Archetype Overview
Orzhov Aggro is a low-curve white-black creature deck built on one idea: every creature that enters is also a lifegain trigger, and every lifegain trigger becomes damage, cards, or a bigger threat. You aren't a lifegain deck that hopes to outlast anyone. You use life as fuel for a board that grows faster than your opponent can answer it. Tsubahara Hikaru took this 60 to a Top 4 finish at a 44-player Champions Cup Premium Qualifier on 2026-10-17.
The Engine
The list splits into enablers and payoffs, and most cards are one or the other.
- Enter-trigger enablers: Hinterland Sanctifier, Aunt May, Liliana the Faultless, Haliya, Guided by Light and Case of the Uneaten Feast each gain you 1 life whenever a creature you control enters. That's fourteen cards whose only demand is that you keep casting creatures, which the rest of the deck already does.
- Per-trigger payoffs: Amalia Benavides Aguirre explores on every lifegain event. Starscape Cleric makes each opponent lose 1 life on each one. Leonardo, Cutting Edge and Essence Channeler add +1/+1 counters, and Ajani Resolute adds loyalty.
- End-step payoffs: Haliya, Guided by Light draws if you gained 3 or more life that turn. Enlightened Confidant surveils and can return a card whose mana value is no higher than the life you gained. Moseo, Vein's New Dean returns a creature card from your graveyard with mana value no higher than that number. Lunar Convocation drains, and Case of the Uneaten Feast solves once you hit 5.
These stack in two ways. Per-trigger payoffs multiply: with two enablers out, one creature entering is two separate lifegain events, so Amalia Benavides Aguirre explores twice and Starscape Cleric drains twice. End-step payoffs reward volume: the more triggers you pack into a turn, the bigger the card Moseo, Vein's New Dean can bring back and the more likely Enlightened Confidant puts its surveil card into your hand.
Why the Plan Is Strong
Redundancy. You don't need a specific two-card combo. Any enabler plus any creature does something, and every extra piece makes the next one better. A turn-one Hinterland Sanctifier turns every later creature into extra value.
Built-in token generators. Moseo, Vein's New Dean brings a Pest with it, so it counts as two entering creatures. Voice of Victory creates two Warrior tokens every time it attacks, and each one triggers every enabler you control. A board of Voice of Victory, Hinterland Sanctifier and Case of the Uneaten Feast gains you 4 life from one attack before damage.
Protection on your own turn. Voice of Victory says your opponents can't cast spells during your turn. While it's on the battlefield, they can't use instant-speed removal or tricks during your combat, and they can't respond while your end-step triggers resolve. Their window to interact moves to their own turn, after your value has already landed.
Recovery from removal. Answering this deck one creature at a time is a losing trade for the opponent. Moseo, Vein's New Dean reanimates. A solved Case of the Uneaten Feast lets you cast creature cards from your graveyard for a turn, and each one re-triggers your enablers on the way back. Haliya, Guided by Light, Enlightened Confidant and Lunar Convocation keep cards flowing, so a removal-heavy opponent rarely leaves you empty-handed.
Life is a resource you spend. Godless Shrine, Multiversal Passage, Starting Town and the draw ability on Lunar Convocation all cost life. That cost is cheap in a deck that gains it back every turn, and it does real work. Having lost life this turn gives Essence Channeler flying and vigilance. Gaining and losing life in the same turn makes Lunar Convocation create a flying Bat.
Reach without combat. Starscape Cleric and Lunar Convocation drain whether you attack or not. When the board stalls, your triggers still close the game.
Where It's Vulnerable
The bodies are small. Most of your creatures have 1 or 2 toughness, and the engine lives in those creatures. Effects that kill several small creatures at once, or a fast start that removes your one-drops on curve, stall you more than any single spot removal spell does.
Your main-deck interaction is thin. The answers are two copies of Erode, which handles a creature or planeswalker for one mana but gives the opponent a basic land. You are trying to race, not control the board.
Amalia Benavides Aguirre destroys all other creatures, including yours, the moment its power is exactly 20. Count its counters every time it explores.
Who Should Pick It Up
Play this if you like being the proactive deck and you're comfortable tracking a lot of small numbers at once:
- how many life-gain events happen on each creature drop
- how much life you've gained this turn when your end step begins
- which of your end-step triggers to resolve first
The deck rewards counting: small edges in trigger math and sequencing turn into extra cards and extra damage. If you'd rather react, hold up answers and win late, this isn't your deck. If you want a list that punishes slow starts and keeps rebuilding after removal, it fits well.
Be ready for the time it takes on paper. Every creature drop can create several triggers, so practice resolving them cleanly and quickly before you sit down for round one.
Core Strategy & Game Plan
The Plan
Orzhov Aggro turns creatures entering the battlefield into lifegain triggers, then turns those triggers into damage, counters, and cards. Life total is irrelevant. What matters is the number of separate lifegain events per turn, because every payoff in the deck triggers on "whenever you gain life," not on how much.
Enablers and Payoffs
Your enablers are the cheap bodies that fire when another creature enters. Hinterland Sanctifier, Aunt May, Liliana the Faultless, Haliya, Guided by Light, and Case of the Uneaten Feast each gain you 1 life per creature entering. Stack two of them and every creature you cast becomes two triggers. Lifelink from Enlightened Confidant and Leonardo, Cutting Edge, the Pest from Moseo, Vein's New Dean, and Ajani Resolute's 0 ability add more.
Your payoffs scale per event:
- Amalia Benavides Aguirre explores on every trigger. It either grows or pulls lands into your hand. Ward forces your opponent to pay 3 life to target it.
- Starscape Cleric drains 1 per trigger. Paying offspring gives you two drain sources, and the token entering is itself another enabler trigger.
- Essence Channeler and Leonardo, Cutting Edge take a +1/+1 counter per trigger.
- Ajani Resolute takes a loyalty counter per trigger, so its −4 and eventually its −10 come online fast on a wide board.
Multi-body cards are worth more than their mana suggests. Moseo, Vein's New Dean brings two entries, itself and the Pest. Voice of Victory's mobilize creates two tokens every attack, and each one triggers every enabler you control.
Losing Life on Purpose
Lunar Convocation drains 1 at your end step if you gained life. It makes a 1/1 flier if you also lost life. Essence Channeler gains flying and vigilance once you've lost life that turn. Your manabase makes losing life free value:
- Starting Town costs 1 life for colored mana.
- Godless Shrine and Multiversal Passage cost 2 life to enter untapped.
- Convocation's own draw ability costs 2 life.
When you have a Convocation out, pay the life on the turn you'd otherwise lose nothing. The Bat it creates is another creature entering, so it fires another round of enabler triggers.
Posture: Proactive, With a Shield
You are the beatdown in nearly every game. Your interaction is light: two Erode main, which costs you tempo by ramping your opponent a basic land. Use it to clear a blocker or kill a creature that shuts down your engine. Don't use it to trade one-for-one in a long game. Your real defense comes from three cards:
- Voice of Victory stops your opponents from casting spells during your turn. Your combat steps and end-step triggers become safe from instant-speed answers.
- Liliana the Faultless can discard a card to give an engine piece hexproof.
- Amalia Benavides Aguirre taxes removal through ward.
Win the End Step
Your end step is where games are decided. Several of your triggers check how much life you gained this turn when they resolve, not when they trigger:
- Moseo, Vein's New Dean's Infusion uses that amount as X.
- Haliya, Guided by Light draws only if you've gained 3 or more.
- Enlightened Confidant compares the surveiled card's mana value to that amount.
Order your triggers so Moseo resolves first. The creature it returns enters and fires your enablers before Haliya and Confidant check the total. A Haliya, Guided by Light cast for its {W} warp cost still has her draw trigger going on the stack alongside her exile trigger. Warping her on a big turn effectively makes her a one-mana cantrip that triggers your board and returns later.
The Ideal Game
- Turn 1: An enabler, ideally Hinterland Sanctifier or Aunt May. Starting Town and Concealed Courtyard both enter untapped this early.
- Turn 2: Amalia Benavides Aguirre or Enlightened Confidant. Amalia is on the battlefield when the Sanctifier trigger resolves, so she explores immediately.
- Turn 3: Moseo, Vein's New Dean for two entries, or a two-drop plus a warped Haliya, Guided by Light to reach 3 life gained and draw.
- Turn 4: Voice of Victory plus a one-drop, or Lunar Convocation with a pay-life land. From here every attack and every creature drains, grows, or draws.
By turn five you should be closing. Amalia will be large. Drain from Starscape Cleric and Lunar Convocation supplies reach that doesn't need to connect in combat. Amalia's power-exactly-20 board wipe is a rare bonus, never the plan.
The Backup Plan
Your answer to a board wipe is already on the battlefield. Case of the Uneaten Feast solves once you gain 5 or more life in a turn, which is easy with two enablers and a multi-body play. Hold it solved. If your board gets wiped, sacrifice it on your next turn and recast creatures from your graveyard. Each recast creature triggers every enabler you've already rebuilt. Moseo, Vein's New Dean provides a slower version of the same recovery, one creature per end step. Commit enough to pressure your opponent. When you're ahead, keep a solved Case or a Moseo in reserve rather than overextending your last threats.
Card Choices & Breakdown
The Trigger Base: Cheap "Creature Enters" Engines
The deck runs on stacked triggers. Each of these cards turns every creature you cast into at least 1 life, and several on the table at once turn one creature into several separate gains.
- Hinterland Sanctifier (4): The cleanest one-drop engine in the list. It is a 1/2 for {W} that gains 1 life whenever another creature you control enters. You want it on turn one every time you can.
- Case of the Uneaten Feast (4): A second copy of the same trigger on an enchantment, so it dodges creature removal. Solving it needs 5 or more life gained in one turn, which this deck reaches on its multi-creature turns. Once it is solved, sacrificing it lets you cast creature cards from your graveyard that turn. That is your rebuild after a sweeper.
- Liliana the Faultless (2): The same trigger, plus a protection mode. Pay {1}, tap her and discard a card to give another creature or planeswalker hexproof until end of turn, which shields Amalia Benavides Aguirre or Ajani Resolute from a removal spell. She is legendary, so the count stays at two.
- Aunt May (1): The fifth and sixth trigger sources need to cost {W}, and she fills one of them. The list has no Spiders, so the counter clause does nothing here. She is legendary and a 0/2, which is why there is only one.
The Payoffs
- Amalia Benavides Aguirre (4): Your best threat. Each gain makes her explore: a land goes to your hand, and anything else gives her a +1/+1 counter. Ward—Pay 3 life taxes removal hard against a deck that is draining your opponent. When you reveal a nonland card you can bin it, which stocks targets for Moseo, Vein's New Dean and Case of the Uneaten Feast. If her power ever lands on exactly 20, she destroys every other creature, including yours. Count your counters before you stack triggers late in a game.
- Enlightened Confidant (4): A two-drop with lifelink, so it gains life by itself. Its end-step surveil 1 returns the card to your hand if that card's mana value is at or below the life you gained this turn. On a big turn it becomes card advantage, and on a quiet turn it still smooths your draws.
- Starscape Cleric (2): Your reach. It drains each opponent for 1 every time you gain life. With offspring at five total mana you get a token copy that drains too, so every gain counts twice. It can't block, which caps the count against faster decks. The third copy sits in the sideboard for slower opponents.
- Essence Channeler (1): Grows with every gain. It flies with vigilance on any turn you've lost life, which your shocklands and Starting Town often arrange without effort. When it dies it passes its counters to another creature, so removal on it rarely wipes out your progress. One copy because it is a strong body rather than an engine.
- Leonardo, Cutting Edge (1): Lifelink and a counter on every gain. Sneak for {W} lets you return an unblocked attacker to hand during combat and drop Leonardo tapped and attacking. Returning a creature like Moseo, Vein's New Dean means recasting it, which re-fires its enters effect and every "enters" trigger on your board. The legend rule keeps it at one copy.
Value Threes
- Haliya, Guided by Light (3): Triggers on herself and on every creature or artifact you play afterward, and draws a card at end step if you gained 3 or more that turn. Warp for {W} buys her enter trigger cheaply on a crowded turn and lets you cast her again later. Three copies because she is legendary and you never want two stuck in hand.
- Moseo, Vein's New Dean (3): Two bodies, a flier and a Pest, so two rounds of enter triggers. Its end-step reanimation returns a creature card with mana value up to the life you gained this turn. Most of your creatures cost one or two, so that bar is low. The legend rule again caps it at three.
- Voice of Victory (2): Opponents can't cast spells during your turn, which shuts off instant-speed removal and counterspells while you develop. Its two mobilize tokens are creatures entering, so each attack fires every enters trigger you control twice more. Two copies because a 1/3 is weak if you draw several.
Lunar Convocation and Ajani Resolute
- Lunar Convocation (3): Drains 1 at end step whenever you gained life. If you also lost life that turn, it makes a 1/1 flying Bat, and that Bat entering is one more trigger. Its own draw ability costs 2 life, so it turns on the Bat clause by itself. Three copies because a second copy adds damage but not board presence.
- Ajani Resolute (2): Gains loyalty on every lifegain event. Its 0 ability gains 1 life, which feeds Amalia, Starscape Cleric and every counter-grower on your board. The −4 makes a growing Ajani's Pridemate token. Two copies because a second planeswalker on the same turn rarely adds as much as another creature.
Removal
Erode (2) kills any creature or planeswalker at instant speed for {W}. The cost is that it can give your opponent a basic land, which matters more early than late. The list carries only two main because your plan is racing, not trading. The third copy waits in the sideboard for creature-heavy opponents.
The Mana: 22 Lands
The curve tops out at three before offspring, so 22 lands is enough, especially with Amalia's explores pulling extra lands. The manabase is built to cost you life, and that is deliberate. Godless Shrine, Multiversal Passage and Starting Town's colored mode all let you lose life on demand. That switches on Lunar Convocation's Bat clause and Essence Channeler's flying. Concealed Courtyard comes in untapped on the early turns that matter most. Starting Town enters untapped through turn three but only makes colorless mana for free. Black requirements are light, so the list plays a single Swamp and four Plains. Bleachbone Verge needs a Plains or Swamp for white. Godless Shrine counts as both, and Multiversal Passage can be named either, so it almost always taps for both colors.
The Decklist
This is the 60 and 15 Tsubahara Hikaru registered for a Top 4 finish at the 44-player Champions Cup Premium Qualifier on 2026-10-17. The main deck runs 27 creatures, 11 noncreature spells and 22 lands, at roughly $273 by TCGplayer market prices. Cards are grouped by job below. Flexible slots get a note on what they are doing.

Reading the List
Count the triggers. Hinterland Sanctifier, Aunt May, Liliana the Faultless, Haliya, Guided by Light and Case of the Uneaten Feast give you 14 permanents that gain life whenever a creature enters. Everything else in the deck converts that life gain into counters, drain, cards or recursion.
The mana costs you life on purpose. Starting Town, Godless Shrine and Multiversal Passage all charge life, and paying it counts as losing life:
- Losing life turns on the Bat clause of Lunar Convocation, which needs you to have both gained and lost life that turn.
- It also gives Essence Channeler flying and vigilance.
Set Multiversal Passage to Plains or Swamp in most games. Either type also enables the white mana from Bleachbone Verge. Name Forest only when Professor Dellian Fel is in your deck and you need the green.
Mulligan Guide
What a Keepable Seven Looks Like
The deck runs 22 lands and almost nothing above three mana, so you rarely need more than three lands. What you need is colors, an enabler, and a payoff. Check for:
- Two or three lands that cover both colors. Starting Town counts as either color on turns one through three (for 1 life), and Multiversal Passage can be named Swamp. Bleachbone Verge only makes white once you control a Plains or Swamp.
- At least one enabler. These are the cards that gain life when your creatures enter: Hinterland Sanctifier, Aunt May, Liliana the Faultless, Haliya, Guided by Light and Case of the Uneaten Feast. Enlightened Confidant and Leonardo, Cutting Edge also gain life through lifelink.
- At least one payoff that turns those triggers into damage or cards: Amalia Benavides Aguirre, Starscape Cleric, Moseo, Vein's New Dean, Lunar Convocation, Ajani Resolute, Essence Channeler.
Two lands with a one-drop and a two-drop is a keep. A hand with no turn-one or turn-two play is usually a mulligan, because the engine only works if it starts early.
Example Hands
- Godless Shrine, Starting Town, Hinterland Sanctifier, Amalia Benavides Aguirre, Enlightened Confidant, Haliya, Guided by Light, Case of the Uneaten Feast
Snap keep. On turn one, pay 1 life to Starting Town for Sanctifier. On turn two, cast Amalia: Sanctifier's trigger gains life as she enters, so she explores right away. Haliya on three makes every later creature a double trigger. This is the hand the deck is built to draw. - Plains, Plains, Amalia Benavides Aguirre, Moseo, Vein's New Dean, Starscape Cleric, Lunar Convocation, Ajani Resolute
Ship. The only spell you can cast is Ajani. Most of the mana base makes black, but this hand needs a black source and an enabler, and it needs both before turn three. A strong-looking seven that does nothing is still a mulligan. - Plains, Concealed Courtyard, Starting Town, Hinterland Sanctifier, Aunt May, Liliana the Faultless, Case of the Uneaten Feast
Keep, reluctantly. You have three lands, both colors and four plays, but no payoff. Every creature you draw after this triggers three or four lifegain effects, which solves Case and turns on anything you topdeck. The hand has almost no power on board, though. Keep it against aggro. Against control it is close to a mulligan. - Starting Town, Hinterland Sanctifier, Aunt May, Liliana the Faultless, Erode, Enlightened Confidant, Leonardo, Cutting Edge
Ship on the play. Still ship on the draw. This is the most tempting trap the deck offers. Every card is cheap, but every white spell off Town costs life, and missing your second land strands Confidant and Leonardo. Your deck wants its second land on turn two, and this hand is gambling on it. - Godless Shrine, Multiversal Passage, Swamp, Voice of Victory, Enlightened Confidant, Lunar Convocation, Ajani Resolute
Keep. It has no one-drop, but it has a full curve, both colors and real card flow from Convocation's draw ability. It gets better against interactive decks, as covered below.
On the Play vs. On the Draw
On the play, value speed. Turn-one enabler into turn-two Amalia or Confidant is the start that wins races. Ship hands that are slow and only "fine," because your opponent hasn't developed yet and you want to punish that.
On the draw, you can keep slower, sturdier sevens. That means two-landers with Erode, hands built around Haliya and Convocation, or hands whose early plays are blockers like Sanctifier, Aunt May and Voice of Victory. The extra card covers a weaker opener, and early bodies matter more when you're defending.
On six, put the most expensive or most redundant card on the bottom. Keep at least one enabler. Prefer keeping Starting Town over a tapped land, since it fixes your colors when you need them most.
Matchup Adjustments
The most-represented archetypes in recent Standard Top 8s were Dimir Aggro, Izzet Spellementals and Dimir Control. Jund Sacrifice took the most event wins (source: MTGTop8, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). Adjust your keeps by what each kind of deck asks of you.
- Aggro (Dimir Aggro, Mono Green Aggro): Prioritize early bodies and lifegain over card advantage. Hands with Sanctifier, Aunt May, lifelink from Confidant or Leonardo, and Erode go up in value. Hand 3 is a comfortable keep here. A slow hand built on Moseo and Ajani is not.
- Control (Dimir Control, UW Control): One-power enablers alone don't threaten them. Keep hands with payoffs and card flow: Lunar Convocation, Haliya, Confidant, and Amalia Benavides Aguirre, whose ward makes every removal spell cost 3 extra life. Voice of Victory makes a hand much better, because opponents can't cast spells during your turn. That protects everything you cast after it and stops them from answering your attackers on your turn.
- Izzet Spellementals: Like control, a hand with Voice of Victory gains a lot of value. Favor hands that pressure early and keep deploying over hands that spend a turn setting up a single big play.
- Jund Sacrifice: Expect a grind. Keep hands with ways to get creatures back, such as Moseo, Vein's New Dean and Case of the Uneaten Feast, or hands with steady card flow. A hand that dumps its creatures and runs out of cards is weaker here.
After sideboarding, Deep-Cavern Bat slots into your curve as a two-drop with lifelink. Count it as an enabler-plus-disruption piece when you evaluate a seven.
Sequencing & Key Lines
Land Sequencing Comes First
Your mana base has timing restrictions, so sequence lands before spells. Starting Town only enters untapped on your first three turns, and Concealed Courtyard only enters untapped while you control two or fewer other lands. Spend turns one through three on those. Save Godless Shrine, Multiversal Passage and basics for turn four onward, where paying 2 life is the only way to get an untapped land. Bleachbone Verge needs a Plains or Swamp to tap for white, so name Plains or Swamp on Multiversal Passage when Verge is in your hand.
The Standard Opening
- Turn 1: Play an enabler: Hinterland Sanctifier, Liliana the Faultless or Aunt May. A creature puts pressure on the board immediately. Lead with Case of the Uneaten Feast instead when you expect early creature removal, because the Case keeps triggering after your creatures die.
- Turn 2: Play Amalia Benavides Aguirre off the enabler. Amalia entering triggers the enabler, and she is already on the battlefield when that trigger resolves, so she explores right away. With no Amalia, play Enlightened Confidant, or cast two one-drops. Always put the enabler down before the second creature.
- Turn 3: Moseo, Vein's New Dean is your best turn-three play. Moseo and the Pest token are two separate creatures entering, so every enabler triggers twice. That sets up an Infusion return at end step. Haliya, Guided by Light is the other strong option, because it gains life when it enters and when each later creature enters.
Ordering Inside a Turn
Every enabler trigger is its own life-gain event. Payoffs count events, not life totals: Amalia Benavides Aguirre explores on each one, Leonardo, Cutting Edge and Essence Channeler add a counter for each, Starscape Cleric drains for each, and Ajani Resolute gains loyalty for each. Payoffs only count events that happen after they are on the battlefield. That gives you the rule for every turn:
- Cast payoffs and enablers first. Cast the creatures that simply enter last.
- Cast Ajani Resolute before the rest of your creatures that turn. Every creature you add afterward then adds loyalty. Ajani's 0 is a life-gain event of its own, so use it after your payoffs are down.
- Ajani's −4 token and Starscape Cleric's Offspring copy are both creatures entering, so each one triggers your enablers again.
Stacking the End Step
Most of your value happens at end step, and you choose the order of your own simultaneous triggers. Put Lunar Convocation's Bat trigger and Moseo, Vein's New Dean's Infusion on top so they resolve first. Put Haliya, Guided by Light and Enlightened Confidant at the bottom.
This order matters because of how the cards are worded:
- Haliya's draw checks whether you've gained 3 or more life when the trigger resolves, not when it triggers.
- Confidant compares the surveiled card's mana value to your life gained at resolution.
- The Bat and any creature Moseo returns both enter before those checks, so their enabler triggers add to your total.
One exception: Moseo chooses its target when the trigger goes on the stack. Make sure you have gained enough life before your end step to reach the creature you want back.
Use the Warp cost on Haliya, Guided by Light when you have mana to spare. Warped Haliya still gains its enter life. Its draw trigger still happens at the same end step that exiles it, because the draw does not need Haliya to stay on the battlefield. You can then cast Haliya again from exile on a later turn, and it triggers your enablers again.
Losing Life on Purpose
Lunar Convocation only makes a Bat if you both gained and lost life that turn. Essence Channeler only flies after you've lost life that turn. Plan your life payments around that:
- Pay for Godless Shrine or Multiversal Passage on turns when Convocation is out.
- Tap Starting Town for colored mana, which costs 1 life, before combat if Channeler is attacking.
- If nothing else costs life that turn, activate Convocation's draw ability, which costs 2 life. You get a card and the Bat.
Combat Edges
Use Leonardo, Cutting Edge's Sneak to return an unblocked creature that has a good enter effect:
- Moseo, Vein's New Dean gives you a second Pest when you recast it.
- Haliya, Guided by Light gains life again on entry.
Leonardo enters tapped and attacking, which triggers your enablers mid-combat. His lifelink damage is one more life-gain event. Attack with Moseo's Pest whenever it is safe, because its attack trigger gains you life.
Playing Around Interaction
Voice of Victory is your main tool against opponents who hold up instant-speed answers. Resolve it before your other key spells on the same turn. Its ability does nothing while it is still on the stack. Once it is on the battlefield, your opponent cannot respond to anything else you cast that turn. Any removal they have must then come on their own turn.
That is when Liliana the Faultless protects you. Leave her untapped with {1} open on the opponent's turn. Her hexproof ability is an activated ability, so you can use it in response to targeted removal. Also remember that Amalia Benavides Aguirre's ward makes the opponent pay 3 life to target her, which adds up quickly against aggressive decks.
Edict effects need their own plan. Strategic Betrayal appears in the main deck of 19 of 23 Dimir Aggro Top 8 lists (source: MTGTop8 deck exports, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). Your opponent chooses which creature you exile, and it also exiles your entire graveyard. Defend against it in three ways:
- Keep a cheap creature, such as a Pest, a Bat or a one-drop enabler, on the battlefield as fodder.
- Use Moseo's Infusion and a solved Case of the Uneaten Feast on your own turn, before your graveyard is exposed.
- Don't fill the graveyard with Amalia's explores if your plan is to cast those cards later with the Case.
Amalia at 20
Amalia's explores are mandatory. When she reveals a nonland card, she gets the +1/+1 counter whether you put the card back or into the graveyard. Once her power is in the high teens, count every life-gain event left in your turn before you act. If her power hits exactly 20, she destroys all other creatures, including yours.
- Against go-wide boards: plan the wipe deliberately, then rebuild with Moseo or the Case.
- Otherwise: stop gaining life at 19, or push Amalia past 20 in a single turn.
Make explore choices with the next turn in mind. Put spells back when Enlightened Confidant can surveil them into your hand. Send creatures to the graveyard when Moseo or the Case can bring them back.
Matchup Matrix
Dimir Aggro, Izzet Spellementals and Dimir Control took the most Top 8 slots, with 23, 22 and 21 of 200 (source: MTGTop8, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). Jund Sacrifice, the mirror and UW Control follow. Expect to face all six in a Swiss bracket of any size.

Dimir Aggro: Even
Strategic Betrayal appears in the main deck of 19 of 23 Dimir Aggro Top 8 lists and the sideboard of 22 (source: MTGTop8 deck exports, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). It makes you exile a creature of your choice and your entire graveyard.
- Why your protection fails: it targets you, not your creature. Amalia Benavides Aguirre's ward never triggers, and Liliana the Faultless's hexproof does nothing.
- Keep fodder on board: always have a Pest or Bat token available to exile.
- Don't bank graveyard value: cash in Case of the Uneaten Feast the turn it is solved. Don't count on Moseo, Vein's New Dean returning creatures across multiple turns.
- Move their interaction: Voice of Victory stops them from casting spells during your turn, so all their instant-speed plays happen on their turn instead.
- How you win: Lunar Convocation and Starscape Cleric drains close the race.
Izzet Spellementals: Favored
This is a spells deck, which makes Voice of Victory your best card. Lead with it whenever you can.
- Go wide: Hinterland Sanctifier, Haliya, Guided by Light and Case of the Uneaten Feast stack a trigger on every creature you cast. Answers that remove one card at a time fall behind quickly.
- Life is a resource: every point you gain undoes their damage.
- Use Erode carefully: it hands them a basic land, so save it for a creature that actually races you.
Dimir Control and UW Control: Favored
- Don't overextend: commit two or three threats, never your whole hand.
- Diversify threats: Ajani Resolute and Lunar Convocation are noncreature engines. Ajani's 0 ability gains life every turn, which explores Amalia Benavides Aguirre, pings with Starscape Cleric and turns on Convocation's drain.
- Refill: Convocation's draw ability keeps cards coming.
- Rebuild after a sweep: a solved Case of the Uneaten Feast lets you recast your dead creatures. Moseo, Vein's New Dean returns one more.
- Protect key creatures: on their turn, hold Liliana the Faultless up to give a creature hexproof in response to targeted removal. Cast Voice of Victory before you commit on your own turn.
Jund Sacrifice: Even
Their fodder clogs the ground, so win through the air and the end step.
- Evasion and drain: Starscape Cleric flies and pings whenever you gain life. Lunar Convocation drains past any blocker.
- Grow Amalia: in long stalls, each life-gain trigger explores Amalia Benavides Aguirre. At exactly 20 power she destroys every other creature, including yours.
- Time the wipe: set it up when you have Case or Moseo ready to rebuild. Alternatively, ride Ajani Resolute to its emblem.
Orzhov Aggro Mirror: Even
- Kill the engines: spend Erode on Amalia or Haliya, not on a 1/2.
- Ward has an upside: paying 3 life to target their Amalia means you both gained and lost life that turn, which makes a Bat with your Lunar Convocation.
- Lock out their removal: Voice of Victory stops them from Eroding your Amalia on your turn.
- Watch their Amalia: track its power every turn. If it reaches exactly 20, your board is gone.
Big-Creature Green Aggro: Unfavored
Your 2/1s and 1/2s don't block their threats well. Erode also hands them a land they're happy to take.
- Stay alive: chump with tokens and gain life every turn.
- Race in the air: attack with Moseo, Vein's New Dean, Starscape Cleric and Bat tokens.
- Erode only the lethal threat: save it for the creature that would actually kill you.
- Add a blocker: Ajani Resolute's Pridemate grows into one that can hold the ground.
Graveyard Combo: Even
Game one is a race; go under them. After sideboarding, two cards swing it:
- Strategic Betrayal exiles their entire graveyard.
- Deep-Cavern Bat strips a key nonland card from their hand.
Voice of Victory also keeps them from responding during your turn.
Other Aggro and Tempo: Even
Smaller aggressive decks lose value as your incidental life gain piles up. Spend Erode early on their best attacker, keep Hinterland Sanctifier and Aunt May alive to buffer your life total, and let your drain triggers take over the race.
Sideboard / Tech Guide
Every sideboard card here does one of two jobs. Some fight decks that try to go over the top of you: Deep-Cavern Bat, Decorum Dissertation, Professor Dellian Fel and the extra drain pieces. Others fight decks that try to go under or around you: Seam Rip, Curious Farm Animals, the extra Erode and Strategic Betrayal. Identify which kind of matchup you're in, then board accordingly.
| Opponent | In | Out |
|---|---|---|
| Dimir Aggro | 3 Seam Rip, 1 Erode, 1 Curious Farm Animals | 2 Starscape Cleric, 1 Lunar Convocation, 1 Aunt May, 1 Leonardo, Cutting Edge |
| Izzet Spellementals | 2 Deep-Cavern Bat, 1 Starscape Cleric | 1 Aunt May, 1 Essence Channeler, 1 Erode |
| Dimir / UW / 4-5C Control | 2 Deep-Cavern Bat, 1 Starscape Cleric, 1 Lunar Convocation, 1 Decorum Dissertation, 1 Professor Dellian Fel | 2 Erode, 2 Hinterland Sanctifier, 1 Aunt May, 1 Essence Channeler |
| Jund Sacrifice | 3 Seam Rip, 1 Erode | 2 Voice of Victory, 1 Aunt May, 1 Hinterland Sanctifier |
| Mono Green Aggro | 3 Seam Rip, 2 Curious Farm Animals, 1 Erode | 2 Starscape Cleric, 2 Lunar Convocation, 1 Leonardo, Cutting Edge, 1 Ajani Resolute |
| Graveyard combo (Superior Reanimator, Superior Doomsday) | 3 Strategic Betrayal, 2 Deep-Cavern Bat | 2 Ajani Resolute, 1 Aunt May, 1 Essence Channeler, 1 Lunar Convocation |
Dimir Aggro
This is a board fight, so creatures that can't block are the first cuts. Seam Rip answers anything with mana value 2 or less. The extra Erode is instant speed and hits planeswalkers as well as creatures.
Expect them to have Strategic Betrayal after board: it appears in 22 of the 23 Dimir Aggro Top 8 sideboards (source: MTGTop8 deck exports, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18).
- It targets you, not your creature, so Liliana the Faultless can't protect anything from it.
- It also exiles your graveyard, which strips targets from Moseo, Vein's New Dean and the solved Case of the Uneaten Feast.
- Keep a low-value creature on the battlefield beside Amalia Benavides Aguirre whenever you can.
Izzet Spellementals
Voice of Victory stays in every game. Your opponents can't cast spells during your turn, which shuts off their instant-speed interaction while you attack.
- Deep-Cavern Bat takes their best card from their hand before it matters.
- The fourth Starscape Cleric adds evasive drain damage.
- Keep one Erode for the threat you can't race.
- Keep Liliana the Faultless. Granting hexproof answers targeted burn, and 21 of 22 Spellementals Top 8 lists run Burst Lightning (source: MTGTop8 deck exports, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18).
Control
Against control, you trade cheap bodies for threats that generate card advantage. Erode has few good targets here and hands them a free land, so cut both copies.
Professor Dellian Fel costs {2}{B}{G}. Your green comes from two sources:
- Starting Town, by paying 1 life.
- Multiversal Passage entering as a Forest. A Forest Passage no longer taps for white or black, so only name Forest when the Professor is in your hand.
Decorum Dissertation targets any player, so aim it at yourself. The 2 life you lose combines with any lifegain that turn to complete the "gained and lost" clause on Lunar Convocation, which makes a Bat. Paradigm then gives you a free copy at the start of each of your first main phases. That's a draw engine control can't counter twice.
If their win conditions are few and hard to target, swap Strategic Betrayal in for one Deep-Cavern Bat.
Jund Sacrifice
Voice of Victory stops spells only. It does nothing against activated abilities, so it loses most of its value against a deck built on sacrifice outlets. Edicts are poor against decks that can feed them fodder, so Strategic Betrayal stays in the sideboard.
Seam Rip exiles rather than destroys, which matters against a deck that wants its permanents to die.
If their build leans on artifacts or enchantments, swap one Seam Rip for Curious Farm Animals.
Mono Green Aggro
Here you need blockers and life, not reach.
- Curious Farm Animals chump-blocks, and when it dies you gain 3 life. That lifegain triggers Amalia Benavides Aguirre explores, the Moseo, Vein's New Dean Infusion and progress on the Case of the Uneaten Feast solve.
- Starscape Cleric can't block, so it comes out.
- Two copies of Lunar Convocation and Ajani Resolute come out because they are too slow when you're under pressure.
- Skip Strategic Betrayal. With several green creatures on their board, they will exile their worst one.
Graveyard combo
Strategic Betrayal is the key card in this matchup. One sorcery removes a creature and exiles their entire graveyard.
- Cast it before they set up, not after a creature has already been reanimated.
- Deep-Cavern Bat lets you check their hand first and exile their key nonland card.
- Keep both Erode. Instant-speed removal answers a reanimated creature before it attacks.
- Voice of Victory keeps them from casting anything during your turn.
The Orzhov Mirror
For the mirror, bring in 3 Seam Rip, 1 Erode and 1 Curious Farm Animals. Take out 1 Aunt May, 1 Essence Channeler, 1 Leonardo, Cutting Edge and 2 Starscape Cleric.
- Seam Rip can exile an opposing Amalia Benavides Aguirre, but ward still applies, so budget the 3 life.
- Curious Farm Animals can destroy their Seam Rip to get your exiled card back. It also destroys their Case of the Uneaten Feast or Lunar Convocation.
- Control of the graveyard decides late games, so Strategic Betrayal is a reasonable fifth card in place of Curious Farm Animals.
Tuning for Your Field
If your local scene is heavy on control, swap a Seam Rip for a second Decorum Dissertation. If it's mostly creature decks, the opposite swap is correct.
Watch the Strategic Betrayal count. Three copies are only justified while graveyard combo and lean-threat control decks are in the room. If they disappear, those slots should go to another Curious Farm Animals or Deep-Cavern Bat.
Tech Choices & Variations
The engine is fixed: Hinterland Sanctifier, Amalia Benavides Aguirre, Enlightened Confidant, Case of the Uneaten Feast, Haliya, Guided by Light and Moseo, Vein's New Dean are the deck. Cut into those and you are playing a different archetype. The real flexibility lives in about a dozen slots: the removal count, the reach cards, the one-of creatures and the support planeswalkers.
The Flex Slots and Their Swaps
| Slot | Swap Option | Gain | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2x Erode | 3rd Erode or Seam Rip | More answers to early threats | Erode hands the opponent a basic. Seam Rip only hits mana value 2 or less and dies to enchantment removal |
| 2x Starscape Cleric | 3rd copy, or Deep-Cavern Bat | Evasive drain or hand disruption | Cleric can't block. Bat is a 1/1 that gives the card back when it leaves |
| 3x Lunar Convocation | 4th copy | More inevitability and card flow | Does nothing to the board when you are behind |
| 1x Aunt May | Curious Farm Animals | A 3-life burst and an answer to artifacts and enchantments | You lose a body that pings on every later creature |
| 1x Leonardo, Cutting Edge | Essence Channeler #2 | A more reliable evasive threat | You lose lifelink, which is a gain trigger that doesn't need another creature |
| 2x Ajani Resolute | Deep-Cavern Bat | A cheaper interactive body | You lose the guaranteed once-a-turn life gain from the 0 |
Main-Deck Swaps That Actually Change Games
- Curious Farm Animals over Aunt May. Aunt May's Spider clause is blank in this list. She is a third copy of the Hinterland Sanctifier trigger and nothing more. Curious Farm Animals trades that repeatable ping for a one-shot 3 life. If you pay {2} and sacrifice it on your turn, that 3 life alone meets Haliya, Guided by Light's draw threshold. Add any creature entering and you reach Case of the Uneaten Feast's solve condition. It also lets Moseo, Vein's New Dean return it at end step, because its mana value is 1. Make this swap when you expect artifact or enchantment threats.
- Erode count. The basic land Erode gives away barely matters against aggro, which is already curving out. Against control, which wants to reach its expensive spells, that land is a real gift. Play three against creature-heavy fields and two or fewer against draw-go fields.
- Ajani Resolute stays in. Its 0 ability is a life-gain trigger that needs no creature. It turns on Enlightened Confidant's surveil, Moseo, Vein's New Dean's Infusion and Lunar Convocation after a board wipe. Only cut it if your field is so fast that a 2-loyalty walker never survives a turn.
- Voice of Victory. Your opponents can't cast spells during your turn. That turns off instant-speed removal and counters while your end-step triggers resolve. Two copies are right for an interactive field. Against pure creature decks it is a 1/3 that blocks well, so it is rarely dead.
The Professor Dellian Fel Question
Professor Dellian Fel costs {2}{B}{G}. The list's only possible green sources are Starting Town (pay 1 life) and Multiversal Passage (name Forest). If you plan to board it in, think about the Passage name before the card is in hand. A Passage named Forest isn't a Plains or Swamp, so it can't turn on Bleachbone Verge's white mode. The payoff is worth the work in grindy games. The +2 is a 3-life gain trigger every turn. The −3 is removal. The −6 emblem turns every gain trigger into direct damage. Don't stretch for it against aggro.
Tuning for the Expected Field
The four archetypes with the most Top 8 slots were Dimir Aggro (23 of 200), Izzet Spellementals (22), Dimir Control (21) and Jund Sacrifice (16) (source: MTGTop8, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). Orzhov Aggro also took 16 slots, so prepare for the mirror (source: MTGTop8, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18).
- Control-heavy locals: Move the 4th Lunar Convocation and the 3rd Starscape Cleric into the main deck. Cut an Erode and Aunt May. Keep both Voice of Victory. Decorum Dissertation is a five-mana card-advantage engine through Paradigm. Treat it as sideboard-only against the slowest decks, and remember the 2 life loss can target you.
- Creature-heavy locals: Bring in the 3rd Erode and Seam Rip. Trim Starscape Cleric, because a creature that can't block is a liability in a race. Keep Lunar Convocation at three, since paying 2 life to draw is a real cost when you are under pressure.
- Graveyard decks: Superior Reanimator took 6 Top 8 slots (source: MTGTop8, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). If your store has one, Strategic Betrayal exiles their whole graveyard along with a creature. Because it targets the player, it also gets around hexproof and ward.
- Mirror-heavy locals: Seam Rip hits the opposing Amalia Benavides Aguirre, Case of the Uneaten Feast and every two-drop. Liliana the Faultless protecting your own Amalia Benavides Aguirre from removal becomes more valuable than usual.
Mana Notes
The 22 lands include only five basics. That keeps Bleachbone Verge reliable and gives Erode's symmetry nothing to exploit against you. If you add Professor Dellian Fel to the main deck, don't add a Forest. Use Multiversal Passage instead, so you never draw a land that can't cast Amalia Benavides Aguirre on turn two.
Budget Options
The full list runs about $273 at TCGplayer market prices. That figure is approximate. Check current prices for each card before you buy, because the ranking below rests on rarity and copy count, not on quoted prices.
Where the Money Likely Sits
The cost probably sits in two places:
- The nonbasic mana base. There are 16 nonbasic lands, all played as four-ofs except one: Concealed Courtyard, Godless Shrine, Starting Town, Multiversal Passage and a single Bleachbone Verge.
- The four-of rares and legendaries. This means Amalia Benavides Aguirre and Case of the Uneaten Feast, plus the three-ofs like Haliya, Guided by Light and Moseo, Vein's New Dean.
Sort your cart by price. Then use the trade-offs below to decide what to cut, rather than cutting whatever is most expensive.
Never Cut
Amalia Benavides Aguirre and Case of the Uneaten Feast are the two cards nothing else in the list replicates.
- Amalia has Ward—Pay 3 life and explores on every life-gain event. She is your sticky, growing threat.
- Case is a one-mana trigger source that turns into a graveyard-casting refuel once you gain 5 life in a turn.
If you can't afford these, you aren't playing this deck. Buy them first.
Budget Swap 1: Basics for Duals
This is the biggest saving with the smallest drop in power. The deck is two colors and mostly white. Its black demands are Amalia Benavides Aguirre, Lunar Convocation, Starscape Cleric and Moseo, Vein's New Dean.
A reasonable budget base looks like this:
- Keep the 4 Plains and 1 Swamp.
- Keep Bleachbone Verge. Its {W} side needs a Plains or Swamp, so it actually gets more reliable as you add basics.
- Replace whichever dual is priciest for you with basics, roughly 3 Plains for every 2 Swamp.
Here is what each swap costs you:
- Cutting Concealed Courtyard hurts most. It is an untapped two-color land on turns 1–3, exactly when you deploy your one-drops. Keep it as long as you can.
- Cutting Godless Shrine or Multiversal Passage costs you untapped dual mana on demand. Both cost 2 life to enter untapped.
- Cutting Starting Town costs you any-color mana on your first three turns. After that it taps for colorless or charges 1 life per colored mana.
Basics also cost you something less obvious: the self-inflicted life loss. Shrine, Passage and Town are how you lose life on purpose. That loss turns on the bat-token half of Lunar Convocation (gained and lost life this turn). It also gives Essence Channeler flying and vigilance. A basics-heavy build makes fewer bats and grounds Channeler more often. The flip side is that you take less self-damage against aggro.
One knock-on effect: cut Professor Dellian Fel from a budget sideboard. At {2}{B}{G}, its only green sources in this list are Starting Town and a Multiversal Passage named Forest. Without those lands you can't cast it.
Budget Swap 2: Use the List's Own Redundancy
The creature suite is built from overlapping parts. If one piece is expensive, shift copies to a sibling already in the list.
| Role | Interchangeable cards | What you lose by swapping |
|---|---|---|
| Cheap "creature enters, gain 1" triggers | Hinterland Sanctifier, Aunt May, Liliana the Faultless | Liliana's discard-for-hexproof protection; Sanctifier's 1 power over Aunt May's 0/2 body |
| Three-mana engine | Haliya, Guided by Light, Moseo, Vein's New Dean | Haliya's end-step card draw (needs 3+ life gained) vs. Moseo's flying body, Pest and graveyard recursion |
| Lifegain payoffs | Starscape Cleric, Essence Channeler, Leonardo, Cutting Edge, Ajani Resolute | Cleric's direct drain and evasion; Ajani's token-making and loyalty growth |
Two cards have no in-list substitute: Voice of Victory and Enlightened Confidant.
- Voice's "opponents can't cast spells during your turn" is your only protection against instant-speed interaction during combat.
- Confidant is lifelink plus card selection.
Keep both if you can. If you must cut one, you can replace a Confidant with any cheap creature from outside the list that gains life or carries lifelink. Just accept that you lose the surveil-to-hand card flow.
Budget Sideboard
Build the sideboard last. The cheapest place to start is the cards that are extra copies of main-deck cards you already own: the third Starscape Cleric, third Erode and fourth Lunar Convocation.
After those, add the cheap interaction in this order:
- Seam Rip answers any opposing nonland permanent with mana value 2 or less.
- Strategic Betrayal handles a creature and exiles the opponent's graveyard.
- Curious Farm Animals can destroy an artifact or enchantment.
These matter here because Dimir Aggro and Izzet Spellementals took the most Top 8 slots in recent large Standard events (source: MTGTop8, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). Your early interaction needs to be in place before your luxury tech.
Upgrade Path
- Core engine: 4 Amalia Benavides Aguirre, 4 Case of the Uneaten Feast, 4 Enlightened Confidant, 4 Hinterland Sanctifier.
- Three-drops and payoffs: Haliya, Guided by Light, Moseo, Vein's New Dean, Lunar Convocation, Ajani Resolute.
- First lands: Concealed Courtyard, for untapped early duals.
- Remaining lands: Godless Shrine, then Starting Town and Multiversal Passage. These restore the deliberate life loss that powers your bat tokens and Channeler's flying.
- Sideboard finish: Deep-Cavern Bat, Decorum Dissertation, and Professor Dellian Fel once your mana can support green.
Common Mistakes
Most of this deck's lost games come from miscounting triggers, not from the opponent. Each "whenever you gain life" and "whenever a creature enters" event resolves separately, and the deck rewards precise counting while punishing autopilot.
1. Accidentally wiping your own board with Amalia
Amalia Benavides Aguirre checks her power after every explore. If it is exactly 20, every other creature dies, including yours. A turn with five or six separate lifegain triggers can walk her from 16 to 20 partway through the stack. The explore isn't optional, so the only brake is not triggering it. Hold the extra creature, skip the Ajani Resolute 0, or attack before deploying more. Two other things can push her to 20:
- The Ajani emblem adds +2 to her power.
- When Essence Channeler dies, its counters can land on her.
Use the wipe on purpose against go-wide boards when Amalia is your only threat that matters. Never stumble into it.
2. Casting payoffs before the trigger sources
Hinterland Sanctifier, Aunt May, Liliana the Faultless, Haliya, Guided by Light and Case of the Uneaten Feast all care about creatures entering after them. On a two-spell turn, the enabler goes first and the creature second. Casting Starscape Cleric before Sanctifier throws away a drain, an Amalia explore, a Leonardo, Cutting Edge counter and an Ajani loyalty. In a deck built on stacking small triggers, sequencing order is damage.
3. Losing count of life gained this turn
Your end step runs on thresholds, and you should know your number before you pass to it. The key numbers are:
- Haliya: draws at 3 or more life gained.
- Case of the Uneaten Feast: solves at 5 or more.
- Enlightened Confidant: returns the surveilled card only if its mana value is at or below your total.
- Moseo, Vein's New Dean: returns a creature with mana value at or below your total.
A common error is stopping one life short. Firing the Ajani 0 or connecting with a lifelinker turns 2 into 3 or 4 into 5. Count after combat, before your second main phase. That is when you still have mana and spells to close the gap.
4. Ignoring the "lost life" half of the deck
Lunar Convocation only makes a Bat if you both gained and lost life. Essence Channeler only flies if you've lost life this turn. Your mana base gives you free ways to lose life:
- Tap Starting Town for colored mana and pay 1 life.
- Untap Godless Shrine or Multiversal Passage by paying 2 life.
- Use the Lunar Convocation draw ability.
Tapping Starting Town for colorless when a Convocation is out wastes a 1/1 flier. The reverse also holds. Against aggressive decks, every point of life you pay is a point you have to gain back. Take the tapped land when the tempo doesn't matter.
5. Casting Voice of Victory last
Voice of Victory stops opponents from casting spells during your turn. That only helps for spells cast after it resolves. Against counterspell decks, land it first, then deploy the rest of your turn safely. Instant-speed removal is shut off for your whole turn too, combat included. Its Mobilize tokens also count as creatures entering, so each attack feeds Sanctifier, Aunt May, Liliana, Haliya and Case before blockers are declared. Know how many triggers the attack makes before you swing.
6. Treating ward as protection
Amalia's "pay 3 life" ward taxes spells that target her. It does nothing against effects that target the player or don't target at all. Strategic Betrayal targets you, so ward never triggers. It also exiles your graveyard, which strips Moseo and Case of their targets. Strategic Betrayal shows up in the main deck of most Dimir Aggro Top 8 lists and in nearly all of their sideboards (source: MTGTop8 deck exports, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). Against that deck, keep a cheap creature beside Amalia so the edict has a worse choice. Don't dump your graveyard plan into an obvious exile turn.
7. Wasting Case and explore graveyard value
When Amalia explores a nonland, you choose whether it goes back or into the graveyard. Defaulting to "back" is often wrong. A creature card in the graveyard is a Moseo target or a Case recast, and Confidant's surveil can dig past dead draws. Don't crack a solved Case without the mana to recast at least one creature that turn, since the permission ends at end of turn. Also remember that while Case stays on the battlefield, it keeps gaining you life on every creature entry. Sacrificing it for one cheap recast often costs you more triggers than it earns.
Tournament Prep & Final Notes
What to Practice
Your losses with this list will come from misplayed trigger turns more than from bad draws. Before the event, goldfish the deck until you can count a turn's total life gained before you cast anything. Every end-step payoff keys off that number: Haliya, Guided by Light draws at 3, Case of the Uneaten Feast solves at 5, and Moseo, Vein's New Dean and Enlightened Confidant scale with it directly.
Spend your matchup reps on the decks with the most Top 8 slots: Dimir Aggro (23 of 200), Izzet Spellementals (22), Dimir Control (21), and Jund Sacrifice (16 slots and the most wins of any archetype, 4) (source: MTGTop8, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). Orzhov Aggro also took 16 slots in that window (source: MTGTop8, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18), so prepare a mirror plan instead of hoping to dodge it. The 2026-10-12 Banned and Restricted announcement made no changes to Standard, and the next one is scheduled for 2026-11-30 (source: Wizards of the Coast, 2026-10-12). Your prep stays valid until then.
Practice sideboarding against a timer as well. You have nine distinct sideboard cards, and you should know your swaps for those four archetypes cold. Don't work them out while your opponent waits.
Rules Interactions to Know Cold
- Each life-gain trigger is its own event. One creature entering with Hinterland Sanctifier, Liliana the Faultless, and Case of the Uneaten Feast out gives you three separate gains. That means three explores on Amalia Benavides Aguirre, three counters on Leonardo, Cutting Edge, three loyalty on Ajani Resolute, and three drains from Starscape Cleric.
- Mobilize tokens are creatures entering. When Voice of Victory attacks, its two Warriors each trigger every "creature enters" lifegain source you control. During your turn your opponent can't cast spells, so those triggers resolve without instant-speed interference.
- Feed Leonardo a doomed token. Sneak returns an unblocked attacker during the declare blockers step. A mobilize Warrior that would be sacrificed at end step anyway is the cheapest thing to return. Leonardo, Cutting Edge then enters tapped and attacking, which triggers your lifegain sources again.
- Amalia's wipe is not optional. After each explore, if her power is exactly 20, all other creatures are destroyed, including yours. A nonland reveal always adds the counter. Your only choice is whether the card stays on top or goes to the graveyard. Count her power before you stack triggers. When you're behind on board, steer toward exactly 20 on purpose.
- Case solves only at your end step. The solved ability gives graveyard casting only until end of turn, and creatures are cast at sorcery speed. Plan to sacrifice Case of the Uneaten Feast in a main phase on a later turn, with mana left to recast the creatures.
- Losing life is a resource. Starting Town, Godless Shrine, Multiversal Passage, and the draw ability on Lunar Convocation all cost life. Losing life turns on Essence Channeler's flying and vigilance, and combined with gaining life it makes Lunar Convocation create a Bat. Pay the life deliberately when it enables those.
- Order your end-step triggers. Haliya, Guided by Light's draw, the warp exile, Moseo, Vein's New Dean, Enlightened Confidant, and Lunar Convocation all trigger at the beginning of your end step, and you choose their order. Moseo picks its target when its trigger goes on the stack. A creature that Confidant surveils into the graveyard that same end step can't be Moseo's target until your next turn.
- Erode gives your opponent a basic land. Fire it early, when the extra land matters least. Late in the game, when you're racing, the land is a small cost.
Clock and Bookkeeping
The deck is not slow, but its big turns are long. Track life gained per turn on your scorepad, separately from your life total. Use a die for Ajani Resolute loyalty and keep Amalia's counter count visible to both players. When a creature enters, announce your triggers as a batch, such as "Sanctifier, Liliana, Case: three life, three explores," instead of resolving them silently. This keeps you from missing a trigger, and it keeps judge calls from eating your round. If you are ahead on board late in a round, close the game on that turn instead of setting up one more value end step.
Final Assessment
This list layers enough lifegain sources that a single creature entering can trigger several payoffs at once. It then turns that life into cards with Haliya, Guided by Light, Enlightened Confidant, and Lunar Convocation, and into recursion with Moseo, Vein's New Dean and Case of the Uneaten Feast. That depth of card advantage is uncommon for an aggro deck. Its weakness is the flip side: the engine pieces are small creatures, so your opening hands need enough of them to keep the engine running after the first removal spell. The list made Top 4 of a 44-player Champions Cup Premium Qualifier, and it rewards the player who counts precisely. Learn the trigger math, prepare for the four archetypes above, and you are registering a deck that can win the event.
