Archetype Overview
Marshall.D.Teach Black/Yellow is a Life-control deck that makes every attack against you cost the opponent something. Most decks treat their Life as a clock that runs down. This list treats its Life as a stack of loaded effects that it builds, curates, and refills. It took 1st place at ChinoizeCup #127 MONDAY (64 players, played by Limitless user fuat). The reasons it can win a room that size are all in the card text.
What the Deck Is Doing
The Leader sets the posture. During your opponent's turn, all of your Characters gain +1 cost, so removal that checks a cost ceiling has to reach one step higher. Once per turn, when the opponent attacks, you may trash a card with a [Trigger] from hand to change the attack's target to your Leader or to one of your Blackbeard Pirates Characters. That redirect gives you three things:
- Turn hits into value. Send an attack aimed at your Leader into Vasco Shot, Doc Q or Van Augur. Each of them draws a card when K.O.'d. Vasco also rests an opposing Character with a cost of 6 or less. Doc Q also K.O.s up to two opposing Characters with a cost of 1 or less.
- Protect a key body. Pull an attack off an important Character and onto your Leader.
- Make attacks fail. Redirect into a big body the attacker can't beat, such as a 10000 or 12000 Marshall.D.Teach.
The redirect isn't free. The card you trash is a resource you're spending. But the deck is built so that spending works for you.
Why the Plan Is Strong
Most of the deck carries a [Trigger]. Your Leader's cost is easy to pay. More importantly, the Life cards your opponent flips are far more likely to fire than whiff. The best Triggers swing the board:
- The 8-cost Marshall.D.Teach negates an opposing Character and then K.O.s one with a cost of 5 or less.
- Doc Q and Vasco Shot fire their K.O. effects straight from Life.
- Catarina Devon draws and replays a cost-1 Blackbeard Pirates Character from your trash.
- Boa Hancock and You'll Frighten Me... ♡ put a Trigger Character with 6000 power or less from your hand onto the field.
You control what's in your Life. This is the deck's real identity. Four cards add to your Life:
- The 8-cost Marshall.D.Teach looks at three cards and puts your pick on top of your Life.
- Shiryu puts a Blackbeard Pirates card with a cost of 6 or less from your trash on top of your Life face-up, so you choose exactly which Trigger waits for the next hit.
- Borsalino adds a Life card when you're at 2 or fewer. He is also a 6000 Borsalino Blocker.
- Boa Hancock adds a Life card for you and moves the top card of the opponent's Life to their hand. Your Leader has The Seven Warlords of the Sea type, so this always works.
You start at 4 Life and can climb back from low totals. Your opponent has to push through damage while hitting into effects you chose.
The trash is a second resource. Several cards fill your trash:
- My Era...Begins!! trashes the cards it doesn't take.
- Fullalead asks you to trash a card from hand.
- The Leader's redirect trashes a Trigger card.
Several cards cash that trash back in:
- Jesus Burgess gains +1000 power for every four cards there, and he can't be K.O.'d by opponent's effects.
- Black Vortex returns a Trigger card from your trash to your hand.
- Shiryu and Catarina Devon both pull from the trash.
Discarding for the Leader or the Stage is rarely a pure loss.
The card flow is steady. Your cost-1 Characters replace themselves when K.O.'d, and so does Sanjuan.Wolf. My Era...Begins!! and Fullalead dig for Blackbeard Pirates pieces. Zehahahahaha! draws two off its Trigger. A deck this reactive needs to keep its hand full, and this one does.
It has a real finish. At 10 DON!!, Zehahahahaha! plays a Marshall.D.Teach from your hand and takes the top card of the opponent's Life. If that Teach is the 10-cost version, it was played this turn, so its activated ability is live right away. It negates the opposing Leader's effect, negates a Character's effect, and stops that Character from attacking through the opponent's next turn. That is a 12000 Blocker, a Life swing, and a shutdown in one turn. You don't race; you stabilize and then end the game on your terms.
Catarina Devon rounds out the offense. When attacking, she copies the power of an opposing Character, so she scales into whatever the opponent has built.
Who Should Pick It Up
This deck fits you if you like making decisions on your opponent's turn. Each attack asks the same questions:
- Do you redirect it?
- Which Trigger card is worth trashing?
- Do you take the hit to flip Life?
- Do you let a cost-1 body die to draw?
You need to track your Life contents, your trash count for Jesus Burgess, and your DON!! total for Zehahahahaha!.
Skip it if you want a proactive deck that wins by curving out and swinging. This list wins long games by making the opponent's attacks unprofitable, and it punishes autopilot on both sides of the table. At roughly $259, it's a mid-priced investment. It pays off most for players who'll put in the reps to learn when to block, when to redirect, and when to let the Triggers do the work.
Core Strategy & Game Plan
This deck is a defensive value engine with a hard-hitting finish. Your opponent's attacks become your resource: the Leader turns their swings into card draw and disruption, your Life is stacked with Triggers you chose, and the late game ends with 10000+ power bodies that strip Life without needing to attack. You aren't racing. You make every attack cost the opponent something until your top end takes over.
The Redirect Engine
The Leader's once-per-turn redirect is the center of the deck. It costs one card with a Trigger from hand, and almost everything in the list qualifies. The only cards that don't are Jesus Burgess, Borsalino, the 10-cost Marshall.D.Teach and Fullalead. You will almost always have fuel, so the real question each turn is where to send the attack.
- Onto a 1-cost On K.O. body. This is the default. Each of these Characters draws you a card when it is K.O.'d, and each adds its own effect:
- Doc Q has 0 power, so it loses to anything. Its K.O. also K.O.s up to two of the opponent's Characters with a cost of 1 or less.
- Vasco Shot rests up to one opposing Character with a cost of 6 or less. Aim it at an active attacker that hasn't swung yet to take it out of the turn.
- Van Augur's On K.O. only works on the opponent's turn, which is exactly when the redirect puts it in the line of fire.
- Onto the Leader. Use this when the attack is aimed at a Character you need to keep, like a grown Jesus Burgess or a Shiryu you want to swing with next turn.
- Onto Sanjuan.Wolf. Its K.O. draws and sets one of your cards to 7000 base power for the turn. Use this when you need the 7000 to survive the rest of their attacks or to save Counters.
The redirect only targets Blackbeard Pirates Characters. Borsalino and Boa Hancock can't receive it, but Borsalino guards itself as a Blocker.
The Leader also gives all your Characters +1 cost on the opponent's turn. That pushes your 1-cost bodies out of range of "cost 1 or less" removal. More broadly, any cost-capped removal the opponent fires during their own turn reaches one step less of your board. Opponents who try to clear your bait with effects before attacking pay more for it.
Life Is a Resource You Build
Four Life is the baseline. Several cards add to it and let you choose what goes there:
- The 8-cost Marshall.D.Teach looks at three cards and puts one on top of your Life. Choose a Trigger.
- Shiryu trashes a card from hand to put a Blackbeard Pirates card with a cost of 6 or less from your trash onto your Life face-up. Good picks are Catarina Devon, Doc Q or Vasco Shot. Catarina Devon's Trigger draws a card and replays a 1-cost Blackbeard from the trash.
- Borsalino adds the top card of your deck to Life when you are at 2 or fewer.
- Boa Hancock adds the top card of your deck to Life and takes the opponent's top Life card to their hand.
Face-up Life tells the opponent what they'll hit. That's fine. Either they walk into a known Trigger, or they stop attacking your Leader, which is the outcome you want anyway.
The best Trigger to hit is the 8-cost Marshall.D.Teach. It negates one opposing Character and then K.O.s one with a cost of 5 or less, which can swing a turn on the opponent's own attack.
The Trash Feeds Everything
Several cards trash as a cost or as part of their effect:
- Every redirect trashes a card.
- My Era...Begins!! trashes the two cards it doesn't take.
- Fullalead and Shiryu each trash a card from hand.
That trash pays off three ways:
- Jesus Burgess gains +1000 power for every four cards in your trash, and it can't be K.O.'d by the opponent's effects. It becomes the threat that can only be handled in battle.
- Black Vortex returns a Trigger card from the trash to your hand. That is a redirect fuel card, a Doc Q to replay, or a big Marshall.D.Teach you trashed earlier.
- Shiryu and Catarina Devon pull bodies back out of the trash.
Trashing is never a pure loss here. Sequence your trashes with Jesus Burgess's next 1000-power step and your Shiryu targets in mind.
The Finish
Once you have 10 DON!! on the field, Zehahahahaha! plays a Marshall.D.Teach from your hand for its 8 cost and takes the opponent's top Life card to their hand.
The best target is the 10-cost Marshall.D.Teach. It counts as played that turn, so its Activate: Main works right away. That negates the opponent's Leader effect for the turn, negates one Character, and stops that Character from attacking through their next turn. You get a 12000 Blocker, a stripped Life card, a shut-off Leader and a locked-down attacker in one turn, with DON!! left over to attach.
The 10000-power 8-cost Marshall.D.Teach is the alternative target. Pick it when you want another card added to your Life more than the lockdown.
Catarina Devon covers the middle turns. On attack, its base power becomes the power of an opposing Character you choose. It can trade up into whatever the opponent's biggest body is.
The Ideal Game, by DON!!
- 1–2 DON!!: Play Fullalead or My Era...Begins!! to dig for Blackbeard pieces. Get a 1-cost bait Character on board, with Doc Q or Vasco Shot first. Keep Trigger cards in hand. Every one is a redirect.
- 3–5 DON!!: Play Jesus Burgess, Catarina Devon or Sanjuan.Wolf while you keep redirecting into On K.O. bodies for cards. Once your Life drops to 2, Borsalino refills it and blocks.
- 6–8 DON!!: Play Shiryu to set a face-up Trigger, then the 8-cost Marshall.D.Teach to stack another. Your hand should be growing while the opponent's board shrinks.
- 9–10 DON!!: Play Boa Hancock, then Zehahahahaha! into the 10-cost Marshall.D.Teach. Strip Life, lock their best attacker, and close with your big bodies and a large Jesus Burgess.
Your posture is reactive until about 8 DON!!. Spend your redirect every turn you can, defend Counters with bodies rather than cards from hand, and only commit to attacking once your top end can take Life faster than the opponent can rebuild.
Card Choices & Breakdown
The Leader dictates the build
Marshall.D.Teach (Leader) does two things on your opponent's turn. It raises your Characters' cost by 1, so cost-capped removal has to aim higher. Once per turn it can trash a card with a [Trigger] from hand to send an attack into your Leader or one of your Blackbeard Pirates Characters. That redirect is the core of the list. It turns your own cheap Characters into landmines your opponent is forced to K.O., and it requires a steady supply of [Trigger] cards in hand. Every card in the 50 except Jesus Burgess, Borsalino, the cost-10 Marshall.D.Teach and Fullalead carries a [Trigger]. So almost any card is valid fodder for the redirect, and Life damage flips into value more often than not.
The cost-1 On K.O. package
- 4x Doc Q: 0 power, so any redirected attack K.O.s it. With your Blackbeard Leader, the On K.O. draws a card and K.O.s up to two opposing Characters with cost 1 or less, on either player's turn. Its +2000 counter is the best in the deck, which gives you a real choice between pitching it and keeping it.
- 4x Vasco Shot: On K.O. draws and rests an opposing Character with cost 6 or less. Fired on your opponent's turn, it stops a second attacker before it swings. As a [Trigger], it shuts down an attacker the moment your Life is hit.
- 2x Van Augur: Draws and applies its 3000-power effect to an opposing Leader or Character. Its On K.O. only works on your opponent's turn, which is narrower than the other two, so it sits at 2.
The 4-cost midgame
- 4x Jesus Burgess: Your opponent's effects can't K.O. it, and it gains +1000 for every 4 cards in your trash. My Era...Begins!!, Fullalead, Shiryu and your own K.O.'d bodies all fill the trash. Burgess is the main reason the list is happy to trash cards so freely.
- 4x Catarina Devon: When attacking, it copies an opposing Character's power, so it trades up into whatever big body they commit. Its [Trigger] draws and plays a cost-1 Blackbeard from trash, rebuying a spent Doc Q or Vasco Shot. It also carries a +2000 counter.
- 2x Sanjuan.Wolf: A 5000 body whose On K.O. draws and sets your Leader's or a Character's base power to 7000 for the turn. It's a strong redirect target, but it competes with Burgess and Catarina for the same turn, so it stays at 2.
Life engine and defense
- 4x Borsalino: A 6000 [Blocker] that adds a Life card when you're at 2 or fewer. It is not Blackbeard Pirates, so your Leader can't redirect into it and your searchers can't find it. It's here because the deck needs a [Blocker] at 5 that also refuels Life.
- 4x Shiryu: An 8000 body that trashes a card from hand to put a Blackbeard Pirates card with cost 6 or less from trash face-up on top of Life. Picking Vasco Shot or Catarina Devon stacks a [Trigger] you know is coming. Your opponent sees it too, so choose based on what they can play around. Its own [Trigger] draws two cards.
- 4x Marshall.D.Teach (cost 8): On Play looks at 3 cards and adds one to Life. Unlike Borsalino, it has no Life condition and lets you choose the card. Its [Trigger] negates an opposing Character, then K.O.s one with cost 5 or less, one of the strongest Life flips in the list.
- 2x Boa Hancock: Your Leader is a Seven Warlords of the Sea, so its On Play adds a Life card and pulls your opponent's top Life into their hand. Its [Trigger] plays a [Trigger] Character with 6000 power or less from hand. At cost 9 with no counter it's top-end, so 2 is enough.
The finisher
- 4x Marshall.D.Teach (cost 10): A 12000 [Blocker] that, on the turn it's played, negates the opposing Leader for the turn. It then negates a Character and stops it attacking until the end of your opponent's next turn. It has no [Trigger], so it can't feed the redirect. Plan to play it, not pitch it.
- 2x Zehahahahaha!: At 10 DON!!, it plays a Marshall.D.Teach from hand and takes your opponent's top Life. Cheating in the cost-10 copy still counts as "played this turn," so its negation goes live with DON!! to spare. It's dead early, but its [Trigger] draws 2 and trashes 1, and it can always be pitched to the Leader. Two copies keep the finisher findable without clogging opening hands.
Search, recursion and the one-ofs
- 4x My Era...Begins!!: Look at 3, take a Blackbeard Pirates card, trash the rest. It's card selection and Jesus Burgess fuel in one, and it works as a [Trigger] too.
- 4x Fullalead: A repeatable dig that converts an unwanted card into a Blackbeard Pirates card. The trashed card feeds Burgess and becomes a target for Black Vortex. It bottoms the misses rather than trashing them, so pick between this and My Era...Begins!! based on whether you need trash count or deck quality.
- 1x Black Vortex: Returns a [Trigger] card from trash to hand. It reloads redirect fodder or rebuys a key piece like the cost-8 Marshall.D.Teach. Its [Trigger] negates an opposing Leader or Character. You only ever need one, and it can't fetch itself.
- 1x You'll Frighten Me... ♡: A [Counter] that stops an active opposing Character from attacking, but only at 2 or fewer Life. That condition keeps it at a single copy. Its [Trigger] puts a [Trigger] Character from hand onto the board.
The Decklist
This is the exact 50 that fuat piloted to 1st Place at ChinoizeCup #127 MONDAY (64 players, 2026-10-26). The estimated price is about $259 at TCGplayer market prices. Two different Marshall.D.Teach Characters appear in the list, so card numbers are shown to tell them apart.
Leader
| Qty | Card | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Marshall.D.Teach (OP16-080) | Black/Yellow, 4 Life. On your opponent's turn your Characters get +1 cost, and once per turn it can redirect an attack by trashing a [Trigger] card from hand. |
Characters (38)
| Qty | Card | Cost | Role |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | Doc Q | 1 | A +2000 Counter that draws and clears small Characters when K.O.'d. |
| 4 | Vasco Shot | 1 | Draws and rests a Character of cost 6 or less when K.O.'d. |
| 2 | Van Augur | 1 | Flex: the third 1-cost redirect target, trimmed because its power swing only works on your opponent's turn. |
| 4 | Jesus Burgess | 4 | A body your opponent's effects can't K.O. It grows as your trash fills. |
| 4 | Catarina Devon | 4 | Copies a Character's power when attacking. Its Trigger rebuys a 1-cost from your trash. |
| 2 | Sanjuan.Wolf | 4 | Flex: a 5000 body that draws and sets a 7000 base power when K.O.'d. |
| 4 | Borsalino | 5 | The only Blocker below cost 10. Refills Life at 2 or less. |
| 4 | Shiryu | 6 | Turns a card from hand into a face-up Blackbeard Life card from your trash. |
| 4 | Marshall.D.Teach (OP16-119) | 8 | A 10000 body that sets up your Life. Its Trigger negates and K.O.s. |
| 2 | Boa Hancock | 9 | Flex: gains a Life and strips one of your opponent's, using the Leader's Warlords type. |
| 4 | Marshall.D.Teach (OP09-093) | 10 | A 12000 Blocker finisher that negates their Leader and a Character on the turn it lands. |
Events (8)
| Qty | Card | Cost | Role |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | My Era...Begins!! | 1 | Digs for Blackbeard pieces and fills the trash for Jesus Burgess. |
| 1 | You'll Frighten Me... ♡ | 1 | Flex: a low-Life Counter that stops an attacker. Its Trigger cheats a Character into play. |
| 1 | Black Vortex | 1 | Flex: returns a spent [Trigger] card to hand, which reloads the Leader's redirect. |
| 2 | Zehahahahaha! | 8 | Flex: at 10 DON!!, puts either Teach Character into play and takes a Life card. |
Stage (4)
| Qty | Card | Cost | Role |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | Fullalead | 1 | Turns your spare cards into Blackbeard cards every turn. |
Reading the list
- [Trigger] density: 34 of the 50 cards carry a [Trigger]. The only exceptions are Jesus Burgess, Borsalino, Marshall.D.Teach (OP09-093) and Fullalead. That is why the Leader's redirect is almost always live and why Life checks hit so often.
- Curve: the deck has ten 1-cost Characters, ten 4-costs, then a steady climb from cost 5 to cost 10. You don't need a 2- or 3-drop Character. The early turns go to Fullalead, My Era...Begins!! and setting up the 1-costs as attack targets.
- Locked core: every 4-of is part of the engine. The 2-ofs and 1-ofs marked as flex are where you tune the list, covered later in the guide.
Opening Hands & Mulligan
The checks below come straight from the curve and from what your Leader needs to function. Your Leader's redirect costs a card with a [Trigger] from hand, and most of this list carries a [Trigger]. That makes nearly any card a defensive resource on the opponent's turn. The cards that can't pay for it are Jesus Burgess, Borsalino, the 10-cost Marshall.D.Teach and Fullalead. What your opening five actually lacks is usually tempo, not defense.
The Three Checks
- A 1-cost play. Your 1-cost options are Doc Q, Vasco Shot, Van Augur, My Era...Begins!! and Fullalead. Without one, your first turn does nothing and your trash stays empty. Jesus Burgess and Shiryu both care about the trash.
- A 4-cost body or a way to find one. That means Jesus Burgess, Catarina Devon or Sanjuan.Wolf. My Era...Begins!! and Fullalead also count, because both dig for any Blackbeard Pirates card.
- Counter value. Doc Q and Catarina Devon give +2000. Shiryu, Boa Hancock, both Character Marshall.D.Teach and the Events other than You'll Frighten Me... ♡ give nothing on defense except as redirect fuel.
Hit all three and you keep. Hit two and you keep if one of them is a search card. Hit one and you send it back.
Hands You Keep
- Fullalead, Vasco Shot, Catarina Devon, Shiryu, 8-cost Marshall.D.Teach. This is the model hand: an engine, an early body, a +2000 counter and a top end that's already found.
- My Era...Begins!!, Doc Q, Van Augur, Jesus Burgess, Zehahahahaha!. It's light on top end, but My Era...Begins!! and the early pressure carry it. The extra cards it trashes also start growing Jesus Burgess.
- Two 1-costs, Sanjuan.Wolf, Borsalino, Boa Hancock. You have a clean curve with defense. Borsalino is a Blocker body you hold until its Life clause turns on.
Hands You Send Back
- All top end. Any mix of Shiryu, Boa Hancock, the Teaches and Zehahahahaha! with no 1-cost and no search. You'll pass several turns while holding cards that can't counter.
- No search and no 4-cost. Three 1-cost Characters with two 8+ cards leave a gap in the middle of your curve. Nothing in the hand closes it.
- Two copies of Zehahahahaha! with no Character Marshall.D.Teach. The Event needs 10 DON!! on your field and a Teach in hand. Until then it's only redirect fuel.
The redraw is all or nothing: you're locked into the second five. Life is set after mulligans, so a top-heavy hand you ship isn't lost value. Those cards return to the deck, and your many Trigger cards can surface from Life later.
Going First
You get 1 DON!! on turn 1, then 3, 5, 7, 9 and 10 on turn 6.
- Turn 1: Fullalead is the priority. Its activation costs a card from hand and resting the Stage, with no DON!! required, so it digs every turn afterward. Feed it a redundant top-end card or a 1-cost you can recover later with Catarina Devon's [Trigger] or Black Vortex.
- Turn 2 (3 DON!!): play a 1-cost Character plus My Era...Begins!!, or two 1-costs. Board a 1-cost early. It's a redirect target on the opponent's turn, and an attack sent into Doc Q, Vasco Shot or Van Augur becomes a card drawn plus their [On K.O.].
- Turn 3 (5 DON!!): play a 4-cost plus a 1-cost.
- Turn 4 onward: play Shiryu at 7, the 8-cost Teach or Boa Hancock at 9, and the 10-cost Teach or Zehahahahaha! on turn 6.
Going first, keep tighter. One extra empty turn on a 1-DON!! start hurts more.
Going Second
You get 2 DON!! on turn 1, then 4, 6, 8 and 10 on turn 5. That's one turn earlier for your biggest plays.
- Turn 1: play Fullalead plus a 1-cost Character, or two 1-cost Characters if you have no Stage.
- Turn 2 (4 DON!!): play a 4-cost. Jesus Burgess is the best pick if you expect removal, because your opponent's effects can't K.O. it.
- Turn 3 (6 DON!!): play Shiryu, ideally with a Blackbeard Pirates card already in the trash to put face-up into Life.
- Turn 5: play Zehahahahaha! into Teach, or hard-cast the 10-cost.
Going second, you can keep one more top-end card than you would going first. You're also taking the first hits, though, so weigh counters and redirect fuel more heavily than tempo.
Matchup Adjustments
- Aggro and go-wide. Keep for defense first. You want Doc Q and Catarina Devon for +2000, plus a cheap Character on board to absorb redirected attacks. Doc Q's [On K.O.] sweeps up to two cost-1-or-less Characters, and Vasco Shot rests a cost-6-or-less attacker. That makes 1-costs your best keeps here. A hand with no top end is fine.
- Removal-heavy midrange and control. Value Jesus Burgess highly. Your Leader also gives your Characters +1 cost on the opponent's turn, so their cost-based removal hits one fewer of your Characters than its number suggests. Keep the curve, and don't overload your opening on 1-costs that can be swept anyway.
- Slow, big-board decks. Keep greedier. A hand with Fullalead or My Era...Begins!! plus a Teach or Zehahahahaha! is a keep even with a thin early curve. The game will reach 10 DON!!, and the 10-cost Teach's negation and attack lock are what break those boards.
Sequencing & Key Lines
Turns 1-2: Plant the Engine, Seed the Board
Going first, your single DON!! usually goes into Fullalead. Activate it right away by trashing your least useful card, ideally a non-Trigger card such as a spare Jesus Burgess or Borsalino, so your Triggers stay in hand as redirect fodder. Your second turn is 3 DON!!. Spend it on two 1-cost Characters plus a Fullalead activation, or one 1-drop plus My Era...Begins!!.
Going second, 2 DON!! lets you do Fullalead plus a 1-drop on turn 1. That gets a Blackbeard body onto the board before the opponent's first real attack, and the Leader's redirect is only as good as the Characters you have to send attacks into.
Which 1-drop to lead with depends on what the opponent is doing:
- Vasco Shot is the default. When it is K.O.'d on their turn, you draw and rest one of their cost-6-or-less Characters. That usually removes their next attacker for the turn.
- Doc Q comes first against boards full of cheap Characters, where K.O.-ing up to two cost-1-or-less Characters matters.
- Van Augur only cashes in its On K.O. on the opponent's turn. Never trade it away on your own turn.
Turns 3-4: Bodies, Trash, and Life Setup
At 5-6 DON!!, add a 4-cost next to a fresh 1-drop.
- Jesus Burgess is your stickiest body. It can't be K.O.'d by opponent's effects and grows with your trash, so feed the trash first with My Era...Begins!! and Fullalead before you commit it.
- Catarina Devon is your attacker into a big board. Choose their highest-power Character when it swings, then attach DON!! on top of the copied base power.
- Sanjuan.Wolf is a defensive body. Its On K.O. sets your Leader's base power to 7000 for the rest of that turn.
Shiryu at 7-8 DON!! is the key setup play. Pick what goes face-up on top of your Life based on what you expect them to do next turn:
- Doc Q punishes a wide swarm of cheap Characters.
- Catarina Devon draws a card and rebuys a 1-drop from your trash.
- Black Vortex negates their Leader or a Character mid-turn.
- Another Shiryu draws you two cards.
Because the card is face-up, the opponent sees it. Either they hit into it, or they spend attacks elsewhere and your Life lasts longer.
Turn 5+: The Top End
Boa Hancock and Marshall.D.Teach (OP16-119) both add to your Life.
- Marshall.D.Teach (OP16-119) lets you choose the card from the top three. Always take a Trigger.
- Both Boa Hancock and Zehahahahaha! say "up to 1" on taking the opponent's Life. Skip it when the extra card in their hand is worth more to them than the lost Life, for example a Counter that saves their key Character. Take it when you are setting up lethal or need to strip a face-down Trigger.
At 10 DON!!, Zehahahahaha! into Marshall.D.Teach (OP09-093) is your strongest turn:
- Cast Zehahahahaha! for 8 and play Marshall.D.Teach (OP09-093) from your hand.
- Activate it during the same Main Phase, before any attacks. This negates their Leader for the turn and locks the Character you most need off the board out of attacking through their next turn.
- Spend the remaining 2 DON!! on Black Vortex to recover a Trigger, or attach them to a lethal attacker.
If you hard-cast Marshall.D.Teach (OP09-093) instead, it costs all 10 DON!!. That is correct only when you have no Zehahahahaha! in hand.
The Defensive Turn: Redirect Lines
Before you pass the turn, check two things: you hold at least one Trigger card to trash, and you have a Blackbeard Character you are happy to lose. The redirect is once per turn, so pick the attack carefully:
- Redirect their first attack into Vasco Shot. It dies, you draw, and you rest their next active attacker. You have effectively absorbed two attacks for one card.
- Redirect into Doc Q when they have cost-1-or-less Characters waiting to swing. It has 0 power, so it is always K.O.'d.
- Redirect into Sanjuan.Wolf when the turn's damage is aimed at your Leader. This only works if the attacker has at least 5000 power, so check before you trash fodder.
- Redirect to your Leader when they swing at your Shiryu or a Marshall.D.Teach you need next turn.
- Never Counter a redirected 1-drop. The K.O. is the point.
For trash fodder, prefer cards Black Vortex can bring back: spare 1-drops and duplicate Events. Every card you trash also grows Jesus Burgess and gives Shiryu more targets.
Branch Points
- Borsalino at 3+ Life: hold it. Its Life gain needs 2 or less Life. Play it early only if you need the 6000 Blocker immediately.
- You'll Frighten Me... ♡: it only works at 2 or less Life, so it is a late-game card. Save it for the turn their biggest active attacker is your lethal threat.
- My Era...Begins!! vs. Fullalead: use My Era...Begins!! when you want the trash filled. Use Fullalead when you want to keep cards out of the trash and put the misses on the bottom.
Playing Around Removal
The interaction you will meet most is removal on the opponent's turn followed by a wide attack step. Your Leader adds +1 cost to all your Characters during their turn, so your 1-drops sit at 2 and your 4-costs at 5. Account for that when you judge whether a cost-threshold removal effect can hit them.
Your On K.O. Characters still trigger when an opponent's effect K.O.'s them. Removal that rests, returns, or trashes them gets nothing from them, so spread your value across several bodies instead of relying on one. Jesus Burgess is the body to commit when you expect effect K.O.s.
Matchup Matrix
These verdicts come from what this list's card text does against each kind of game plan. The only result on record is the ChinoizeCup #127 win itself, so no matchup below is backed by head-to-head data. The named rows are the most-played Leaders in the online field just before the event.
| Opponent | Verdict | What decides it |
|---|---|---|
| Rocks.D.Xebec (OP17-039) | Even | Whether your Life refills keep pace with their fixed core |
| Luffy & Ace (ST30-001) | Even | Banking a Trigger card for the redirect every turn |
| Monkey.D.Luffy (OP17-079) | Even | Landing the cost-10 Teach turn before you run out of Life |
| Kalgara (OP08-098) | Even | Reading an unfamiliar list while you run the default plan |
| Sabo (OP13-004) | Even | Turning their K.O.s into your draws |
| Steady aggro | Favored | Your Life outlasts their curve |
| Cost-based removal control | Favored | The Leader's +1 cost and Jesus Burgess |
| Single-turn burst | Unfavored | You have one redirect and few defensive bodies |
Rocks.D.Xebec (OP17-039): Even
This is the Leader you will face most. It held 8 of 32 Top 8 slots across 46 of 256 entries (source: Limitless TCG online standings, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-19). All eight of those Top 8 lists ran the same eight cards at four copies (source: Limitless TCG online standings, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-19). Their deck is predictable, so track which of those cards you have seen.
Your plan is to refill Life without overcommitting:
- Keep Borsalino in hand until you are at 2 or fewer Life. That is when its On Play actually adds a card.
- Use the cost-8 Marshall.D.Teach to pick a Trigger card off the top three and put it into Life.
- Close with Zehahahahaha! into the cost-10 Marshall.D.Teach. That negates their Leader for your turn and stops one Character from attacking through their next turn.
Luffy & Ace (ST30-001): Even
All six Top 8 lists shared seven four-copy cards, and the Leader took 6 Top 8 slots from 31 entries (source: Limitless TCG online standings, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-19). As with Xebec, you can count their core.
- Never end your turn without a Trigger card in hand. The Leader's redirect is your main defense, and an empty hand switches it off.
- Redirect lethal Leader attacks into Vasco Shot to draw and rest a cost-6-or-less Character.
- Redirect into Sanjuan.Wolf to draw and set your Leader's base power to 7000 for the rest of their turn.
- Use Black Vortex to return a spent Trigger card from your trash and reload the redirect.
For that side of the matchup, see our Luffy & Ace Standard guide.
Monkey.D.Luffy (OP17-079): Even
This Leader took 3 Top 8 slots and 1 win from 29 entries (source: Limitless TCG online standings, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-19).
- Treat this as a race to 10 DON!!. My Era...Begins!! and Fullalead should be digging for a Marshall.D.Teach to pair with Zehahahahaha!.
- The milling from those cards also fills your trash, which grows Jesus Burgess.
- Save You'll Frighten Me... ♡ for the turn you drop to 2 Life. Stopping one active Character from attacking at that point usually buys the turn you need.
For that side of the matchup, see our Monkey.D.Luffy Standard guide.
Kalgara (OP08-098): Even
Kalgara is a small share of the field but a real threat: 9 entries, 3 Top 8 slots and 1 win (source: Limitless TCG online standings, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-19). You will likely have the least practice against it.
- Don't improvise. Run the default plan: develop cost-1 Characters as redirect targets, refill Life, and finish with the Teach turn.
- When the cost-10 Marshall.D.Teach negates a Character, pick the one whose effect has hurt you most so far.
For that side of the matchup, see our Kalgara Standard guide.
Sabo (OP13-004): Even
Sabo took 2 Top 8 slots from 18 entries (source: Limitless TCG online standings, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-19).
- Your cost-1 Characters gain value when they die. Doc Q draws and clears up to two cost-1-or-less Characters. Van Augur only fires during their turn, so let them take those trades.
- Keep Shiryu for the mid-game. Trash a spare card to put Doc Q or Vasco Shot back into Life face-up, so the next hit fires its Trigger.
For that side of the matchup, see our Sabo Standard guide.
Steady aggro: Favored
Decks that apply pressure one attack at a time run into your full defensive kit. You start at 4 Life, redirect once per turn, block with Borsalino, and refill Life with Borsalino, the cost-8 Teach, Shiryu and Boa Hancock. Each hit they land also risks flipping a Trigger. Spend your early turns on board and counters, not Life gain, because Borsalino does nothing above 2 Life.
Cost-based removal control: Favored
During their turn, the Leader gives all your Characters +1 cost. That pushes your cost-1s and cost-4s just out of reach of cost thresholds tuned for them. Jesus Burgess can't be K.O.'d by their effects at all. Two habits matter here:
- Lead with Jesus Burgess early.
- Trash freely with My Era...Begins!! and Fullalead, since a bigger trash makes him a bigger threat.
Single-turn burst: Unfavored
A deck that swings many times in one turn overwhelms a single redirect and one Blocker. Shiryu, Boa Hancock and every Marshall.D.Teach carry no Counter value, so your hand defends poorly. Keep your 2000-Counter cards (Doc Q, Catarina Devon) instead of playing them out early. Rebuild Life before their big turn, not after. Use Vasco Shot's rest effect on your own turn to shrink their attacker count.
Tech Choices & Variations
Most of this 50 is locked. A handful of slots carry the tuning, and every change runs through one constraint: your Leader's redirect costs a card with a [Trigger] from hand. Every slot you change raises or lowers how often you can pay that cost on your opponent's turn.
The Locked Core
Leave these alone. The 4 Doc Q, 4 Vasco Shot, 4 Catarina Devon, 4 Shiryu, 4 My Era...Begins!!, 4 Fullalead and the 4 cost-8 Marshall.D.Teach are the engine. The cost-1s are redirect targets that refund a card when K.O.'d. Catarina Devon's [Trigger] rebuys them from trash. Shiryu stacks Blackbeard cards back onto Life. The searchers find all of it. Cutting any of these breaks a loop rather than trimming a luxury.
The Flex Slots
| Slot | Count | Job | Raise when | Trim when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Van Augur | 2 | Cheap redirect target. Draws a card and makes a 3000-power change to an opposing Leader or Character, but only on the opponent's turn | You face many attacks per turn | Games are slow and few attacks come in |
| Sanjuan.Wolf | 2 | Mid-curve body. On K.O., draws and sets a base power to 7000 | You need a 4-drop that replaces itself | Curve feels clogged at 4 |
| Boa Hancock | 2 | Gains a Life and takes the opponent's top Life into their hand | Long games where a 9-drop resolves | Fast fields where 9 DON!! is too late |
| Zehahahahaha! | 2 | Free Teach at 10 DON!!. Its [Trigger] draws 2 and trashes 1 | Games reach 10 DON!! routinely | You rarely see turn 10 |
| Black Vortex | 1 | Gets a [Trigger] card back from trash | Grindy fields | Rarely; it is a single copy |
| You'll Frighten Me... ♡ | 1 | Counter that stops one active Character from attacking at 2 or less Life | Aggressive fields | Slow fields where you are rarely at 2 Life |
| Borsalino | 4 | Blocker and Life refill | Rarely; it is already at 4 | You need more [Trigger] density |
Swaps Worth Testing
- -1 Zehahahahaha!, +1 Van Augur: This lowers your top end and adds an early redirect target that still has a [Trigger]. You give up a second shot at the free Teach plus Life-strip turn. Make this swap first if your games end before 10 DON!!.
- -1 Borsalino, +1 Black Vortex: Borsalino is your only Blocker outside the cost-10 Marshall.D.Teach. It has no [Trigger], so it can't pay the Leader cost. It isn't Blackbeard Pirates, so the Leader can't redirect to it, and My Era...Begins!! and Fullalead can't find it. A second Black Vortex turns your trash into redirect fuel instead. The cost is losing a Blocker and a Life refill at 2 Life. Avoid this swap if your field attacks hard early.
- +1 You'll Frighten Me... ♡ (from Sanjuan.Wolf): This works against aggressive decks that put you at 2 Life fast. It's dead above 2 Life, so don't run three.
- -1 Boa Hancock, +1 Sanjuan.Wolf: Boa Hancock isn't Blackbeard Pirates either. It can't be searched and isn't a redirect target. Trimming it smooths your draws but costs you a late-game way to take Life.
- Teach split: The cost-10 Marshall.D.Teach has no [Trigger]. The cost-8 version does, and it hits from Life as a negate plus K.O. If you want more [Trigger] density, cut a cost-10 copy, never a cost-8.
Check Your [Trigger] Count Before Any Swap
Sixteen cards in this list have no [Trigger]:
- 4 Jesus Burgess
- 4 Borsalino
- 4 cost-10 Marshall.D.Teach
- 4 Fullalead
Every other card can pay for the redirect and does something when it flips from Life. Any swap that adds a card without a [Trigger] weakens both your defense and your Life. Accept that only if the incoming card does something the deck can't do otherwise.
One legality note: Borsalino can't share a deck with I Re-Quasar Helllp!! (source: Bandai Banned/Restricted Card List, effective 2026-10-12). While you play Borsalino, that card isn't an option.
Tuning for Your Local Field
In the online data, Rocks.D.Xebec took 8 of 32 Top 8 slots and Luffy & Ace took 6 (source: Limitless TCG online platform, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-19). If your store looks like that, test the stock 50 against those two first before moving anything. Then sort the rest of your field by how it plays:
- Aggressive, many attacks per turn: Go up on Van Augur and You'll Frighten Me... ♡ and down on Zehahahahaha!. You want more cheap redirect targets and more Counters. Keep all 4 Borsalino.
- Wide boards of cheap Characters: The stock list already fits. Doc Q K.O.s up to two cost-1-or-less Characters each time it's K.O.'d. Don't cut it.
- Removal-heavy and grindy: Go up on Black Vortex and keep both Zehahahahaha!. Jesus Burgess can't be K.O.'d by opponent's effects and grows as your trash fills, so it holds its value here. On your opponent's turn, your Leader gives all your Characters +1 cost, which can push them out of range of cost-capped removal.
- Big single threats: Keep the full eight Teach. The cost-10 version negates a Leader and a Character on the turn it lands. The cost-8 [Trigger] answers anything at cost 5 or less. Catarina Devon copies the power of the biggest Character on board.
Budget Options
The full list runs about $259 at TCGplayer market prices. You can play a functional version for meaningfully less, but only if you protect the engine and economize around it. The rule for this deck: cut finishers and luxury top-end before you touch anything with a [Trigger]. Your Leader's redirect, your Catarina Devon recursion and your Black Vortex value all depend on Trigger density.
Where the Money Likely Sits
Prices move, so check current market before you buy. In a list like this the cost usually concentrates in three places:
- Four-copy high-cost Characters. Shiryu, both four-copy Marshall.D.Teach Characters (OP16-119 at cost 8 and OP09-093 at cost 10) and Borsalino are the likeliest big-ticket buys. You need full playsets of most of them.
- Premium printings. The Shiryu in this list is the Full Art version. Alternate arts and full arts carry a collector premium with no gameplay difference.
- The Leader. You need exactly one Marshall.D.Teach Leader (OP16-080), and there is no substitute for it.
Free Savings: Buy Base Printings
Your deck may hold up to 4 copies of any one card number (source: Bandai official play guide, accessed 2026-10-19). A parallel shares its card number with the base card and plays identically. If a standard printing of OP16-108 Shiryu is available to you, buy that instead of the Full Art. Do the same for every other card where you are paying for art. This costs you nothing in games and should always be your first move.
The Budget Build
If you still need to trim after choosing cheaper printings, these swaps stay inside the existing list. You don't learn new cards, and the core engine keeps working. The deck stays at 50.
| Cut | Add | What you give up |
|---|---|---|
| 2x Boa Hancock | 2x Sanjuan.Wolf | The late-game swing of adding to your Life while pulling the opponent's top Life card into their hand |
| 2x Marshall.D.Teach (OP09-093) | 2x Van Augur | Two copies of your Leader-and-Character negation turn and one of your two Blocker bodies |
Boa Hancock to Sanjuan.Wolf is the softest cut. Hancock is Kuja Pirates and Seven Warlords, not Blackbeard Pirates. That means My Era...Begins!! and Fullalead can never find her. Wolf is Blackbeard type, so your searchers can dig for him. He also has a [Trigger] you can pitch to your Leader's redirect. On K.O., he draws a card and sets a base power to 7000 for the turn. You lose Hancock's Trigger, which drops a Trigger Character from hand. The real cost is the cost-9 play that both rebuilds your Life and strips theirs. Expect closing turns against high-Life decks to take a turn longer.
OP09-093 Marshall.D.Teach to Van Augur costs more. The cost-10 Teach is your hard answer to Leader effects: on the turn it's played, it negates the opponent's Leader, negates a Character and stops that Character from attacking. Keep at least two copies so Zehahahahaha! still has a high-impact target. The extra Van Augur copies add cheap Trigger bodies that draw and shrink an attacker by 3000, but only when K.O.'d on your opponent's turn. Against decks that win through a Leader ability, this swap hurts most. Buy the Teach copies back first if those decks dominate your locals.
What Not to Cut
- The 1-cost Trigger Characters (Doc Q, Vasco Shot) and Catarina Devon. Catarina's Trigger replays a cost-1 Blackbeard Character from trash, so the package stops working if you thin it.
- My Era...Begins!! and Fullalead. They are your consistency, and they also fuel Jesus Burgess's trash scaling.
- Borsalino. It is your main Blocker outside OP09-093 Teach, and its Life refill at 2 or less Life is what lets this deck survive aggressive starts. If it's your biggest cost barrier, buy it before any other upgrade.
- The cost-8 Marshall.D.Teach (OP16-119). Its Trigger is negate-plus-K.O., and its On Play rebuilds Life. It is the backbone of your defensive posture.
Upgrade Path
- Start: the Leader, the full Trigger engine, all searchers, four Borsalino, four cost-8 Marshall.D.Teach, base-print Shiryu and two cost-10 Marshall.D.Teach. Fill the remaining slots with Sanjuan.Wolf and Van Augur per the table above.
- First buy: cost-10 Marshall.D.Teach copies three and four. Cut the extra Van Augur copies to make room. This restores your lockdown turn and does the most for the matchups the budget build struggles with.
- Second buy: two Boa Hancock. Cut the extra Sanjuan.Wolf copies. This gets you back to the stock list's top-end density and its Life-stripping finish.
- Last, optional: premium printings such as the Full Art Shiryu. These add zero win percentage, so treat them as a cosmetic upgrade.
The budget build plays the same game with a slightly weaker closing hand. Stop at step 1 if you're testing the archetype, and finish step 2 before you take it to a competitive event.
Common Mistakes
Most lost games with this list come from misusing the Leader, stacking Life badly, or bricking the top end. These are the errors to fix first.
1. Running Out of Redirect Fuel
The Leader's redirect costs one card with a [Trigger] from your hand. Four cards in this list have no [Trigger]: Jesus Burgess, Borsalino, Fullalead and the 10-cost Marshall.D.Teach. A hand made only of those means no redirect on your opponent's turn. The usual way you get there is by spending Trigger cards on other costs: pitching them to Shiryu's On Play or Fullalead's activation, or throwing them as Counters, until none are left for the Leader.
Fix: Before you pay any "trash 1 card from your hand" cost, count your Trigger cards. Pitch a non-Trigger card whenever you can. Spend your last Trigger card only if the redirect isn't needed this turn. Black Vortex's [Main] returns a Trigger card from your trash to your hand, so use it to reload when your hand runs dry.
2. Burning the Redirect on the First Swing
The redirect is Once Per Turn. If you use it on your opponent's first attack, their follow-up attacks connect freely. The second mistake is redirecting to protect yourself when you could redirect for value. Moving an attack onto Vasco Shot or Doc Q turns a hit on you into a draw plus an [On K.O.] effect. Vasco rests an opposing Character with a cost of 6 or less. Doc Q K.O.s up to two Characters with a cost of 1 or less.
Fix: Wait for the attack that actually matters, such as the swing that would take Life at a low count or the one aimed at a Character you need. Check the power before you redirect onto a small body: the attacker has to meet that Character's power for the K.O. to happen. Your targets must also be {Blackbeard Pirates} Characters. Borsalino and Boa Hancock are not, so the redirect can't move an attack onto them.
3. Careless Life Stacking
Four cards add to your Life: the 8-cost Marshall.D.Teach, Shiryu, Borsalino and Boa Hancock. Whatever you put there becomes your next Trigger, so a card without a [Trigger] is wasted in that slot. Shiryu adds its card face-up, which tells your opponent exactly what will flip when they hit you.
Fix: With the 8-cost Teach, take a card whose Trigger helps you at your current board state. With Shiryu, pick a face-up card your opponent can't easily play around. Doc Q is a weak pick if they simply avoid having low-cost Characters out. A Catarina Devon that brings back a cost-1 body is a stronger one. Also track your Life thresholds. Borsalino's On Play and You'll Frighten Me... ♡ only work at 2 or less Life. Playing Borsalino at higher Life for the Blocker alone is sometimes correct, but make that choice on purpose.
4. Bricking the Top End
Zehahahahaha! requires 10 DON!! on your field. Its main payoff is playing a Marshall.D.Teach from your hand, so casting it without a Teach leaves you with only its Life-to-hand effect. The 10-cost Teach also has a timing rule: its [Activate: Main] only works on the turn it was played. If you play it and pass without activating, you have a 12000 Blocker and no lock.
Fix: Keep a Teach in hand before you reach 10 DON!!. When the 10-cost Teach lands, activate it before you attack. It negates the opposing Leader's effect, negates one Character, and stops that Character from attacking until the end of your opponent's next turn. Pick the Character whose attack or effect hurts you most.
5. Mismanaging the Trash
Several cards in this list care about what is in your trash. Jesus Burgess gains +1000 power for every 4 cards there. Shiryu pulls a Blackbeard card from it into your Life. Catarina Devon's Trigger plays a cost-1 Blackbeard Character from it. Black Vortex recovers a Trigger card from it. My Era...Begins!! fills the trash. Fullalead sends its unchosen cards to the bottom of the deck instead.
Fix: Play My Era...Begins!! early when you want to build up the trash. Before you flip your Life, make sure at least one of Doc Q, Vasco Shot or Van Augur is in the trash so a Catarina Devon Trigger has a target. Count the trash before attacking with Burgess, because a single extra card can push it to the next 1000.
6. Shrinking Catarina Devon
Catarina Devon's [When Attacking] effect sets her base power to the selected Character's power. If you select something weaker than her 3000, she gets smaller.
Fix: The effect says "up to 1," so select nothing when your opponent has no Character above 3000. Choose their biggest Character when you need her to fight up.
7. Misreading Van Augur and Doc Q
Van Augur's [On K.O.] effect only works during your opponent's turn. Doc Q's removal only hits Characters with a cost of 1 or less, and both cards need a {Blackbeard Pirates} Leader.
Fix: Treat both as defensive bodies that pay off through the redirect. Don't spend Doc Q as a +2000 Counter when the opponent has two cost-1 Characters out. In that spot, getting it K.O.'d through a redirect is worth far more than the Counter.
Tournament Prep & Final Notes
What to Practice Before the Event
- Redirect decisions at speed. The Leader's redirect is the most frequent decision this deck makes, and it comes on your opponent's turn while they are waiting. Drill the three questions until the answer is automatic: Do I have a [Trigger] card I can spare? Is there a Blackbeard Pirates target whose K.O. pays me (Doc Q, Vasco Shot, Van Augur, Sanjuan.Wolf)? Or should the hit land on the Leader instead of a Character you need?
- Life stacking. The 8-cost Marshall.D.Teach lets you choose which of three cards goes to the top of your Life. Practice picking for the next likely hit. Take the negate-and-K.O. Trigger on the 8-cost Marshall.D.Teach when you need board control. Take Catarina Devon when your trash holds a cost-1 Blackbeard to revive.
- Counting trash for Jesus Burgess. He gains +1000 for every 4 cards in your trash. Every redirect, every My Era...Begins!! miss and every Fullalead activation feeds him. Track the count out loud so you know his attack value before you commit DON!!.
- The top of the field. Spend your reps on the Leaders that took the most Top 8 slots. Rocks.D.Xebec took 8 of 32 Top 8 slots and Luffy & Ace took 6 of 32 (source: Limitless TCG online platform, 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-19). Use the Luffy & Ace Standard guide to build a faithful practice opponent.
Rules Interactions to Know Cold
- The +1 cost is opponent's turn only. During their turn, every Character you control is one cost higher. Effects that check cost see Doc Q and Vasco Shot as cost 2 and Borsalino as cost 6. On your own turn your Characters are back to printed cost, so plan your exposure around that.
- Redirect targets are type-locked. You can only send an attack to your Leader or a Blackbeard Pirates Character. Borsalino (Navy) and Boa Hancock (Kuja Pirates) are not legal redirect targets.
- Not everything is redirect fuel. The redirect needs a card with [Trigger]. These cards have none: Jesus Burgess, Borsalino, the 10-cost Marshall.D.Teach and Fullalead. Holding those does not keep the redirect live.
- Black Vortex recovers redirect fuel. Its [Main] returns a [Trigger] card from your trash, excluding itself. That card can be one you trashed to redirect, so one redirect can cost you only tempo, not the card.
- Van Augur only pays on their turn. Its [On K.O.] is conditioned on [Opponent's Turn]. A K.O. on your own turn draws nothing.
- The 10-cost Marshall.D.Teach must activate the turn it lands. Its negate requires that it was played this turn. Playing it through Zehahahahaha! counts. That line needs 10 DON!! on your field and also takes the opponent's top Life card into their hand.
- Life gain has conditions. Borsalino adds Life only at 2 or fewer Life cards. You'll Frighten Me... ♡ works only at 2 or fewer Life cards and only stops an active Character. Shiryu adds face-up, so your opponent knows that Life card. Boa Hancock hands your opponent a card from their Life, so treat her as a trade, not free value.
- Catarina Devon's Trigger revives from the trash. It plays a cost-1 Blackbeard Pirates Character from your trash. Know which of Doc Q, Vasco Shot and Van Augur are already there before you stack her into Life.
Pace and Time Management
This deck is slow by design. You look at three cards often, order cards to the bottom, resolve Triggers and redirect on every relevant attack. Losing a round to time when you were ahead on Life is the most avoidable loss this list has. Keep three habits:
- Pre-plan your bottom order. When My Era...Begins!!, Fullalead or the 8-cost Marshall.D.Teach reveals cards, decide your bottom order in the same breath you make your pick. Do not do it as a second step.
- Announce redirect intent early. Decide before your opponent's turn which [Trigger] card in hand is your designated discard. When the attack comes, you act instead of deliberating.
- Close out faster than feels natural. Once Jesus Burgess is large and your Life is restocked, start swinging. Holding back for perfect safety is how long games become draws.
Tuning Note
Watch the banned pair if you consider changes. The official list effective 2026-10-12 bars I Re-Quasar Helllp!! (OP07-115) from any deck that also runs Borsalino (EB04-058) (source: Bandai official Banned/Restricted Card List, effective 2026-10-12).
Final Assessment
This list won a 64-player ChinoizeCup on 2026-10-26, and the card text explains why it can grind. Almost every card carries a [Trigger], which does two jobs. It makes Life damage dangerous for your opponent, and it gives your Leader a nearly constant redirect. The cheap Blackbeard Characters turn redirected attacks into draws and removal. Meanwhile, Shiryu, the 8-cost Marshall.D.Teach, Borsalino and Boa Hancock keep refilling the Life total your opponent is trying to empty. The weaknesses are real and specific:
- Borsalino and Boa Hancock can't be redirect targets.
- Zehahahahaha! does nothing before 10 DON!!.
- Your whole defense depends on keeping a [Trigger] card in hand.
At about $259, this deck rewards players who are patient, count carefully and can make fast decisions on the opponent's turn. If that describes you, it is a strong pick. If you prefer to end games on your own terms early, choose something else.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the Marshall.D.Teach Black/Yellow deck win games?
It is a reactive Life-control deck that makes every attack cost the opponent something. It redirects attacks into cheap On K.O. bodies, refills Life with Triggers it chose, then finishes at 10 DON!! with Zehahahahaha! into the 10-cost Marshall.D.Teach to strip Life and lock down an attacker.
How does the Leader's redirect work and where should I send attacks?
Once per turn on the opponent's turn, trash a card with a Trigger from hand to move an attack to your Leader or a Blackbeard Pirates Character. The default target is a 1-cost On K.O. body like Vasco Shot or Doc Q, which draws a card plus its effect. Redirect to the Leader to protect a key Character like Shiryu.
What are the key cards in this Teach list?
The cost-1 package of Doc Q, Vasco Shot and Van Augur turns redirected attacks into draws and disruption. Shiryu, Borsalino, Boa Hancock and the 8-cost Marshall.D.Teach refill Life, while Jesus Burgess grows with the trash and the 10-cost Marshall.D.Teach closes games.
What matchups are hardest for Marshall.D.Teach?
Single-turn burst decks are rated Unfavored, because many attacks in one turn overwhelm a single redirect and one Blocker. Keep Doc Q and Catarina Devon as Counters, and rebuild Life before their big turn rather than after.
Which matchups is this deck favored in?
The guide rates steady aggro as Favored, because your Life outlasts their curve. Cost-based removal control is also Favored, thanks to the Leader's +1 cost on the opponent's turn and Jesus Burgess being immune to K.O. by opponent's effects.
What are the budget swaps for this deck?
First, buy base printings instead of premium art like the Full Art Shiryu. Then you can cut 2 Boa Hancock for 2 Sanjuan.Wolf, and 2 of the 10-cost Marshall.D.Teach for 2 Van Augur. Never cut the Trigger engine, the searchers, Borsalino or the 8-cost Marshall.D.Teach.
What are the most common mistakes when piloting this deck?
Running out of Trigger cards for the redirect, burning the redirect on the first swing, and stacking Life carelessly. Other common errors are casting Zehahahahaha! without a Teach in hand and forgetting to activate the 10-cost Marshall.D.Teach the turn it lands.
What should I practice before taking this deck to a tournament?
Practice making redirect decisions at speed, stacking Life for the next likely hit, and counting your trash for Jesus Burgess. Spend reps against Rocks.D.Xebec and Luffy & Ace, and pre-plan bottom orders to avoid losing rounds to time.
