give you two land entries for one land drop: the fetch itself, then the basic.
- A play on turns one or two. Llanowar Elves, Sazh's Chocobo, Carnivorous Cultivator or Esper Origins all count.
- At least one landfall payoff or engine. Mightform Harmonizer, Earthbender Ascension, Sapling Nursery or Icetill Explorer.
Hands with five lands and two payoffs are fine. Hands with one land are almost never fine.
Example Hands
Hand 1: Forest, Elven Passage, Fabled Passage, Llanowar Elves, Sazh's Chocobo, Mightform Harmonizer, Earthbender Ascension
Verdict: Snap keep. This hand does everything the deck wants:
- Turn one Llanowar Elves.
- Turn two Sazh's Chocobo before cracking Elven Passage, so the Chocobo gets two counters. Beholding the Elves untaps the fetched Forest, leaving you mana open.
- Turn three Earthbender Ascension or Mightform Harmonizer, with the second fetch saved for a big landfall turn.
Hand 2: Forest, Forest, Forest, Forest, Ba Sing Se, Sapling Nursery, Icetill Explorer
Verdict: Keep. It looks floody, but four Forests make Sapling Nursery cost four. Icetill Explorer then lets you play two lands a turn, and each one makes a 3/4 reach Treefolk. Ba Sing Se enters untapped next to a basic and gives you a mana sink. Expect a slow start and a dominant middle game.
Hand 3: Forest, Llanowar Elves, Carnivorous Cultivator, Sazh's Chocobo, Mightform Harmonizer, Esper Origins, Keen-Eyed Curator
Verdict: Ship. It is cheap and active, but it has one land and no Bushwhack. Your payoffs feed on land drops, so a hand that misses them is running at half power even if it hits two lands eventually. Esper Origins digs only two cards deep. The Enroot side of Carnivorous Cultivator puts a land in your graveyard, not your hand, so it can't fix this hand without an Icetill Explorer already in play.
Hand 4: Forest, Forest, Bushwhack, Llanowar Elves, Sapling Nursery, Mightform Harmonizer, Icetill Explorer
Verdict: Keep on both the play and the draw. Bushwhack effectively counts as your third land, and Llanowar Elves puts four-drops online on turn three. If you face a creature you need to remove, Bushwhack's fight mode keeps it live late.
Hand 5: Forest, Elven Passage, Sapling Nursery, Sapling Nursery, Mightform Harmonizer, Icetill Explorer, Esper Origins
Verdict: Ship on the play. Keep on the draw only against control. Two lands and nothing to do before turn two puts you behind any proactive opponent. A slower opponent gives you time to hit lands, and the extra draw helps. Double Sapling Nursery is also a strong top end in a long game.
Hand 6: Forest x4, Fabled Passage, Escape Tunnel, Sazh's Chocobo
Verdict: Ship. The Chocobo will grow, but it is your only spell. One removal spell leaves you with a hand of lands and nothing to cast.
On the Play vs. On the Draw
On the play, you are the aggressor. Weight your keeps toward one- and two-drops, because a slow hand gives up your main advantage.
On the draw, two-land hands with four-drops get much better. The extra card both smooths your land drops and adds a landfall trigger. Hands built around Sapling Nursery and Icetill Explorer are your best draw-side keeps, because they win long games even after a slow start.
Matchup Adjustments
Dimir Aggro, Izzet Spellementals and Dimir Control were the three most-represented archetypes in Top 8s, with 23, 22 and 21 of 200 slots (source: MTGTop8, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). Expect to face them.
- Against aggro (Dimir Aggro, Orzhov Aggro, UR Aggro): Value early blockers. Carnivorous Cultivator's deathtouch body and the reach Treefolk from Sapling Nursery both blunt early pressure. Esper Origins' life gain adds a little cushion. Ship slow hands that do nothing until turn four, even on the draw.
- Against control (Dimir Control, UW Control, 4/5C Control): Threat count matters more than curve. Keep hands with several payoffs over hands full of one-drops. Cavern of Souls is a premium land here, because it makes the creature spells it casts uncounterable. Name Insect to cover Icetill Explorer and Mightform Harmonizer.
- Against Jund Sacrifice and other grindy midrange: Favor hands with Icetill Explorer or Sapling Nursery. They generate value every turn and hold up in a long game.
- Against Izzet Spellementals: Treat it like a hybrid. You want an early clock, but don't keep a hand that empties itself by turn three with nothing left to follow up.
Sequencing & Key Lines
The Core Rule: Spells Before Lands
Nearly every payoff in this list reads "whenever a land you control enters." That makes your land drop the most valuable action of the turn, and you should almost never make it first. Cast your one-drops, your Mightform Harmonizer, and your Earthbender Ascension first. Then play the land. The exception is when you need the mana to cast the payoff at all.
The fetch lands (Fabled Passage, Elven Passage, Escape Tunnel) give you two landfall triggers each: one when the fetch enters and one when the basic it finds enters. Don't spend them early on an empty board. Use plain Forest drops on turns one and two, and save the fetches for turns when Sazh's Chocobo, Harmonizer, Ascension, or Sapling Nursery are on the battlefield. Play Ba Sing Se only after you control a basic, so it enters untapped.
The Standard Opening
- Turn 1: Forest, Llanowar Elves. If you have Elven Passage and no Forest, crack it and behold the Elves in your hand. The basic untaps and you still cast your one-drop.
- Turn 2: Before your land drop, tap Elves for Sazh's Chocobo. Then play Forest so the Chocobo gets its counter immediately. Use your two lands to cast Carnivorous Cultivator.
- Turn 3: Tap two lands and Elves to warp Mightform Harmonizer, then play Fabled Passage.
- Order the two landfall triggers so the Chocobo's counter resolves first and the doubling resolves second.
- Attack. Crack the Passage only after blockers are declared.
- The second set of triggers adds another counter and doubles again, and you pick the target after you've seen the blocks.
Done this way, an unblocked Chocobo hits for 10 on turn three, with Cultivator and Elves attacking beside it. Two details drive that number:
- Counters before doubling. A counter added after a doubling adds only 1. A counter added before it gets doubled with everything else.
- Harmonizer targets on resolution of each trigger. Each doubling can go on whichever creature went unblocked.
Fetches and Demolition Field Are Combat Tricks
Fetch activations, and Demolition Field's ability, work at instant speed. That turns your landfall into post-block damage.
- Play the fetch precombat, crack it after blocks. You get one trigger now and keep the second as a trick the opponent can't block around.
- Demolition Field mid-combat. It puts your basic onto the battlefield untapped, so it is a landfall trigger that also costs the opponent a land. Keep {2} open for it.
- The Escape Tunnel line.
- Before blocks, sacrifice Tunnel to make a creature with power 2 or less unblockable. Chocobo early, or Carnivorous Cultivator.
- After blocks, crack a fetch and double that creature's power. Unblockability was checked when Tunnel targeted, so raising the power afterward is fine.
- If Cultivator connects, its trigger returns a land card from your graveyard to your hand, often the Tunnel itself.
- Fights. Make your land drop first, then cast Meltstrider's Resolve or fight-mode Bushwhack. The doubled power lasts until end of turn, so it applies to the fight.
Icetill Explorer Turns
Icetill Explorer turns every fetch into four triggers in one turn:
- Play the fetch.
- Crack it for a basic.
- Replay the fetch from your graveyard as your extra land drop.
- Crack it again.
The Explorer's mill triggers and the surveil from Esper Origins can put more lands into the graveyard for you to play. If your Cultivator's Enroot half is available to you, its land search also puts a land straight into the graveyard. When you have Keen-Eyed Curator out alongside Explorer, aim its exile ability at the opponent's graveyard. Your lands in the yard are future land drops.
Branch Points
- Ascension or Harmonizer on turn three? It depends on open mana.
- If the opponent is tapped out or light on interaction, cast Harmonizer for the burst.
- If they hold up mana, cast Earthbender Ascension. It ramps you, and its earthbent land attacks with haste.
- An earthbent land that dies returns to the battlefield, which is another landfall trigger. Removing it feeds your engine.
- When to cast Sapling Nursery. Wait until you've stopped playing Forests, so the affinity has made it cheap. Then hold your remaining fetches for after it resolves. Each fetch then makes two 3/4 reach Treefolk.
- Racing an aggro deck. Keep Carnivorous Cultivator home as a deathtouch blocker until your doubling turn is ready.
Playing Around the Format's Interaction
Cheap interaction is everywhere. Spell Snare is in the main deck of 21 of 23 Dimir Aggro Top 8 lists and all 22 Izzet Spellementals Top 8 lists (source: MTGTop8 deck exports, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). Against blue opponents with untapped mana, your two-drops are the cards most exposed to it.
- Bait with two-drops. Lead with Carnivorous Cultivator, Esper Origins, or Keen-Eyed Curator to draw the counter. Save the four-drops for when shields are down.
- Cavern of Souls. Name Insect to protect both Icetill Explorer and Mightform Harmonizer. Name Elf only if your hand leans on Elves and Cultivator.
- Doubling into open mana. If they kill the target in response to a Harmonizer trigger, the pump is gone. Hold the second fetch crack until they have committed to an answer.
- Use earthbent lands as decoy targets. If the opponent kills one, it comes back and gives you a new landfall trigger.
- Post-board Dimir games. Day of Black Sun is in the sideboard of 22 of 23 Dimir Aggro Top 8 lists (same source and dates). Don't overcommit creatures you don't need. If Sapling Nursery is on the battlefield, keep {1}{G} open so you can exile it to make your Treefolk and Forests indestructible.
Matchup Matrix
The field this list has to beat is, according to the brief, built around blue-based decks and a grindy Jund shell. Dimir Aggro, Izzet Spellementals and Dimir Control took the most Top 8 slots, and Jund Sacrifice converted the most wins (source: MTGTop8, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). Your edge in almost every matchup is the same: you produce more landfall triggers per turn than the opponent can answer, and those triggers come from creatures, enchantments and lands all at once.
| Matchup | Verdict | What decides it |
|---|---|---|
| Dimir Aggro | Even | Whether your blockers stabilize the early board before a landfall engine comes online |
| Izzet Spellementals | Even | Speed: does your turn-three or turn-four threat stick before they take over |
| Dimir Control | Even | Diversifying threats across creatures, enchantments and lands |
| Jund Sacrifice | Even | Whose engine generates more bodies over a long game |
| Orzhov Aggro | Favored | Your bodies are bigger than theirs |
| UW Control | Favored | Not overextending into a single answer |
| Other aggro (red-based, Dragons) | Even | Handling flyers and racing |
| Graveyard combo | Even | Clock speed plus timely graveyard exile |
| Green landfall mirrors | Even | Fights, deathtouch and who doubles first |
Dimir Aggro — Even
This is the most-represented deck in the brief, with 23 of 200 Top 8 slots across 15 of 25 events (source: MTGTop8, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). It also took 2nd and a Top 4 slot at the same Fukuoka PQ this list won. Lead with defense:
- Carnivorous Cultivator has deathtouch, so it trades with anything that attacks into it.
- Icetill Explorer's 4 toughness holds the ground.
Once the board is stable, turn the corner with Mightform Harmonizer power doubling or a stream of Treefolk from Sapling Nursery. Their main decks are interaction-heavy: Spell Snare appears in 21 of 23 Top 8 lists (source: MTGTop8 deck exports, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). Use Cavern of Souls on your key creature type rather than defaulting to Elf.
Izzet Spellementals — Even
You are the beatdown here, so don't durdle. Plan your Llanowar-accelerated curve around the threat you need to resolve. Mightform Harmonizer's warp cost lets you get a doubled hit in for {2}{G} without exposing a four-drop to sorcery-speed answers on your own turn. Earthbender Ascension and Sapling Nursery are enchantments, which gives you threats that don't line up against creature-focused interaction. Every Spellementals Top 8 list carries Colorstorm Stallion in the sideboard (source: MTGTop8 deck exports, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18), so expect their post-board games to shift.
Dimir Control — Even
This deck won 3 events from 21 Top 8 slots (source: MTGTop8, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). Make them answer three different card types:
- Lands: Ba Sing Se earthbends a land into a hasty creature, and that land returns tapped when it dies.
- Enchantments: Sapling Nursery keeps making 3/4s as long as you hit land drops.
- Creatures: spread them out rather than committing everything.
Don't dump your hand. Keep one landfall payoff in reserve. Before you crack Fabled Passage or Elven Passage, make sure a payoff is on the battlefield to cash in the trigger.
Jund Sacrifice — Even
Jund Sacrifice took the most wins of any archetype, 4 from 16 Top 8 slots (source: MTGTop8, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). It wants a long game, so win the value race:
- Icetill Explorer replays fetch lands from your graveyard, which turns each Passage into multiple landfall triggers.
- Carnivorous Cultivator's combat-damage trigger refunds lands.
If their creatures generate value as they enter, Torpor Orb from the sideboard shuts those triggers off. It does not touch your Ascension or Nursery, since neither is a creature.
Orzhov Aggro — Favored
Your creatures are simply bigger:
- A 2/3 deathtouch, a 2/4 and a 4/4 for four.
- 3/4 reach Treefolk tokens.
- Esper Origins gains life and digs with surveil.
Block early, use Bushwhack or Meltstrider's Resolve to fight their best attacker, and let the size gap end it.
UW Control — Favored
The reasoning matches Dimir Control: you spread threats across permanent types. The difference is that UW Control lacks Dimir's main-deck pressure, so you have more time to develop. Sapling Nursery's exile ability gives your Treefolk and Forests indestructible until end of turn. Hold {1}{G} open when you suspect a destroy effect is coming. The way to lose is overcommitting creatures into one answer when Nursery alone would have won.
Other aggro — Even
Ground races favor your toughness, but flyers go over your creatures. Treefolk tokens have reach, and Warg Tactics in the sideboard destroys a flyer at instant speed. Keep your Llanowar Elves count high in opening hands so you outpace them on board.
Graveyard combo — Even
Keen-Eyed Curator exiles target card from a graveyard for {1}. Keep that mana up during their key turns, and present a fast clock so they have to act before they're ready.
Green landfall mirrors — Even
Mono Green Aggro and Mono Green Landfall together held 21 Top 8 slots (source: MTGTop8, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). Your Bushwhack and Meltstrider's Resolve are fight effects, so fire them on a turn when a Mightform Harmonizer trigger has doubled your creature's power. Carnivorous Cultivator's deathtouch blocks any oversized landfall threat, so keep one home.
Sideboard / Tech Guide
Your sideboard does four jobs: extra fight removal for creature mirrors, uncounterable and hard-to-target threats for control, graveyard and enters-trigger hate for combo, and narrow answers to flyers and permanents. Every plan below swaps one-for-one so you stay at 60. The archetypes named are the ones most present in recent Standard Top 8s (source: MTGTop8, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18).
| Matchup | In | Out |
|---|---|---|
| Dimir Aggro, Orzhov Aggro, other creature aggro | 3 Meltstrider's Resolve | 3 Esper Origins |
| Izzet Spellementals | 2 Surrak, Elusive Hunter, 2 Mossborn Hydra | 3 Esper Origins, 1 Keen-Eyed Curator |
| Dimir Control, UW Control, 4/5C Control | 2 Surrak, Elusive Hunter, 3 Mossborn Hydra, 1 Leatherhead, Swamp Stalker | 2 Llanowar Elves, 2 Sazh's Chocobo, 1 Meltstrider's Resolve, 1 Bushwhack |
| Jund Sacrifice | 3 Meltstrider's Resolve (+2 Torpor Orb if warranted) | 3 Esper Origins (−2 Llanowar Elves) |
| Superior Reanimator, Superior Doomsday | 2 Mossborn Hydra, 2 Torpor Orb if warranted | 2 Esper Origins, 1 Meltstrider's Resolve, 1 Bushwhack |
Creature Aggro (Dimir Aggro, Orzhov Aggro)
Dimir Aggro took the most Top 8 slots of any archetype, 23 of 200 (source: MTGTop8, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). Expect it. Against creature decks, the full set of Meltstrider's Resolve turns every creature you have into removal. Put it on Carnivorous Cultivator and deathtouch kills anything it fights. The +0/+2 also helps your creature survive the exchange. Esper Origins is too slow against a deck that is turning creatures sideways, so it comes out.
If game 1 showed you flying threats, add 2 Warg Tactics and cut 2 Sapling Nursery. The Nursery costs the most in the early turns, which is when these games are decided.
Plan for their post-board games too. Day of Black Sun appears in 22 of the 23 Dimir Aggro Top 8 sideboards (source: MTGTop8 deck exports, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). Know that card's text before the event, and don't commit creatures to the board that you don't need.
Izzet Spellementals
Here you need pressure that sticks. Surrak, Elusive Hunter can't be countered, and it draws you a card whenever the opponent targets one of your creatures or creature spells. That makes their interaction cost them cards. Mossborn Hydra costs three, enters with a counter, and doubles that counter on each landfall. It is a trampling threat that gets huge off two land drops.
Esper Origins does nothing to the board on the early turns, so it goes. Keen-Eyed Curator is the most cuttable body. Every Spellementals list runs Eddymurk Crab and Hearth Elemental (source: MTGTop8 deck exports, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18), so keep Bushwhack and Meltstrider's Resolve in as fight removal.
Control (Dimir Control, UW Control, 4/5C Control)
Against control, your one-drops cost you more than they gain. Llanowar Elves and Sazh's Chocobo are weak top-decks once the opponent stabilizes. Replace them with threats that can carry a game alone:
- Mossborn Hydra: trample, and it grows fast off landfall.
- Surrak, Elusive Hunter: can't be countered, and it draws when targeted.
- Leatherhead, Swamp Stalker: a 5/4 trampler that enters with a hexproof counter. When it connects, you can remove a counter to destroy an artifact or enchantment the opponent controls. Removing the hexproof counter makes it targetable, so only spend it on a permanent that matters.
Fight spells have few targets here, so cut Bushwhack and the main-deck Meltstrider's Resolve. Cavern of Souls stays. Name the creature type of the threat you most need to resolve.
Jund Sacrifice
Jund Sacrifice won the most events of any archetype, 4 (source: MTGTop8, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). Start with the creature-matchup plan: 3 Meltstrider's Resolve in for 3 Esper Origins.
Add Torpor Orb only if game 1 shows their creatures getting value when they enter. In that case, bring in both copies for 2 Llanowar Elves, your weakest card in a long game. The Orb barely touches your own plan:
- Landfall triggers come from lands entering, not creatures.
- Earthbender Ascension is an enchantment.
- Your Treefolk tokens entering trigger nothing of yours.
- Mossborn Hydra enters with its counter rather than triggering for it.
Graveyard Combo (Superior Reanimator, Superior Doomsday)
Your main graveyard answer is already in the main deck. Keen-Eyed Curator's {1} activation has no timing restriction, so keep mana open and exile their key card in response, not on your own turn. Add 2 Mossborn Hydra to speed up the clock.
Only bring in Torpor Orb if their payoff does its work when it enters. Before relying on the Orb in any matchup, confirm with a judge how it interacts with Esper Origins's transformed side, since that side enters as a creature with chapter abilities.
The Narrow Answers
- Warg Tactics: bring it in against decks whose key threats fly, including Boros Dragons if their threats do. Its other mode gives a counter, trample and hexproof at instant speed. Use it to protect a creature you are about to double with Mightform Harmonizer.
- Origin of Metalbending: for a game-deciding artifact or enchantment, or as instant-speed indestructible against "destroy" removal. Bring it in for the last Esper Origins or a Bushwhack.
Tech Choices & Variations
The engine of this list is fixed: Llanowar Elves, Sazh's Chocobo, Icetill Explorer, Mightform Harmonizer, Carnivorous Cultivator, Earthbender Ascension, Sapling Nursery and the eight fetch-style lands. Cutting any of those weakens the landfall core. The real decisions are the singletons, the Esper Origins count, and the utility land package. That's where you tune for your room.
Flex Slot Summary
| Slot | Job in the list | Reasonable swap | What you give up |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1x Keen-Eyed Curator | Two-drop body plus graveyard exile on demand | Meltstrider's Resolve #2 | Graveyard hate and a late-game mana sink |
| 1x Bushwhack | Land tutor or fight | Warg Tactics | A guaranteed land drop that feeds landfall |
| 3x Esper Origins | Smoothing early, a 4/4 Saga threat late | Surrak, Elusive Hunter or Mossborn Hydra | Surveil, the life buffer, and two cards' worth of value from one slot |
| 1x Cavern of Souls | Uncounterable creatures of one type | Forest #14 | Protection against counterspells |
| 1x Demolition Field | Land destruction plus an untapped basic | Forest #14 or Ba Sing Se #3 | An answer to a key opposing land |
| 1x Escape Tunnel | Fetch or one-shot unblockable | Fabled Passage is already maxed, so Forest | The evasion mode |
Spell Flex
Esper Origins at 3 is the main tuning knob. Surveil 2 can bin a land for Icetill Explorer to replay. The flashback cast becomes a 4/4 whose chapter III gives your board +2/+2 and trample. Against creature-light control decks, go to 4. A card that comes back as a threat is exactly what you want there.
Against decks that pressure you early, Mossborn Hydra is the stronger three-mana play. It's a real body on turn 3 that grows off every fetch. The cost is that it's one more creature for cheap removal to answer.
Surrak, Elusive Hunter is the best main-deck upgrade in a field full of counters and targeted removal. It can't be countered, it tramples, and it draws you a card whenever an opponent targets one of your creatures or creature spells. Those draws trigger off spells cast against any of your creatures, not only Surrak. It takes the Esper Origins slots, not a core creature.
Meltstrider's Resolve is your main-deck removal. In creature-heavy rooms, a second main-deck copy over Keen-Eyed Curator is reasonable. Remember that it's an Aura. If they kill your creature in response, you lose both cards.
Bushwhack stays because neither mode is ever dead. Only cut it for Warg Tactics if you expect a lot of flying threats.
Utility Land Package
Every non-Forest land makes Sapling Nursery cost more. Two other effects to track:
- Ba Sing Se enters tapped without a basic.
- Cavern of Souls only taps for colorless outside its chosen type.
Three non-Forest utility singletons plus two Ba Sing Se is about the ceiling before Nursery gets clunky.
- Cavern of Souls: name Insect. That covers all eight four-drops, the cards counterspells most want to hit. Go to two copies only if you expect heavy counterspell density, and cut Demolition Field first.
- Escape Tunnel: the unblockable mode on Carnivorous Cultivator gets you a land back from your graveyard. Use it before a landfall trigger from Mightform Harmonizer doubles the Cultivator's power. Unblockability set at 2 power sticks for the turn, even after the power goes up.
- Demolition Field: it gives the opponent a basic too, so it's for a land that matters, not for mana denial. Your basic enters untapped, which is a free landfall trigger. Against a field with no key lands, swap it for a Forest.
- Ba Sing Se #3: a flood mitigator for grindy rooms. Take out a Forest only if you're cutting Demolition Field or Cavern of Souls as well.
Tuning for Your Field
The most-represented archetypes in recent Standard Top 8s were:
- Dimir Aggro: 23 of 200 slots.
- Izzet Spellementals: 22 slots.
- Dimir Control: 21 slots.
(source: MTGTop8 event pages, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). Jund Sacrifice took the most event wins, with 4 (source: MTGTop8 event pages, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18).
- Control-heavy room (Dimir Control, UW Control, Izzet Spellementals): Run 4 Esper Origins. Consider Surrak, Elusive Hunter over Keen-Eyed Curator. Keep Cavern of Souls and add a second copy if you have one.
- Creature-heavy room (Dimir Aggro, Orzhov Aggro, Jund Sacrifice): Move a second Meltstrider's Resolve into the main deck. Cut Esper Origins to 2 for Mossborn Hydra. Swap Demolition Field for a Forest.
- Graveyard decks present: Superior Reanimator posted 6 Top 8 slots (source: MTGTop8 event pages, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). Keep Keen-Eyed Curator. It's your only main-deck graveyard exile, and it doubles as a cheap body.
- Landfall mirror: Mono Green Aggro and Mono Green Landfall together held 21 Top 8 slots (source: MTGTop8 event pages, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). Value Keen-Eyed Curator for shutting off graveyard lands and flashback. Value Meltstrider's Resolve for winning creature fights.
Torpor Orb stays in the sideboard in every configuration. It only stops abilities triggered by creatures entering, so your landfall triggers are untouched. Bring it in only when you know the opponent's engine runs on creature enter triggers.
Budget Options
The full 75 runs about $264 (TCGplayer market prices; approximate). Thirteen of the main-deck slots are basic Forest, so nearly all of that money sits in two places: the nonbasic land suite and the four-of creatures and enchantments that make up the engine. Check current prices before you buy, because the right budget build depends on which specific cards are expensive when you shop.
Where the Money Likely Is
- Nonbasic lands: Cavern of Souls, 4 Fabled Passage, 4 Elven Passage, 2 Ba Sing Se, Demolition Field and Escape Tunnel. These are the most likely place for a single card to carry a big share of the total.
- The engine four-ofs: Mightform Harmonizer, Icetill Explorer, Carnivorous Cultivator, Earthbender Ascension and Sapling Nursery. Any expensive card in this group multiplies by four.
- Sideboard creatures: 4 Mossborn Hydra, 2 Surrak, Elusive Hunter and Leatherhead, Swamp Stalker.
Budget Swaps, in Order of Least Damage
Swap only the cards that are actually expensive when you buy. The table lists cuts in the order that costs you the least.
| Cut | Replace with | What you give up |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Cavern of Souls | 1 Forest | Uncounterable threats against counterspell decks |
| 2 Ba Sing Se | 2 Forest | A late-game mana sink that turns spare mana into an attacker |
| 1 Demolition Field | 1 Forest | Removal for a nonbasic land, plus a free extra land drop |
| 1 Escape Tunnel | 1 Forest | One extra landfall trigger, or one unblockable hit |
| Fabled Passage / Elven Passage | Forest | A real loss of power: see below |
Cavern of Souls is the cleanest cut, but know what it does. Naming Insect makes Mightform Harmonizer and Icetill Explorer uncounterable. Those four-drops are exactly what blue decks want to answer. Spell Snare appeared main deck in 21 of the 23 Dimir Aggro Top 8 lists, and in 1-3 copies in all 22 Izzet Spellementals Top 8 lists (source: MTGTop8, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). If your room is heavy on blue, Cavern is the first card to buy back.
The basic-land swaps have a small upside. Every Forest you add makes Sapling Nursery cost one less thanks to its affinity. Basics also help Ba Sing Se enter untapped, and Earthbender Ascension and Bushwhack can find them. A Forest-heavy budget build is clunkier than the full list, but its mana is not worse.
Cut the fetch lands last. Fabled Passage, Elven Passage and Escape Tunnel each turn one land drop into two landfall triggers: the fetch land enters, then the basic it finds enters. That means two counters on Sazh's Chocobo, two Treefolk from Sapling Nursery, two quest counters on Earthbender Ascension, and two power doublings from Mightform Harmonizer.
The sacrificed land also lands in your graveyard. Icetill Explorer can replay it for yet more triggers, and Carnivorous Cultivator can return it to your hand. Replacing all eight Passages with basics turns this into a fair green beatdown deck. If you have to, keep Elven Passage over Fabled Passage: Llanowar Elves and Carnivorous Cultivator let you behold an Elf and untap the fetched land early, while Fabled Passage only untaps once you control four lands.
What Not to Cut
There is no budget substitute for Mightform Harmonizer, Icetill Explorer, Sapling Nursery, Earthbender Ascension, Carnivorous Cultivator or Sazh's Chocobo. These cards are the deck. If they are out of reach, build a different deck rather than a watered-down version of this one.
The cheap one-mana pieces (Llanowar Elves, Bushwhack, Meltstrider's Resolve) belong in every version.
Budget Sideboard
Buy the sideboard matchup by matchup, starting with what you actually face. The extra Meltstrider's Resolve, Warg Tactics and Origin of Metalbending cover creature fights, flyers, and artifacts or enchantments.
Torpor Orb is the narrowest card in the 75, so put it on your list only if your local field leans on creatures with enter-the-battlefield triggers.
Against counterspell-heavy decks without Cavern of Souls, Surrak, Elusive Hunter matters more, since it can't be countered and draws you a card whenever an opponent targets your creatures. Prioritize it in that case.
Upgrade Path
- Engine first: the six core four-ofs, Llanowar Elves, Esper Origins and the one-ofs, with Forest filling every nonbasic land slot.
- Elven Passage and Fabled Passage: the biggest jump in power per dollar, because they double your landfall output.
- Cavern of Souls: buy it immediately if your field is blue-heavy. Otherwise buy it after the Passages.
- Escape Tunnel, Demolition Field and Ba Sing Se: the last few percent of main-deck power.
- The sideboard creatures: Mossborn Hydra, Surrak, Elusive Hunter and Leatherhead, Swamp Stalker, in the order your matchups demand.
Common Mistakes
1. Cracking Fetch Lands on Autopilot
Fabled Passage, Elven Passage, and Escape Tunnel are landfall doublers. The fetch entering is one trigger, and the basic it finds is a second. When you play one on an empty board and crack it immediately, you throw away the second trigger. The default is to hold the sacrifice until Mightform Harmonizer, Sazh's Chocobo, Earthbender Ascension, or Sapling Nursery is on the battlefield. Crack early only when you need the color or mana that turn.
Know the untap conditions before you crack:
- Fabled Passage untaps the basic only if you control four or more lands.
- Elven Passage costs 1 life, and its basic untaps only if you behold an Elf. Llanowar Elves and Carnivorous Cultivator both count, on the battlefield or revealed from hand.
If neither condition is met, plan your turn around a tapped land.
2. Ordering Triggers So the Doubling Resolves First
Mightform Harmonizer doubles power as the trigger resolves. Counters placed afterward don't get doubled. When one land triggers both the Harmonizer and Sazh's Chocobo, or adds an Earthbender Ascension counter, stack the doubling trigger so it resolves last. With two Harmonizer triggers from a fetch, the counters land first, then the creature doubles twice. Getting this order backward is the difference between a lethal attack and a merely large one.
3. Pumping Before the Power-Sensitive Effects
Some effects care about power at different points, so sequence around them:
- Escape Tunnel can only target a creature with power 2 or less. Use it before the doublings, while the creature is still small. The creature stays unblockable after it grows.
- Meltstrider's Resolve and Bushwhack are the opposite. Their fights use current power, so make your landfall triggers in the first main phase, then fight with the inflated creature.
A doubled Mightform Harmonizer fighting through Meltstrider's Resolve removes almost any blocker, and the Aura then stops more than one creature from blocking it.
4. Forgetting That Icetill Explorer Turns the Graveyard Into Land Drops
Icetill Explorer gives you an extra land drop each turn and lets you play lands from your graveyard. That makes every sacrificed fetch, every land milled by its own landfall trigger, and every land Carnivorous Cultivator's Enroot puts in the graveyard a future landfall trigger.
The common miss is replaying a fetch from the graveyard and then cracking it again. With the Explorer out, one Fabled Passage can generate four triggers in a turn.
The earthbend version is also easy to overlook:
- Earthbend a fetch with Earthbender Ascension or Ba Sing Se.
- Sacrifice it. As a creature, it dies.
- It returns to the battlefield tapped, which is another landfall.
5. Mis-Sequencing Sapling Nursery
Sapling Nursery's affinity counts only Forests. Fetches and Ba Sing Se don't reduce its cost until a fetch actually puts a Forest onto the battlefield. If your Forests already make the Nursery affordable, cast it before your land drop. Then play and crack the fetch for two Treefolk instead of zero.
The other error is cashing in the exile ability too early. The Nursery is your engine. Spend the {1}{G} to make your Treefolk and Forests indestructible only when it actually saves your board, such as in response to a destroy-based sweeper. Against decks that can sweep, hold that mana up on the turn you overextend.
6. Warping Harmonizer With No Landfall to Follow
Warp on Mightform Harmonizer costs {2}{G} for a creature that gets exiled at the next end step. It earns its value only on a turn when you also make one or more landfall triggers and attack. If you have no land to play, warping it just spends your mana for nothing. Cast it normally, or hold it, and recast it from exile on the turn you have a fetch or a Icetill Explorer replay lined up.
7. Letting Keen-Eyed Curator Eat Your Own Resources
Keen-Eyed Curator can exile from any graveyard, and racing to four card types tempts you into exiling your own cards. Don't. Your graveyard holds:
- Land drops for Icetill Explorer.
- Targets for Carnivorous Cultivator's combat-damage trigger.
- Esper Origins, waiting to be flashed back into a 4/4 Saga creature.
Pull card types from the opponent's graveyard first, especially against graveyard strategies like Superior Reanimator, a Top 8 archetype in the period (source: MTGTop8, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). Treat your own yard as a last resort.
8. Naming Elf on Cavern of Souls by Reflex
Your two most important creatures, Icetill Explorer and Mightform Harmonizer, are both Insects. They are also the four-drops a counterspell deck most wants to stop. Against countermagic-heavy control, name Insect. Elf is right only when you're short on early plays and need Cavern of Souls to color a two-mana Carnivorous Cultivator.
Tournament Prep & Final Notes
What to Practice
- Goldfish your landfall turns until the math is automatic. Every fetch you crack is two landfall events: one when Fabled Passage, Elven Passage or Escape Tunnel enters, and one when the basic it fetches enters. With Mightform Harmonizer, Sazh's Chocobo, Earthbender Ascension and Sapling Nursery on the table, one land drop can put four or more triggers on the stack. Practice counting your damage before you attack, not during combat.
- Run the graveyard loop. Icetill Explorer lets you play lands from your graveyard and gives you an extra land drop each turn. A fetch you cracked earlier is a fetch you can play and crack again. Build the habit of checking your graveyard for land drops every turn. Lands binned by Enroot, by Esper Origins's surveil, and by Explorer's own mill all count.
- Get your reps in against the decks you will actually face. Dimir Aggro (23 slots), Izzet Spellementals (22) and Dimir Control (21) took the most Top 8 slots (source: MTGTop8 event pages, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). Jund Sacrifice won the most events, with 4 (source: MTGTop8 event pages, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). Spend your testing time there.
- Practice your sideboard swaps. Change your deck between games cleanly and quickly, then change it back for game 1 of the next round. A Premium Qualifier is not the place to present a 59-card deck.
Rules Interactions to Know Cold
- Put Mightform Harmonizer's trigger on the stack first. When a land enters and both the Harmonizer and a counter source trigger, stack them so the +1/+1 counters resolve first. Your counter sources are Sazh's Chocobo and Earthbender Ascension once it has four or more quest counters. The doubling then applies to the bigger number. Two Harmonizer triggers on the same creature double it twice.
- Use Warp for a burst turn. Cast Mightform Harmonizer for {2}{G} in your main phase, then make your land drops and crack fetches so it doubles your attacker. It is exiled at the beginning of the next end step, and you can cast it from exile on a later turn. Warp it before your lands, not after.
- Escape Tunnel only checks power when you target. Choose its second ability to make a creature with power 2 or less unblockable. Pumping that creature afterward does not undo it. Making Carnivorous Cultivator unblockable guarantees its combat damage, which returns a land card from your graveyard to your hand. You can also make a small creature unblockable and then double it with landfall.
- Earthbent lands come back as new landfall. A land animated by Ba Sing Se or Earthbender Ascension returns to the battlefield tapped when it dies or is exiled. That is a land entering, so trading it in combat feeds your landfall triggers. Note that Ba Sing Se enters tapped unless you already control a basic land, so sequence a Forest first.
- Behold with an Elf from your hand. Elven Passage untaps the fetched land if you behold an Elf, and an Elf card in your hand counts. Both Llanowar Elves and Carnivorous Cultivator qualify. The Passage costs 1 life each time, so track that total against aggro.
- Fabled Passage untaps only if you control four or more lands. That count happens after the basic enters, so if you are sitting on three lands, the fetched land still comes in tapped.
- Sapling Nursery's affinity counts Forests only. Ba Sing Se, Cavern of Souls, Demolition Field and uncracked fetches do not reduce its cost. Fetched basics do. Its exile ability gives your Treefolk and Forests indestructible until end of turn, which includes Forests you have earthbent into creatures.
- Choose the right type for Cavern of Souls. Insect covers Icetill Explorer and Mightform Harmonizer. Elf covers Llanowar Elves and Carnivorous Cultivator. Its colored mana only casts creatures of the type you chose. Counterspells appear in both the Dimir Aggro and Izzet Spellementals Top 8 lists (source: MTGTop8 deck exports, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18), so name the type of the threat they most need to stop.
- Flashback transforms Esper Origins. Cast from your graveyard, it becomes a 4/4 Saga creature with a finality counter. Chapter II adds {G}{G}. Chapter III gives your other creatures +2/+2 and trample, so plan that turn as a kill turn.
- Demolition Field's basic enters untapped. That is another landfall trigger. Your opponent also gets a basic, so use it on a land that actually matters.
- Torpor Orb does not touch your landfall. It stops abilities that trigger when creatures enter, and your engine triggers when lands enter.
Clock and Time Management
This is an aggro deck, so you rarely go to time because of slow kills. You go to time because of shuffles and trigger chains. Keep these habits:
- Shuffle quickly after every fetch.
- Present your deck for a cut immediately.
- Announce each trigger out loud as it goes on the stack.
- Track quest counters on Earthbender Ascension, +1/+1 counters on Sazh's Chocobo, and lore counters on Esper Maduin with clearly placed dice.
When the win is already on board, don't spend minutes building an elaborate stack for extra damage you don't need. Make the lethal attack and move on. Save the long sequencing for turns where the extra damage actually decides the game.
Final Assessment
This list won a 44-player Champions Cup Premium Qualifier in Fukuoka. It is not a one-off result. Mono Green Aggro also won the 75-player Kichijoji PQ on 2026-10-16 (source: MTGTop8 event pages, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). Standard had no changes at the 2026-10-12 announcement, and the next one is 2026-11-30 (source: Wizards of the Coast, Banned and Restricted Announcement, 2026-10-12).
The deck's strength is redundancy. Your lands, fetches and graveyard recursion all turn into damage through the same few landfall payoffs. Its weakness is that the payoffs are creatures and enchantments. Against heavy interaction you have to deploy threats in the right order rather than all at once.
If you can count a Harmonizer turn in your head and play around a counterspell with Cavern of Souls, this is a deck you can register for a qualifier with confidence.
