Archetype Overview
Pinnacle Affinity is a blue-based artifact aggro deck. It wins by dumping cheap artifacts and turning each one into extra value. Underneath the Affinity name, it plays like an engine deck. Sixteen artifacts cost zero (Mox Opal, Mox Amber, Mishra's Bauble, Tormod's Crypt, Welding Jar), and four more (Engineered Explosives) can be cast for zero. Almost every other card in the list gets better each time one of those hits the table. This build took 1st Place at MTGO Challenge 64 on 2026-10-21, a 72-player field, played by MTGO user sioutis_kk.
The Plan
You build an artifact count fast, then cash it in. Three payoffs do most of the work:
- Pinnacle Emissary makes a 1/1 flying Drone every time you cast an artifact spell. A zero-mana Bauble becomes a free flier, and that flier is itself an artifact. That feeds metalcraft, improvise, affinity, and Construct size. Its Warp cost is a single hybrid mana, so on a turn when you chain several artifacts you can deploy it for one blue and collect a burst of Drones. It gets exiled at end of turn, and you can hard-cast it from exile later.
- Kappa Cannoneer grows a counter whenever it or another artifact you control enters, and it can't be blocked that turn. Improvise lets you tap your Moxen, Baubles, and Drones to pay for it, so a six-mana threat often costs one or two real mana. Ward 4 means most removal costs the opponent their whole turn.
- Urza's Saga makes Constructs that scale with your artifact count. Its third chapter tutors any {0} or {1} artifact straight onto the battlefield, including Shadowspear, Skateboard, Pithing Needle, Mox Opal, or Tormod's Crypt. All of these are one-of or utility slots that you can find on demand.
Why the Engine Is Strong
The card that ties the deck together is Emry, Lurker of the Loch. Affinity for artifacts often makes her free by turn two. Her enter trigger mills four, which fills your graveyard with artifacts. Her tap ability lets you recast an artifact from the graveyard each turn. Pair her with Mishra's Bauble and you get a repeatable loop: every turn you recast a zero-mana artifact that cantrips. Each cast then pays off your other cards:
- It makes a Drone with Pinnacle Emissary out.
- It puts a counter on Kappa Cannoneer and makes it unblockable.
- It draws a card and makes Basim Ibn Ishaq unblockable, because artifacts are historic.
Tormod's Crypt and Welding Jar loop the same way. With Emry, you can rebuy graveyard hate or protection every turn.
Basim Ibn Ishaq is the deck's card-advantage valve. Your zero-drops trigger him constantly, so he draws a card each turn and connects unblocked, growing as he goes. He and Emry are also the legendary creatures that turn on Mox Amber. That's why Amber appears as a two-of here rather than as a staple.
The redundancy matters as much as the power. Most of your threats ask a different question:
- Kappa Cannoneer dodges spot removal.
- The Drones and Constructs go wide.
- Basim Ibn Ishaq attacks from an unblockable angle.
- Shadowspear adds trample and lifelink, and it can strip hexproof and indestructible from the opponent's permanents.
- Skateboard gives a fresh Cannoneer or Construct haste and taps down a blocker or a land on entry.
The Interactive Shell
This is not a goldfish deck. Metallic Rebuke uses improvise, so it often costs you one mana or none. You can keep it up while still developing, and the tax of three is steep against opponents who tap out early. Engineered Explosives is a flexible sweeper:
- Cast it for zero and it clears tokens.
- Cast it with blue, black, and red mana and it hits the two- and three-drops that matter.
Your own key pieces sit at awkward mana values, so you can set the counters to dodge your board. Main-deck Tormod's Crypt and Pithing Needle give you game against graveyard decks and activated abilities in game one. Both are also free artifact triggers for your payoffs.
The sideboard pushes you toward Grixis disruption. Thoughtseize and Fatal Push lean on the black sources. Consign to Memory and Strix Serenade are cheap counters. Grafdigger's Cage and Cursed Totem are hate pieces that cost one or two mana.
The Costs
The deck has clear weaknesses:
- Artifact hate. Opposing artifact removal and sweepers hit the whole engine at once, not one card at a time.
- Thin red. The only red sources are Steam Vents (fetchable with either fetchland) and Mox Opal. Hard-casting Pinnacle Emissary takes planning, and Warp is often your realistic way to cast it.
- Self-damage. Fetches and shocklands cost life, which adds up against aggressive starts.
- Tight lands. Seventeen lands, four of which are Sagas that sacrifice themselves, means you will sometimes keep hands that depend on your Moxen.
Who Should Play It
Pick this up if you like decisions on every turn. Ordering zero-drops around Emissary triggers, choosing when to Warp versus hard-cast, and setting Explosives counters are all skills that separate good pilots from great ones. If you enjoy aggressive starts backed by a counterspell, this deck rewards you. If you want a linear deck you can play on autopilot through a long event, this one punishes you.
At roughly $1460 on the market, it is a real investment. Moxen, Sagas, and fetchlands also carry over to other Modern artifact and blue decks, so the core holds value beyond this one list.
Core Strategy & Game Plan
Pinnacle Affinity wins by turning free artifacts into damage faster than a fair deck can answer. Every zero-mana artifact does several jobs at once. It turns on Mox Opal's metalcraft and pays for improvise. It puts a counter on Kappa Cannoneer. With Pinnacle Emissary or Basim Ibn Ishaq on the table, it also makes a body or draws a card. Your job is to turn a hand that looks like nothing into a lethal board in three or four turns, holding just enough interaction to protect the big turn.
How the deck wins
- Kappa Cannoneer is the primary closer. Whenever it or another artifact enters under your control, it gets a +1/+1 counter and can't be blocked that turn. Drones, Constructs and recast Baubles all count. Ward {4} makes single-target removal cost the opponent most of a turn. On any turn you put an artifact onto the battlefield, a resolved Cannoneer gets through for damage.
- Going wide. Urza's Saga Constructs get +1/+1 for each artifact you control, so they grow alongside the rest of the plan. Pinnacle Emissary Drones are 1/1 fliers that add to that count and chip in through the air.
- Basim Ibn Ishaq is the card-advantage clock. The first historic spell you cast each turn draws a card and makes Basim unblockable, and he grows every time he connects. Almost every nonland spell in the main deck is historic. The only exceptions are Preordain and Metallic Rebuke.
- Shadowspear and Skateboard finish the job. Shadowspear adds trample and lifelink, which helps you race and stops chump blocks against a giant Construct. Skateboard grants haste and taps a blocker when it enters.
Posture: proactive first
You are the beatdown in nearly every game one. Your interaction exists to protect your turns, not to grind.
- Metallic Rebuke costs a single blue once you have two artifacts to tap. Save it for the spell that would break your board or the one that wins the game for them.
- Engineered Explosives is your answer to go-wide boards. Its counter count is set by the colors you spend, from blue, black and red. A zero-counter Explosives also destroys your own Moxen, Baubles, Drones and Constructs, so set X with your own board in mind.
- Improvise has a hidden cost. Tapping Drones or Constructs to pay for Cannoneer or Rebuke in your main phase means those creatures don't attack this turn.
The engine
- Warp Pinnacle Emissary into free artifacts. For one mana you get Emissary for a turn. Every Mox Opal, Mox Amber, Mishra's Bauble, Tormod's Crypt and Welding Jar you cast afterward makes a Drone. The Drones stay when Emissary is exiled at end of turn, and you can cast Emissary from exile on a later turn to keep the engine running.
- Emry, Lurker of the Loch loops your zero-drops. Affinity makes her nearly free on a developed board, and her mill four can bin artifacts for her to use. Tapping her lets you recast Mishra's Bauble, Tormod's Crypt or Welding Jar from the graveyard. Each recast counts three ways: it is an artifact spell for Emissary, a historic spell for Basim, and an entering artifact for Cannoneer. Emry needs to untap before she can tap unless Skateboard gives her haste.
- Legends power Mox Amber. Emry produces blue, and Basim produces blue or black. Deploy a legend before you lean on Amber for mana.
- Urza's Saga does three jobs. Chapter I is a mana source, chapter II makes Constructs, and chapter III fetches a {0} or {1} artifact. Shadowspear, Skateboard and Pithing Needle are the usual picks. Saga puts that artifact onto the battlefield rather than casting it, so it triggers Cannoneer but not Emissary or Basim.
- Welding Jar protects your best threat. It regenerates Cannoneer or Emissary against destroy effects, and then Emry recasts it.
The ideal game, turn by turn
- Turn 1. Play Darkslick Shores untapped and warp Pinnacle Emissary. Then cast Mox Opal, Mishra's Bauble and Tormod's Crypt for three Drones. You end the turn with metalcraft live and a wide artifact count.
- Turn 2. Improvise out Kappa Cannoneer by tapping your artifacts. Alternatively, cast a nearly free Emry, Lurker of the Loch and Basim Ibn Ishaq. Play Urza's Saga if you can spare the colored mana.
- Turn 3. Recast Emissary from exile and use Emry to recast your sacrificed Bauble. Every artifact that enters pumps Cannoneer and makes it unblockable. Saga chapter II starts making Constructs.
- Turn 4. Saga chapter III fetches Shadowspear or Skateboard. Swing with an unblockable Cannoneer and a board of oversized Constructs for lethal or near-lethal.
Most games won't be this clean. Use the ideal curve as the benchmark: every decision should move your artifact count up or turn it into damage.
When the plan bends
The deck's main weakness is that so much of it costs zero. A Vexing Bauble counters any spell cast with no mana spent, which covers your Moxen, Baubles and Emry's free recasts. Vexing Bauble appeared in the main deck of 78 of 82 Broodscale Bloodchief Top 8 lists (source: MTGTop8, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18).
When you face it, shift your threat density toward cards that need mana:
- Kappa Cannoneer always requires a blue mana to cast.
- Pinnacle Emissary's warp costs one mana.
- Urza's Saga puts its artifact onto the battlefield without casting it.
Graveyard hate is the other pressure point. Grafdigger's Cage appeared in the sideboard of all 82 of those lists (source: MTGTop8, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). It stops players from casting spells from graveyards, which shuts off Emry's ability. Against it, Emry is just a cheap body, and your Cannoneer and Saga plan has to carry the game alone.
Card Choices & Breakdown
The Free Artifacts
These cards power improvise, metalcraft, Emry, Lurker of the Loch's affinity and every enter or cast trigger in the deck. Each one is a mana-free artifact you can deploy on turn one.
- Mox Opal (4): This is the acceleration that turns a fast start into a winning one. Four copies is about consistency. Because it's legendary, a second copy is dead once you have one out, but you want the first one in your opener as often as possible.
- Mishra's Bauble (4): It costs nothing, replaces itself, and counts as an artifact cast. With Emry, Lurker of the Loch you can recast it every turn, which means a Drone, a Kappa Cannoneer counter or a Basim Ibn Ishaq draw for zero mana.
- Tormod's Crypt (4): A full playset in the main deck does two jobs. It's free artifact count, and it's main-deck graveyard hate. Living End, Instant Reanimator and Rakdos Delirium all put up Top 8s (source: MTGTop8, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). Emry lets you crack it and recast it from your own graveyard.
- Welding Jar (2): It brings little on its own, so it gets only two slots. It can still regenerate a Kappa Cannoneer or a Construct-supporting artifact against destroy effects, and it costs nothing to deploy.
- Mox Amber (2): It only makes mana when you control a legendary creature. That means Emry, Lurker of the Loch or Basim Ibn Ishaq, six cards in total. Two copies is the honest ceiling. More would mean blanks in openers without a legend, while two still give you a free historic spell and artifact.
Threats and Engines
- Pinnacle Emissary (4): Every artifact spell after it lands makes a flying Drone. Each Drone is itself an artifact, so it feeds Opal, improvise, Construct size and Kappa Cannoneer counters. The warp cost of {U/R} is hybrid, so you can cast it off pure blue mana for one. That's the play on turns you chain several artifacts: you bank the Drones, it exiles at end step, and you hard-cast it later.
- Kappa Cannoneer (4): This is your top-end finisher. Improvise often lets you cast it for only the {U}. Ward {4} makes it miserable to answer at a reasonable rate. Any artifact entering grows it and makes it unblockable that turn. That includes Drones, Constructs, a recast Bauble or a Saga tutor.
- Emry, Lurker of the Loch (4): It usually costs one or zero mana. The mill four sets up targets, and the tap ability turns your graveyard of free artifacts into a recurring trigger engine. It's also a legend for Mox Amber. Run four because the deck is far stronger with it than without.
- Basim Ibn Ishaq (2): This is a two-mana card-advantage threat. It draws off any historic spell, including artifacts, Sagas and legends, and it's unblockable on any turn you trigger it. It only appears twice because it's legendary, needs black, and the draw is capped at once per turn.
Urza's Saga (4)
This is the best card in the deck and an automatic four. It's a land, a Construct factory that scales with your artifact count, and a tutor. Chapter III finds an artifact with mana cost {0} or {1}. That's why several singletons exist: they let one Saga find whichever answer or threat the game needs.
Tutor Targets
- Shadowspear (1): It gives trample and lifelink to a giant Construct or Cannoneer, which swings racing matchups. Its activated ability strips hexproof and indestructible when that matters.
- Skateboard (1): When it enters, it taps a blocker or a key permanent. It then gives haste for a {1} equip, so a fresh Construct or Pinnacle Emissary attacks immediately.
- Pithing Needle (1): This is a silver bullet against an opposing planeswalker, utility land or activated-ability engine. Mana abilities are exempt, so don't name a mana rock expecting to stop it.
Interaction
- Metallic Rebuke (4): With improvise, two tapped artifacts make it a one-mana counter. That lets you develop and still hold interaction. The {3} tax ages poorly, so it's at its best early.
- Engineered Explosives (4): This is a flexible sweeper and an artifact cast for your triggers. Your colors give you settings from zero to three: blue, black and red each add a counter, and Saga's colorless mana adds none. At two counters it hits threats like Cori-Steel Cutter. Be careful at zero, though. It destroys every mana-value-zero nonland permanent, and that includes your Baubles, Crypts, Moxen, Drones and Constructs. With Emry you can recast it from the graveyard.
Selection
Preordain (2): Two copies smooth draws toward Saga or a payoff without diluting artifact density. More would cut into the artifact count the engine needs.
Mana Base (17 lands including Saga)
- Darkslick Shores (4): It's untapped early, which is exactly when this deck plays its lands, and it covers blue and black.
- Polluted Delta (4) and Scalding Tarn (1): Both fetches can find Steam Vents or Watery Grave, since both shocks carry the Island type. That makes your red for hard-casting Pinnacle Emissary and your black for Basim Ibn Ishaq far more reliable than one copy of each suggests.
- Island (2): These are fetchable basics for life-sensitive matchups and nonbasic hate.
- Steam Vents and Watery Grave (1 each): These are your dual-colored fetch targets. Pick based on which off-color spell is in your hand.
Mox Opal covers any color once metalcraft is online, and Mox Amber adds blue or black off your legends. This keeps the splashes light enough that the deck stays blue at its core.
The Decklist
This is the exact 75 that took 1st place at MTGO Challenge 64 on 2026-10-21 (72 players), played by sioutis_kk. The estimated cost is about $1460 at TCGplayer market prices. The main deck has 14 creatures, 23 noncreature artifacts, 6 instants and sorceries, and 17 lands. Counting Kappa Cannoneer and Pinnacle Emissary, 31 of the 60 cards are artifacts. That density feeds metalcraft on Mox Opal, improvise on Kappa Cannoneer and Metallic Rebuke, and affinity on Emry, Lurker of the Loch. Rows marked "Core" are the backbone. The flexible slots get a one-line note.
Main Deck (60)
| Qty | Card | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Creatures (14) | ||
| 4 | Kappa Cannoneer | Core |
| 4 | Pinnacle Emissary | Core |
| 4 | Emry, Lurker of the Loch | Core |
| 2 | Basim Ibn Ishaq | Flex: a cheap card-draw threat that turns on Mox Amber. It is the first slot to trim for more interaction. |
| Noncreature Artifacts (23) | ||
| 4 | Mox Opal | Core |
| 4 | Mishra's Bauble | Core |
| 4 | Tormod's Crypt | Flex: a free artifact that also gives you main-deck graveyard hate. The count can drop if your room is light on graveyard decks. |
| 4 | Engineered Explosives | Core |
| 2 | Mox Amber | Flex: free mana only with Emry, Lurker of the Loch or Basim Ibn Ishaq in play. Its count moves with the legendary creature count. |
| 2 | Welding Jar | Flex: a free artifact that protects one key artifact from destruction. The second copy is cuttable. |
| 1 | Skateboard | Flex: gives haste and taps a blocker. It is also an Urza's Saga target. |
| 1 | Shadowspear | Flex: adds lifelink and trample for racing aggro. It is also an Urza's Saga target. |
| 1 | Pithing Needle | Flex: a tutorable answer to activated abilities. Name the card that beats you. |
| Instants and Sorceries (6) | ||
| 4 | Metallic Rebuke | Core |
| 2 | Preordain | Flex: smooths draws but adds nothing to your artifact count. |
| Lands (17) | ||
| 4 | Urza's Saga | Core |
| 4 | Darkslick Shores | Core |
| 4 | Polluted Delta | Core |
| 1 | Scalding Tarn | Core |
| 2 | Island | Core |
| 1 | Watery Grave | Core |
| 1 | Steam Vents | Core |
Your only red land is Steam Vents. Both Polluted Delta and Scalding Tarn can fetch it, and Mox Opal covers red once metalcraft is online. You need red only to hard-cast Pinnacle Emissary or to add a third sunburst color to Engineered Explosives. The warp cost is hybrid, so blue alone pays it. Darkslick Shores enters untapped only while you control two or fewer other lands, so play it early.
Sideboard (15)
| Qty | Card | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | Fatal Push | Cheap removal against creature decks. |
| 4 | Thoughtseize | Strips the key piece from combo and control. |
| 3 | Consign to Memory | Counters colorless spells or triggered abilities. Replicate lets one copy answer two things. |
| 1 | Strix Serenade | A one-mana counter for a single artifact, creature, or planeswalker. |
| 1 | Vexing Bauble | It also counters your own free spells: Moxen, Mishra's Bauble, and Engineered Explosives cast for zero. |
| 1 | Grafdigger's Cage | It stops you from casting spells from your graveyard with Emry, Lurker of the Loch. |
| 1 | Cursed Totem | It also shuts off the tap ability of Emry, Lurker of the Loch. |
The last three sideboard notes are the ones to remember. Vexing Bauble, Grafdigger's Cage, and Cursed Totem all hurt your own engine as well as the opponent's. Bring them in only when the opponent's version of that problem is the one that decides the match.
Mulligan Guide
What a Keepable Seven Looks Like
Every keep needs to answer three questions:
- Do you have blue on turn one or two? Blue mana casts Emry, Lurker of the Loch, warps Pinnacle Emissary, and pays the {U} in Kappa Cannoneer and Metallic Rebuke. Urza's Saga counts as a land but only makes colorless.
- Do you have a payoff? That means Emry, Lurker of the Loch, Pinnacle Emissary, Kappa Cannoneer, Basim Ibn Ishaq, or Urza's Saga. A pile of zero-drops with nothing to cash them in is not a keep.
- Can you reach three artifacts fast? That turns on Mox Opal, discounts Emry to a single {U}, and makes improvise real.
Watch your colors. Hard-casting Pinnacle Emissary needs red, and red only comes from Steam Vents (fetchable with either fetchland) or Mox Opal with metalcraft. The warp cost {U/R} can be paid with blue alone, so an Emissary hand without red is fine as long as you plan to warp it first. Basim Ibn Ishaq needs black from Darkslick Shores, Watery Grave, or Mox Opal. Mox Amber makes nothing without Emry, Lurker of the Loch or Basim on the battlefield, but it still counts toward metalcraft.
Example Hands
1. Darkslick Shores, Urza's Saga, Mox Opal, Mishra's Bauble, Tormod's Crypt, Emry, Lurker of the Loch, Kappa Cannoneer — Snap keep.
Turn one plays out like this:
- Play Shores.
- Cast Bauble, Crypt, and Opal to reach metalcraft.
- Cast Emry for {U}.
Turn two is Saga plus a Cannoneer that improvise makes nearly free. This is the ceiling of the deck.
2. Island, Island, Polluted Delta, Darkslick Shores, Watery Grave, Preordain, Metallic Rebuke — Ship.
This hand has five lands, no artifacts, and no threat. With no artifacts in play, Rebuke costs its full three mana, and Preordain digs only three cards deep for a payoff. A six-card hand with Saga and two artifacts beats this every time.
3. Mox Opal, Mox Amber, Mishra's Bauble, Welding Jar, Tormod's Crypt, Pinnacle Emissary, Kappa Cannoneer — Ship.
This is the classic trap. You can reach metalcraft and use Opal to warp Emissary, then cast Amber for a single Drone. After that, Emissary exiles at end step and you have no land. Amber stays dead with no legendary creature, and Cannoneer still needs {U} with no blue source beyond Opal. One mana per turn does not win.
4. Urza's Saga, Polluted Delta, Mishra's Bauble, Preordain, Basim Ibn Ishaq, Metallic Rebuke, Kappa Cannoneer — Keep against fair decks; ship on the play against fast decks.
Fetch Watery Grave and cast Bauble and Preordain on turn one. Saga then gives you a Construct engine over the next few turns. The weakness is Basim: Saga makes only colorless, so Basim needs a second colored land and probably arrives on turn three. Against midrange or control, that is plenty. Against a deck that kills you by turn four, this hand is too slow unless you are on the draw, where the extra card makes hitting a second colored land likely.
5. Six cards: Darkslick Shores, Urza's Saga, Engineered Explosives, Welding Jar, Mishra's Bauble, Pinnacle Emissary — Keep.
Warp Emissary off Shores, then cast the artifacts to make Drones. Saga's chapter III fetches a second threat-enabler or a zero-counter Engineered Explosives to sweep tokens. On six cards, one blue land plus Saga plus a payoff is the bar.
Play vs. Draw
On the play, speed is the point. Lean toward hands that cast Emry or Emissary on turn one or two and pressure early. Ship slow land-heavy sevens.
On the draw, keep slightly slower hands with Preordain or Mishra's Bauble, since the extra card smooths colors. Against aggro, value hands that hold Engineered Explosives or Rebuke over pure goldfish speed. You can't race from behind with a clunky curve.
Matchup Adjustments
Broodscale Bloodchief. Two cards change your keeps here:
- Vexing Bauble appears in 78 of the 82 Top 8 lists (source: MTGTop8 deck exports, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). It counters any spell cast with no mana spent, so your zero-cost artifacts get countered while it is out. Prefer hands with lands and real mana over hands built on free artifacts. Engineered Explosives with X of one or more still resolves.
- Grafdigger's Cage sits in all 82 sideboards (source: MTGTop8 deck exports, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). It stops players from casting spells from graveyards, which turns off Emry's recursion. After sideboarding, don't keep hands whose only engine is Emry looping artifacts.
UR Cutter Prowess. Consign to Memory is in 29 of the 30 sideboards (source: MTGTop8 deck exports, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). It counters triggered abilities and colorless spells, so it can stop Saga's chapters, Emissary's Drone triggers, and most of your artifacts.
- After sideboarding, don't keep a hand that relies on one Saga chapter III to function.
- Emissary's Drones can block only fliers, so they won't stop ground attackers. Count them as offense, not defense.
- Keep hands with early interaction: Engineered Explosives, Rebuke, and Fatal Push after boarding.
Control and slower midrange. Here you can keep almost any hand with two lands and one payoff. Hands with two threats beat hands with one threat and a wall of artifacts, because a single answer shouldn't end your game.
Sequencing & Key Lines
Turn 1: Warp First, Artifacts Second
Your most explosive opener comes from ordering, not raw card quality. Pinnacle Emissary only makes Drones for artifact spells cast after it is on the battlefield. With Emissary in hand, play your land, warp it for {U/R}, then cast your zero-drops one at a time: Mishra's Bauble, Tormod's Crypt, Welding Jar, Mox Opal, Mox Amber. The warp cost is hybrid, so a lone Island or Darkslick Shores pays it. Each cast leaves you a Drone, and those Drones stay after Emissary is exiled at end of turn. A hand with Emissary and three free artifacts ends turn 1 with six or more artifacts and live metalcraft.
Without Emissary, it can be right to hold one or two zero-drops for a later turn. This applies when nothing on your side gains from the artifact count right now, such as no Emry, Lurker of the Loch to discount or Mox Opal to turn on. Holding them keeps Drones available for when you draw Emissary or recast it from exile.
Land Sequencing
- Play Darkslick Shores by turn 3. Urza's Saga counts as a land, so Saga on turn 1 still leaves Shores untapped on turns 2 and 3.
- Choose fetch targets by color need. Mox Amber only makes colors of your legendary creatures, so it never makes red. Your red comes from Steam Vents or Mox Opal. Use Polluted Delta or Scalding Tarn to fetch Vents when you need to hardcast Emissary, and Watery Grave when black matters, such as Basim Ibn Ishaq or post-board Fatal Push and Thoughtseize.
- To activate Saga chapter II you need {2} from sources other than the Saga, because the ability taps the Saga itself. Plan your land drops so the Construct comes online the turn chapter II arrives.
Kappa Cannoneer: Cast It, Then Feed It
Kappa Cannoneer gets a counter and evasion whenever any artifact enters under your control, so cast it before your other artifacts that turn. With Emissary out, each artifact spell triggers Kappa twice: once for the artifact and once for the Drone. Improvise taps artifacts without using their {T} abilities, so summoning-sick Drones and Constructs can help pay. Tapped Drones can't block, though, so against aggro keep enough of them untapped.
Artifacts fetched by Saga chapter III enter the battlefield without being cast. They trigger Kappa but not Emissary or Basim.
Emry and Basim Turns
Emry's tap ability needs Emry to have been under your control since your last turn began. The exception is Skateboard: equipping it gives Emry haste, so you can use the ability the turn Emry lands. The standard loop is to sacrifice Mishra's Bauble or Welding Jar and recast it with Emry. That recast is an artifact spell, so it triggers Emissary, Basim, and Kappa again.
Basim draws and becomes unblockable only once per turn. Cast exactly one historic spell before combat to set that up, then save the rest for after combat if they don't feed Kappa.
Choosing the Saga Chapter III Target
- Tormod's Crypt: against graveyard decks, or to clear your own yard before a post-board Grafdigger's Cage matters.
- Pithing Needle: against opposing activated abilities. Naming Urza's Saga also shuts off your own copies, so only do it when theirs are the bigger threat.
- Shadowspear: against aggro, where lifelink and trample swing races.
- Skateboard: for haste on Kappa or Emry, or to tap a key blocker as it enters.
- Mox Opal: when you're short on colored mana.
Holding Up Metallic Rebuke
Metallic Rebuke costs almost nothing when you have untapped artifacts. Decide before you improvise a Kappa or crack Baubles whether you want to keep counter mana open. Spending at least one real mana on Rebuke also keeps it castable through Vexing Bauble.
Playing Around the Format's Interaction
Vexing Bauble. It appears in 78 of the 82 Broodscale Bloodchief Top 8 main decks (source: MTGTop8, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). It counters any spell cast with no mana spent. That includes your zero-drops, Emry recasts, an Emry reduced to zero by affinity, and a Kappa or Rebuke paid entirely by improvise.
- Before it lands, dump your free artifacts first.
- Once it's out, spend at least one real mana on every key spell. Cast Engineered Explosives for X of 1 or more, which spends mana.
Grafdigger's Cage. It sits in all 82 of those sideboards (source: MTGTop8, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18) and stops Emry from casting anything out of your graveyard. Post-board against Broodscale, treat Emry as a cheap legendary body for Mox Amber rather than as your engine. Build around Emissary and Kappa instead.
Consign to Memory. It shows up in 29 of 30 UR Cutter Prowess sideboards (source: MTGTop8, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). It counters triggered abilities or colorless spells, and replicate lets one copy hit several targets.
- Your colored spells, Kappa Cannoneer and Pinnacle Emissary, can't be targeted as spells, but their triggers can.
- Saga chapter III is also exposed. Bait the counter with a less important trigger, or advance Saga on turns they're tapped out.
Your own Engineered Explosives. Drones and Constructs are tokens with mana value 0, as are your Moxes and Baubles. An Explosives on zero wipes your own board. Set the counters to a number that misses your side, and remember that sunburst only counts colored mana. Mox Opal, the dual lands, and fetched shocks are how you reach two or three counters.
Matchup Matrix
Summary
| Matchup | Verdict | What decides it |

Broodscale Bloodchief
This is the matchup to prepare for: Broodscale Bloodchief took 82 of 460 Top 8 slots (source: MTGTop8, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). All 82 lists run 4 Urza's Saga, and 78 run Vexing Bauble in the main deck (source: MTGTop8 deck exports, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). Vexing Bauble counters any spell with no mana spent on it. That covers your Moxen, Mishra's Bauble, Tormod's Crypt, Welding Jar and X=0 Engineered Explosives. It also covers any Kappa Cannoneer or Metallic Rebuke paid for entirely with improvise.
Your plan: dump zero-drops before Vexing Bauble lands, and pay at least one real mana into improvise spells. To remove Vexing Bauble, cast Engineered Explosives with exactly one color for one counter. Check what else of yours costs 1 first: Skateboard, Shadowspear and Pithing Needle would go with it.
After sideboarding, every list has Grafdigger's Cage, which stops Emry, Lurker of the Loch from casting anything out of your graveyard. Sixty-one lists have Pithing Needle, which can name your Urza's Saga and shut off Construct production (source: MTGTop8 deck exports, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). Your own Pithing Needle does the same to their Saga. Consign to Memory counters their chapter III trigger.
Win this matchup with Kappa Cannoneer. Every artifact entering makes it unblockable that turn. For their side of the matchup, see our Broodscale Bloodchief Modern guide.
UR Cutter Prowess
All 30 Top 8 lists run 4 Lightning Bolt, 4 Preordain and 4 Mishra's Bauble. Consign to Memory sits in 29 of 30 sideboards and Tormod's Crypt in 21 (source: MTGTop8 deck exports, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18).
- Their removal: expect your small bodies (Emry, Lurker of the Loch, Basim Ibn Ishaq, Pinnacle Emissary) to die to cheap removal. Kappa Cannoneer's ward {4} is a heavy tax for a deck that wants to cast multiple spells a turn.
- Their Consign to Memory: it hits your colorless spells and every trigger the deck relies on, so bait it with a low-value trigger before you run out the important one.
- Your blockers: drone tokens can block only flyers. Plan to race, not wall up.
Fatal Push comes in to slow their clock. For their side, see our UR Cutter Prowess Modern guide.
Rakdos Delirium
Rakdos Delirium took 29 Top 8 slots across 19 events (source: MTGTop8, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). It is a graveyard-fueled midrange deck that trades one-for-one.
- Grind their removal: ward {4} on Kappa Cannoneer is miserable for a removal-based deck. Emry, Lurker of the Loch recasting Mishra's Bauble out-grinds them.
- Time your Crypt: fire Tormod's Crypt at their yard right before they cash in a big graveyard turn, not on sight.
For their side, see our Rakdos Delirium Modern guide.
Boros Aggro
Boros Aggro took 24 slots with 5 wins (source: MTGTop8, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). This matchup is a race:
- Explosives: set Engineered Explosives to the mana value they have the most of on the board.
- Lifelink: Shadowspear on any evasive threat swings the race.
- Sideboard: Fatal Push comes in. Trim clunky reactive slots like Metallic Rebuke, which is weak against cheap threats.
Keep hands that do something meaningful by turn two.
Scepter Chant
Scepter Chant took 24 slots across 20 events with 4 wins (source: MTGTop8, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). Treat it as combo:
- Pressure first: present a fast clock.
- Hold up an answer: keep Metallic Rebuke up on the turn they can deploy the Scepter.
- Sideboard: bring in Thoughtseize and Strix Serenade. Strix Serenade counters an artifact spell outright.
The matchup turns on whether you have pressure and interaction at the same time. Pressure alone loses to the lock. Interaction alone gives them time.
Graveyard Combo
Four main-deck Tormod's Crypt give you a real game one. Save it for the turn they commit, since a Crypt fired early just gets rebuilt around. After sideboarding, Grafdigger's Cage and Consign to Memory (which counters triggered abilities) come in. Remember that Cage also locks out your own Emry, Lurker of the Loch recursion.
Big Mana / Ramp
Your deck is faster. Spend Metallic Rebuke on their first must-answer spell, not on early setup. Their mana is tight early, so the {3} tax lands hardest in the early turns. Then keep attacking with Kappa Cannoneer.
Interactive Control
Control decks have to answer an army of artifact creatures and a ward {4} threat on the same turns. Basim Ibn Ishaq refuels you off historic spells. Your Saga tokens outlast spot removal. Avoid overextending into sweepers: two real threats on board is enough.
Mirror
Pinnacle Affinity took 22 Top 8 slots (source: MTGTop8, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18), so expect the mirror. Hold Engineered Explosives for a high-impact X: zero for Construct and Drone tokens, or the mana value of their key threats. Sideboard Consign to Memory in to fight Saga and Cannoneer triggers.
Sideboard / Tech Guide
The sideboard does two jobs. Black interaction (Fatal Push, Thoughtseize) covers fair and combo decks. The one-ofs give Urza's Saga new chapter III targets: Grafdigger's Cage and Vexing Bauble both cost {1}, so every Saga becomes a tutor for your hate piece. When you cut artifacts for nonartifact spells, keep the artifact count high enough that Mox Opal still turns on and Kappa Cannoneer still improvises on time.
| Matchup | In | Out |
|---|---|---|
| Broodscale Bloodchief | 3 Consign to Memory, 1 Strix Serenade, 2 Thoughtseize | 4 Tormod's Crypt, 2 Mox Amber |
| UR Cutter Prowess | 4 Fatal Push | 2 Metallic Rebuke, 2 Preordain |
| Fair creature decks (Rakdos Delirium, Boros Aggro, 5c Domain Aggro) | 4 Fatal Push | 1 Pithing Needle, 2 Preordain, 1 Metallic Rebuke |

Broodscale Bloodchief
This is the matchup to prepare for. It took 82 of 460 Top 8 slots (source: MTGTop8, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). The same lists ran Vexing Bauble main in 78 of 82, Grafdigger's Cage in all 82 sideboards and Pithing Needle in 61 (source: MTGTop8 deck exports, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18).
- Their Vexing Bauble: by your own copy's text, it counters any spell cast with no mana spent. That covers your Moxen, Mishra's Bauble, Tormod's Crypt, Welding Jar and a zero-X Engineered Explosives. Cutting Crypt and Mox Amber removes free spells you'd lose to it.
- Getting artifacts down through their Bauble: Saga's chapter III puts the artifact onto the battlefield rather than casting it, so it gets around Bauble entirely.
- Their Cage: it says players can't cast spells from graveyards, which switches off Emry, Lurker of the Loch's recursion. Treat Emry as a cheap body after game one.
- Your Consign to Memory: Consign to Memory answers their Urza's Saga chapter III trigger or any colorless spell. Replicate lets you answer two things in one window.
UR Cutter Prowess
Fatal Push is close to free value here. Your fetches, Baubles, Crypts and Saga sacrifices make revolt trivial, which extends its reach to mana value 4. Metallic Rebuke's tax gets worse as their mana opens up, so trim it.
Expect hate in game two. Consign to Memory showed up in 29 of 30 of their Top 8 sideboards and Tormod's Crypt in 21 (source: MTGTop8 deck exports, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). Consign counters your colorless spells and your triggers, including Saga III, the Pinnacle Emissary token and the Kappa Cannoneer counter. Bait it with a low-value colorless spell before committing the one that matters. Your blue creatures aren't colorless, so lean on them. Full matchup notes: UR Cutter Prowess Modern guide.
Fair creature decks
Bring in Push and cut the cards that don't block or trade. Engineered Explosives stays: set its sunburst count to the mana value their board shares. Against Rakdos Delirium, keep all four Tormod's Crypt. Fueling their graveyard is the axis to fight on there.
Graveyard decks
Grafdigger's Cage stops creature cards entering from graveyards. It also stops you casting from graveyards, which is why Emry leaves and the Mox Amber count drops with her.
Vexing Bauble against Living End punishes spells cast for no mana, but it is symmetrical. Cast your free artifacts before it lands, or pay for them through Saga. Crack it for a card once its job is done.
Keep Tormod's Crypt in both matchups. It's another instant-speed graveyard wipe.
Devoted Combo
Cursed Totem stops creatures' activated abilities, which is exactly where this combo lives. It also stops Emry's tap ability, so sequence any Emry recursion before Totem lands. Totem costs {2}, so Saga can't fetch it. Your Pithing Needle already in the main deck is a second, name-specific answer.
Ruby Storm
Thoughtseize strips the key spell before the big turn. Hold Consign to Memory for the payoff trigger, and replicate it if they can produce more than one.
Scepter Chant, UrzaTron, control
Discard is the main tool here. Strix Serenade counters any artifact, creature or planeswalker spell for one mana. The 2/2 flier it hands them matters less than whatever it stopped.
Pithing Needle stays in. Name the permanent whose non-mana activations decide the game. Against Tron, that's often a land.
Tech Choices & Variations
The engine is not negotiable: Mox Opal, Mishra's Bauble, Urza's Saga, Pinnacle Emissary, Kappa Cannoneer, Emry, Lurker of the Loch, Engineered Explosives and Metallic Rebuke are the deck. Roughly ten main-deck slots are open to tuning: the two Mox Amber, two Welding Jar, two Basim Ibn Ishaq, two Preordain, and the three single-copy Saga targets. These are the slots to adjust for your room.
The flex slots at a glance
| Slot | What it does here | Reasonable swap | What you give up |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 Mox Amber | Free artifact for metalcraft, improvise, Emissary and Kappa triggers. Makes blue or black only while Emry, Lurker of the Loch or Basim Ibn Ishaq is out. | Third Basim Ibn Ishaq or third Preordain | A zero-cost artifact count and some explosive starts |
| 2 Welding Jar | Free artifact that can sacrifice itself to regenerate Kappa Cannoneer, Pinnacle Emissary or a Construct | Main-deck Fatal Push | Artifact density and protection against destroy effects |
| 2 Basim Ibn Ishaq | Draws once per turn off historic spells, then attacks unblocked that turn. Turns on Mox Amber. | Third copy, or cut to one for Thoughtseize | Card flow versus disruption |
| 2 Preordain | Smooths draws toward Saga, Opal or a threat | Thoughtseize or Consign to Memory | Consistency for interaction |
| 1 Skateboard / 1 Shadowspear / 1 Pithing Needle | One-mana Saga chapter III targets | Shift the mix among the three | Haste and tempo, lifelink and trample, or a named lock piece |
Mox Amber versus a third Basim
Mox Amber is the weakest card in your opening hand when you have no legendary creature. It still counts as an artifact for everything the deck does. If your field punishes clunky draws, such as fast aggro where a stranded Amber is a wasted card, cut one for a third Basim Ibn Ishaq. That keeps the legendary count up for the remaining Amber and adds a threat that refuels you. Keep both Ambers when you expect slower, interactive opponents. There, raw artifact count powering out Kappa Cannoneer matters more than card quality.
Choosing the Saga package
Chapter III finds an artifact with mana cost {0} or {1}. The single copies exist so Saga can pick the right one each game:
- Skateboard: tap a blocker or a key permanent as it enters, then give a fresh Kappa Cannoneer or Construct haste. It is your speed tool against combo.
- Shadowspear: lifelink and trample win races against aggro. Its {1} ability answers hexproof or indestructible threats.
- Pithing Needle: stops non-mana activated abilities. Against opposing Urza's Saga decks, naming Saga shuts off chapter II Construct-making.
If your field is mostly aggro, consider a second Shadowspear over Pithing Needle. Swap the other way if you expect activated-ability decks.
Tuning for the expected field
Broodscale Bloodchief-heavy rooms. This is the most-played archetype in the brief's data, at 82 of 460 Top 8 slots (source: MTGTop8 event pages, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). Two facts matter:
- Vexing Bauble appeared main in 78 of those 82 lists (source: MTGTop8 deck exports, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). Per your own sideboard copy's text, Vexing Bauble counters spells cast with no mana spent. That hits Mox Opal, Mox Amber, Welding Jar, Tormod's Crypt and Mishra's Bauble.
- Grafdigger's Cage was in all 82 sideboards and Pithing Needle in 61 (source: MTGTop8 deck exports, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). Expect your Emry, Lurker of the Loch recursion to be shut off after game one.
Lean on threats that pay mana or improvise. Trim a Welding Jar or Mox Amber for a Preordain or Basim Ibn Ishaq. Consign to Memory counters colorless spells, so it is a live main-deck consideration here.
UR Cutter Prowess-heavy rooms. Consign to Memory appeared in 29 of 30 sideboards, Meltdown in 22 and Tormod's Crypt in 21 (source: MTGTop8 deck exports, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). Expect your artifacts to be targeted post-board. Against this deck:
- Fatal Push earns a main slot over a Welding Jar.
- Shadowspear lifelink gains value.
- Your four Tormod's Crypt keep doubling as graveyard disruption.
Graveyard decks (Living End, Instant Reanimator, Rakdos Delirium). Keep all four Tormod's Crypt. Be careful bringing in Grafdigger's Cage: it stops you from casting spells from your graveyard, which turns off Emry, Lurker of the Loch. If you board in Cage, trim Emry copies alongside it.
Watch the anti-synergies in your own board.
- Cursed Totem stops activated abilities of creatures, including Emry's.
- Your own Vexing Bauble counters your zero-cost artifacts the same way an opponent's would. Sideboard it in only against opponents who make it worth losing that half of your deck, and cut free artifacts when you do.
Budget Options
At roughly $1460 (TCGplayer market prices; approximate), this is not a cheap Modern deck, and the core can't be trimmed without changing what the deck is. The realistic budget approach is to buy the engine first, run a compromised mana base and sideboard, and upgrade in the order that adds the most wins per dollar.
Where the Money Likely Goes
- The engine: Urza's Saga and Mox Opal, four of each. These are likely the biggest single line items, and the deck does not function without them.
- The mana base: Polluted Delta, Scalding Tarn, Steam Vents, Watery Grave and Darkslick Shores. Ten lands of Modern staples add up fast.
- Premium spells: Engineered Explosives and Kappa Cannoneer in the main, plus four Thoughtseize in the sideboard.
What You Can't Cut
Mox Opal is the card that turns a pile of zero-drops into real mana, and its metalcraft threshold is what the rest of the list is built to hit. Urza's Saga is both a threat and a tutor. Chapter III fetches any artifact with mana cost {0} or {1}, so it finds Tormod's Crypt, Pithing Needle, Shadowspear, Skateboard or another Mox depending on what the game needs. Chapter II builds Construct tokens that scale with the artifact count.
Cutting either piece doesn't make a budget Pinnacle Affinity. It makes a different, weaker deck. The same goes for Kappa Cannoneer, Emry, Lurker of the Loch and Pinnacle Emissary: they are the payoffs every cheap artifact is there to feed. Buy these first and buy them as full playsets.
Acceptable Budget Swaps
Fetchlands → Islands. Polluted Delta and Scalding Tarn act as flexible colored sources. Delta can find Watery Grave for black or Steam Vents for red, since both are Islands, and Tarn finds either one too. Swap all five for basics and each shockland becomes exactly one source of its off-color. Here is what you give up:
- Hard-casting Pinnacle Emissary for {1}{U}{R} now leans on a single Steam Vents or an active Mox Opal. The Warp cost of {U/R} is hybrid, so blue alone still casts it that way.
- Basim Ibn Ishaq needs black from Watery Grave, Darkslick Shores or Mox Opal. Mox Amber off Emry, Lurker of the Loch only makes blue.
If you go this route, consider trimming Basim Ibn Ishaq for a third Preordain or a third Welding Jar to lower your color demands.
Shocklands. Keep at least one Steam Vents and one Watery Grave even on a budget. They are your only true dual-type lands, and the fetches you add later need them as targets.
Engineered Explosives. You can trim to two copies early. The flex slots can go to a second Pithing Needle, a third Welding Jar or a third Preordain. The cost is real: you lose your main-deck answer to wide boards and token strategies, and sunburst flexibility is hard to replace. Restore this before upgrading the mana base past the basics.
Sideboard Thoughtseize. This is the easiest cut. Start with Consign to Memory, Strix Serenade, Fatal Push, Grafdigger's Cage, Cursed Totem and Vexing Bauble, and fill the gap with extra copies of the cheaper cards. Discard is a luxury in a deck whose main plan is speed. Against combo you will feel the loss, so this is the card to add once the main deck is complete.
Upgrade Path
- Engine and payoffs: four Mox Opal, four Urza's Saga, four Kappa Cannoneer, four Emry, Lurker of the Loch, four Pinnacle Emissary, plus the zero- and one-drop artifacts. Play basics and one of each shockland.
- Engineered Explosives back to four and Metallic Rebuke to four. These cards win interactive games, while the mana upgrades mostly smooth out games you would usually win anyway.
- Darkslick Shores. Four untapped early black sources let you run Basim Ibn Ishaq properly and cast Fatal Push after sideboarding.
- Fetchlands: Polluted Delta first, since it reaches both shocklands, then Scalding Tarn.
- Thoughtseize last. The top archetype in the brief, Broodscale Bloodchief, took 82 of 460 Top 8 slots (source: MTGTop8, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). Your sideboard money should prioritize the cards you bring in against it, so check the sideboard chapter's plan before spending on discard.
One Practical Note
Before you buy paper staples, play the full list digitally. The deck's edge comes from sequencing artifacts for Mox Opal, Pinnacle Emissary triggers and Kappa Cannoneer counters. If you learn those lines on a compromised budget build, you'll develop habits that the full mana base would punish less, and the budget build will punish more.
Common Mistakes
1. Casting artifacts before Pinnacle Emissary
Pinnacle Emissary only makes Drones for artifact spells cast after it is on the battlefield. If you lead with your Mox Opal, Mishra's Bauble and Tormod's Crypt and then cast Emissary, you throw away a board's worth of fliers. Use the Moxen for mana first, then cast Emissary, then cast everything else. Warp is a sequencing tool, not a discount. Warp it for {U/R} on the turn you plan to dump several cheap artifacts, then cast it again from exile on a later turn. Warping it onto an empty hand just gives you a 3/3 that leaves at end of turn and does nothing.
2. Breaking your own artifact count
Most of this deck scales with how many artifacts you control:
- Metalcraft on Mox Opal
- Affinity on Emry, Lurker of the Loch
- Improvise on Kappa Cannoneer and Metallic Rebuke
- The size of every Construct
Cracking a Mishra's Bauble or Tormod's Crypt just because you can is how a 4/4 Construct turns into a 3/3 that trades. It is also how Opal goes dark the turn you needed the mana. Before you sacrifice anything, count what the remaining board still turns on. Remember that Mox Amber only taps for colors among your legendary creatures and planeswalkers. Without Emry, Lurker of the Loch or Basim Ibn Ishaq in play, it is a free artifact for your counts and nothing else. Never point Tormod's Crypt at your own graveyard. Emry wants those artifacts there.
3. Tapping your attackers to improvise
Improvise lets you tap any artifact, including Drones, Constructs, Emissary and Cannoneer. On your own turn, tap noncreature artifacts first: Moxen you have already used, Welding Jar, idle Equipment. Every creature you tap for Metallic Rebuke or Kappa Cannoneer precombat is damage you are not dealing. On the opponent's turn, holding Rebuke up by planning to tap your blockers is fine only if you won't need those blockers. Against aggro, that plan often costs more life than the counter saves.
4. Blowing up your own board with Engineered Explosives
Drone and Construct tokens have mana value 0. So do your Moxen, Baubles, Tormod's Crypt and Welding Jar. An Engineered Explosives on zero against opposing tokens or cheap artifacts also wipes most of your board. Settle the number when you cast it. Sunburst counts colors spent, and Mox Opal can supply whichever color you are missing. If you must pop it at zero, keep Welding Jar ready: its regenerate can save one key artifact from the destroy effect. The same rule applies when Urza's Saga fetches Explosives. It enters with no charge counters, so it is a zero-counter bomb that hits your own team too.
5. Mismanaging Urza's Saga
Making a Construct costs {2} plus tapping the Saga itself, so the Saga's own colorless mana can't help pay. On the chapter II turn, you need two other mana open, ideally on the turn it reaches chapter II and again before chapter III sacrifices it. Spending that mana on a marginal spell and getting zero Constructs is a common way to lose a land for nothing.
For the chapter III search, choose the tutor target for the game in front of you. Your legal targets are:
- Pithing Needle against an activated-ability threat
- Shadowspear to race
- Skateboard for haste
- Mox Opal to turn on mana
- Tormod's Crypt against graveyard decks
Grabbing the first Mox you see is not the same thing.
6. Wasting Basim and Emry triggers
Basim Ibn Ishaq draws a card and becomes unblockable only once each turn. Casting four historic spells in one turn draws one card. When the board is stable, keep one cheap artifact back so next turn's Basim trigger is guaranteed.
Emry, Lurker of the Loch is a creature, so its tap ability waits a turn unless it has haste. Skateboard provides haste, which lets you recast a Bauble or Mox from the graveyard immediately. Every recast is an artifact spell, so it also triggers Emissary, feeds Cannoneer counters, and counts as historic for Basim.
7. Feeding free spells into Vexing Bauble
Opposing Vexing Bauble counters any spell cast with no mana spent, which covers every zero-cost artifact in your deck. Broodscale Bloodchief ran it main in 78 of its 82 Top 8 lists (source: MTGTop8, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). When it is on the table, stop jamming Moxen and Baubles into it:
- Cast Engineered Explosives for at least X=1.
- Lean on spells that require mana anyway: Emry's colored cost, Cannoneer, Emissary.
- Deal with the Bauble before you rebuild your artifact count.
Treating it as a minor tax instead of a must-answer is how you strand a full grip of artifacts.
Tournament Prep & Final Notes
What to Practice
- Tap order on goldfish turns. Most of your misplays will happen before a spell resolves. Deal yourself opening hands and play through turns two and three out loud. Before you touch anything, decide which artifacts make mana and which tap for improvise. The deck rewards counting first and clicking second.
- Emry targets. Every turn Emry, Lurker of the Loch is online, you choose one artifact to recast. Practice ranking the options. You can loop Mishra's Bauble for card flow, rebuy Tormod's Crypt against graveyard decks, or recast any artifact just to trigger Pinnacle Emissary and Basim Ibn Ishaq.
- Saga chapter III fetches by matchup. Know your {0}/{1} targets before the event:
- Tormod's Crypt
- Pithing Needle
- Shadowspear
- Skateboard
- Welding Jar
- Mishra's Bauble and both Moxen
- Grafdigger's Cage and Vexing Bauble after sideboarding
- Reps against the hate you will actually face. Broodscale Bloodchief was the most-represented archetype in recent Top 8s, with 82 of 460 slots. UR Cutter Prowess was next with 30 (source: MTGTop8, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18). That decides where your practice goes:
- Every one of the 82 Broodscale lists sideboarded Grafdigger's Cage.
- 78 of those lists played Vexing Bauble in the main deck.
- 61 of them sideboarded Pithing Needle.
- 29 of the 30 Cutter lists sideboarded Consign to Memory (source: MTGTop8 deck exports, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18).
Rules Interactions to Know Cold
- Improvise is not mana. Vexing Bauble counters a spell if no mana was spent to cast it. A Metallic Rebuke or Kappa Cannoneer paid entirely by tapping artifacts gets countered. So does an Emry, Lurker of the Loch reduced to zero by affinity. Against an opposing Bauble, spend at least one real mana on anything that matters.
- Mana abilities come first, improvise second. Tapping Mox Opal or Mox Amber for mana means that artifact can't also tap for improvise. Tapping Mishra's Bauble or Tormod's Crypt for improvise means you can't activate it until it untaps. If you need Crypt this turn, leave it untapped.
- Cast versus enter. The two payoffs trigger on different events:
- Pinnacle Emissary triggers when you cast an artifact spell.
- Kappa Cannoneer triggers when an artifact enters.
- An Urza's Saga chapter III fetch or a Construct token triggers Cannoneer only.
- Each Drone token Emissary makes is an artifact, so it also triggers Cannoneer.
- Recasting an artifact with Emry is a cast, so it triggers Emissary, Basim and Cannoneer.
- Emry's ability needs her untapped, and timing rules still apply. Skateboard gives haste. Equipped to a freshly cast Emry, that lets her tap the same turn.
- Basim draws once per turn. Don't sequence a turn expecting a second draw.
- Mox Amber needs a legendary creature. Without Emry, Lurker of the Loch or Basim Ibn Ishaq in play, it is just an artifact for metalcraft and improvise.
- Engineered Explosives counts colors, not mana. Colorless mana from Urza's Saga adds no charge counter. At zero counters it destroys your own {0} artifacts: both Moxen, Mishra's Bauble, Tormod's Crypt and Welding Jar. Check your board before you fire it.
- Your own sideboard can lock out Emry.
- Grafdigger's Cage stops players from casting spells from graveyards, and that includes you.
- Cursed Totem shuts off Emry's tap ability.
- An opposing Pithing Needle doesn't stop everything. It doesn't touch mana abilities. Naming Urza's Saga still lets the Saga tap for {C} but turns off Construct production.
- Consign to Memory covers two kinds of targets.
- It counters colorless spells: your Moxen, Baubles, Crypt, Jar, Explosives and Equipment.
- It counters triggered abilities: Cannoneer counters, Emissary Drones and Basim draws.
- Cannoneer and Emissary are colored spells, so it can't counter them on the stack.
- Metallic Rebuke gives the opponent a choice. They can pay {3}. It is strongest when they have tapped low, so time it to their mana.
Clock and Time Management
The deck doesn't take many turns to win, but a single turn involves a lot of actions. Emry recasts, Drone triggers, Cannoneer counters and Saga activations all add up. On a chess clock that cost is real.
- Plan the whole turn before your first action. Decide which artifacts tap, what Emry rebuys and where Equipment goes.
- Set your stops deliberately so you aren't clicking through your own triggers one at a time.
- Remember that Mishra's Bauble draws at the next upkeep. Factor that card into the following turn, not the current one.
- When you are clearly ahead, take the simplest attack that wins. Don't build the maximum board.
Final Assessment
This list earned 1st place at a 72-player MTGO Challenge on 2026-10-21. The archetype also has a track record across the format: 22 Top 8 slots and 4 wins in recent Modern events (source: MTGTop8, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-18).
The deck's strengths:
- It is fast and resilient to spot removal, thanks to Ward on Cannoneer, Jar regeneration and Saga rebuilding the board.
- Its toolbox lets one land fetch the right answer for the matchup.
Its weaknesses:
- It is a narrow target for dedicated artifact and graveyard hate.
- The most-played archetype in the data sideboarded Grafdigger's Cage in every Top 8 list, so expect hate after board in that matchup.
Pick this deck if you will put in the reps to sequence it cleanly and know the hate cards' text as well as your own. Played precisely, it punishes slow starts and stumbles, and it can win through one piece of hate. Played on autopilot, it beats itself.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does Pinnacle Affinity win games in Modern?
It turns free artifacts into damage faster than a fair deck can answer. Kappa Cannoneer is the primary closer, growing and becoming unblockable whenever an artifact enters. Urza's Saga Constructs and Pinnacle Emissary Drones go wide, and Basim Ibn Ishaq adds card advantage.
What are the most important cards in Pinnacle Affinity?
The guide calls the engine non-negotiable: Mox Opal, Mishra's Bauble, Urza's Saga, Pinnacle Emissary, Kappa Cannoneer, Emry, Lurker of the Loch, Engineered Explosives and Metallic Rebuke. Urza's Saga is described as the best card in the deck.
Why should I cast Pinnacle Emissary before my other artifacts?
Pinnacle Emissary only makes Drones for artifact spells cast after it is on the battlefield. Warp it for one hybrid mana, then cast your zero-drops one at a time. The Drones stay after Emissary is exiled at end of turn.
Which matchups are the hardest for Pinnacle Affinity?
The guide lists no unfavored matchups, but Broodscale Bloodchief is the one to prepare for. Its main-deck Vexing Bauble counters spells cast with no mana spent, and its sideboard Grafdigger's Cage shuts off Emry, Lurker of the Loch's recursion. UR Cutter Prowess, Boros Aggro, Scepter Chant, control and the mirror are rated even.
How do I play around Vexing Bauble with this deck?
Dump your free artifacts before it lands. Once it is out, spend at least one real mana on every key spell, including improvise spells, and cast Engineered Explosives for X of 1 or more. Urza's Saga chapter III puts its artifact onto the battlefield without casting it, so it gets around Bauble.
What are the best budget swaps for Pinnacle Affinity?
Swap the fetchlands for Islands while keeping one Steam Vents and one Watery Grave. You can trim Engineered Explosives to two early and skip sideboard Thoughtseize at first. The guide says not to cut Mox Opal, Urza's Saga or the payoff creatures.
What should I practice before taking Pinnacle Affinity to a tournament?
Practice tap order on goldfish turns and ranking Emry, Lurker of the Loch recast targets. Know your Urza's Saga chapter III fetches by matchup ahead of time. Get reps winning through the hate you will face, such as Grafdigger's Cage, Vexing Bauble, Pithing Needle and Consign to Memory.
How do I avoid blowing up my own board with Engineered Explosives?
Drone and Construct tokens, Moxen, Baubles, Tormod's Crypt and Welding Jar all have mana value 0, so a zero-counter Explosives wipes them too. Sunburst counts only colored mana, so set the counters to a number that misses your side.
